What a sign board. If I saw this sign, I would surely not eat there. Looks like a place where the food is not as good as shown on the sign.

Interesting composition.

Looks delicious to me. On that note, is it time to put in the Xmas orders at KFC yet?

At least you can place your order right away. Ought to make it somewhat faster.

Fukui specialty? I did not know that.

This scene must be a change of pace for you gaijin who never set foot on Japan and had only a few things to say along the lines of, "Oh! Californian roll!" or "Whoa! Teppanyaaakeeee"

Alot easier for the drunks to read !!!!

I'll have a BIKURI Don...hold the surprises.

Disillusioned -- absolutely. Like every business in Japan they feel they must show everything they offer. That way there is no risk that someone might not see what they want. Simply too overwhelming to even begin to try to contemplate.

I'll have a BIKURI Don...

And it's free to anyone who can wolf it down in under 15 mins! Gross!!

Another case of 'grow-up Japan'. This is a menu for dummies. Are people so stupid as to need such huge pictures to help them choose. Obviously yes.

Menu too big, and I hazard a guess that the lights are too bright, the music too loud... altogether an unpleasant experience - apart from the food.

I'll have that, and that, and that, and that,...

Always be suspicious of a restaurant that tries to offer too many dishes. They can't possibly make all them skillfully.

This shop is in Ueno

That must take some time to put up....lots of combinations too but I can't see my favorite uni-don only set. Keep it simple!

Ooops...I take that back...just spotted it.

Where is the Door?, he is thinking how to get inside....

champon: That's a bit harsh, considering I get so many complaints from some of friends visiting Japan about not being able to understand the kanji written on menus in some of the restaurants, and thus not being able to order what they really want. They always demand that shops have colored pictures of the food. Pictures will help many of those people who are too lazy (and believe me, there are many out there), or just can't be bothered to study Japanese.

Yes, coming from a Westerner. Smirk.

I see lip smacking goodness. Damn, I'm overseas. The only decent Japanese food is a long walk away.

Cool pic! Part of the unique fun and adventure of eating out in Japan!

Great! I don't have to worry about not being able to read the menu when I forget to bring my reading glasses.

No choice at all. Even the wakame udon probably has katsuo dashi in it.

that is a fantastic menu board. Love it! Next time I'm in town I'm gonna find this place and eat there.

" at a shopping district in Tokyo"...why can't they just say where exactly?

Moderator: It is not a unique restaurant. There are restaurants with similar menu signboards all over the city.

This kind of huge placards are typical for donburi diners everywhere in urban Japan.

Hotbox08 -- how do you figure? If you look at the pictures, all the descriptions are in Japanese. So how do these pictures help you distinquish one variety of item from another, when many look the same? Can you tell which is chicken, or pork, or beef from these shots alone? I can't.

They actual have the same store in Little Tokyo in LA. The menu is really hard to read though but they do have photos like this. Prices are the same and even have the bikuri don challenge. The taste is decent and the only complaint I have is that they just need a little bit more seafood with the rice.

Herefornow: The cheap ones are deep-fried chicken or pork. The expensive ones are seafood.

Are the photograhps of the food ACTUAL SIZE??

If they are then those are very big portions for the prices listed. Some of them are twice the size of the guy's head.

But still, they are average to small portions for most large-sized Americans.

The nishin soba looks good, heh heh.

I hope the chap looking at what he might get for food is NOT looking at a typical "greasy spoon" fast food place that are so common in Canada.

I have a small kitchen, buy my groceries & cook up my own meals to my liking, to yes even my own tea or coffee.
