Sony strategy

Sony Corp's President and Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai speaks during a corporate strategy meeting at the company's headquarters in Tokyo on Thursday. Hirai said Sony is not thinking about selling or exiting the TV manufacturing business, where it has racked up annual losses for the past decade, although it would not rule out an equity tie-up. See story here.

Somwhat is their strategy, exactly? Do they know themselves? I suppose it's inevitable that the greats must fall, but Sony does not really seem to have any direction staked out. I think they should focus on the home entertainment section, lose the cell phones and cameras and simplify a bit more. Bet they could do well, then.

They are trying to get this Universe thing down. The problems are they haven't made the marketing moves or deals to attract US customers in mobile, are considered a little over priced in TV, and LOVE proprietary hardware. The good news is they are using hardware that is dedicated to it's function and not bloated in functionality, are using a lightly modified version of Android OS, and can get all their different machines to kind of work with each other. I would suggest a tie up with TV and PC (I know they left, but a focused effort would work) and some type of Sony Game/ Music subscription service for mobile a la Playstation Mobile Plus.

I love Sony TVs because they're the best and they make models with Blu-ray players built in. I'm terrified they'll stop making TVs altogether.

I love sony, but here is the thing, your bleeding money..the best thing you can do is cut your PC line away, sell it off, if you want to keep the tv for a few years to try to turn it around thats fine.

sadly the western world here in Canada and down south buys cheap crap, and doesn't bother with quality........

They already decided to do that a few months back.

If you didn't live in Japan you would be aware there are much better TV's available - Samsung and LG make the best TV's.

Oversaturated, falsely calibrated colors?? Yes, if you prefer inferior products go buy Samsungs or LGs.

Cost, cost ,cost too expensive, and as others have pointed out the same can be bought a lot cheeper. It's not the 80s any more other countries are producing products that are cheeper and if not better on parr with J products.

I used to love Sony. But with the last couple of products, proprietary issues and mind-baffling firmware drove me nuts. They lost me as a customer.

In North America, Sony is regarded as an entertainment company; while in the rest of the world it is regarded as a hardware/ product manufacturer... global branding problem, not helped by its silo mentality... A split is long overdue, especially as they do not share resources internally at all.

I'm sorry, comparing Sony/Panasonic to Samsung/LG is just as ridiculous as comparing a BMW to a Kia.

Sony TV used to be better than the others, but not anymore. I do not like a TV with Bluray player built in as I use a media player or external Bluray player that can play almost anything I throw at it.

I'm using an LG monitor as I type this. It's about 5 years old, going strong and I paid 16,000 yen for it. My previous one was a Mitsubishi, about 40,000 yen, and it self-destructed after 3 years.

So you're right, a comparison is ridiculous. It's blindingly obvious which side is making the right products and which side lost the plot about a decade ago.

ten years ago, yes, most definitely. Have another dip into the market it's very different. LG and Samsung are real innovators and now drive the TV industry with high quality

Citation please? what innovations? People bought Samsung and LG because they are cheap.

Blackrock, go to Google - search "TV reviews" - or "Sony vs Samsung TV's" - compare = realise that the world of TV tech has changed the last time you went shopping for one, and Japanese TV's are no longer considered the best. Some very good TV's but the centre of TV innovation (and most other electronics) is in Korea.

centre of TV innovation

Again, what innovations? I don't buy gimmicks

Sony was an incredible innovator in their day and continue to make high quality products, BUT they cannot touch Samsung for innovation today.

Samsung is the world’s second-largest recipient of U.S. patents. Samsung invented the fist smart TV in 2008 and continues to lead this field In fact, Samsung and LG are the leaders in smart home electronics (arguably the future of electronics industry) Samsung is often voted among the top 10 innovator in home electronics (including TV's) (admittedly Sony still gets ranked fairly high)

Korean electronics makers are no longer the jump-start imitators of the early 2000's - give credit where credit's due.

I beg to differ. Sony was, is, and will be the driving force of consumer electronics technology.

Ain't they having a law suit with Apple over patents? Admittedly, those patents are as ridiculous as those American officials granted those stupid patents.

Samsung and LG are the leaders in smart home electronics

Like? The first smart TV dated back to some time in early 80s, in Europe. And smart home is not something new. Better ask the Japanese- they are masters in the field.

give credit where credit's due

It's you who never gave up bashing Japanese products. I will say this again, selling more doesn't mean better. It's because of price, marketing and such.

As for me, my family is still using Japanese appliances that we bought 10 years ago or so. They are still working well, no reason to buy new ones.
