The first Japanese in space - Akiyama Toyohiro - has been almost airbrushed from history in the determination to make it Mohri Mamoru. His company - TBS - paid for him, a journalist to spend 6 days on Mir space station in December 1990, some 20 months before Mohri.

Taking into account the many different ways rich people could waste their money I think indirectly supporting scientific development for space travel is one of the less innocuous.

@virusrex--less innocuous means less harmless, but I infer your opinion is that him paying for space tourism is more innocuous than buying a megayacht or private plane.

Anyway, it is amazing that a dropout like Maezawa got to this point from his first business trading rare punk music CDs. Guess he found a way to profit from timely trends.
