These cars and trucks aren't buried, so they will be able to move on once the blockage up front somewhere is cleared. I hope it happens soon for them.

Expressway operators would do well to install "escape" doors along sections subject to heavy snowfall. Most expressways have an access road running along them. Sections of walls that are relatively easy to remove could allow emergency access off the expressway.

what are situations like this going to be like when everyone switches to EVs...batteries will run flat running the heater for a couple of hours, and you can't just get a jerry can and fill up the tank to charge the batteries up. unless there are charging points every few hundred meters along the highway everyone is going to be stranded even when the snow is cleared...

In Canada, motorists are told to put a sleeping bag, water and food in their cars when driving long distances in the snow.

The same for the northern US states, also. In fact, just keep it in the trunk all winter long. Sometimes these storms are much worse than predicted, or people simply get lost off the beaten path and run out of gas. At least they will have food and water until someone (hopefully) finds them.
