Actually most publications and TV stations do not use the word gaijin as they know it offends foreigners. 90% of the time when Japanese want to talk down to foreigners they use it... most not even knowingly they are talking down to foreigners.

silverstar, personally I have benefitted a great deal by not shaking hands. It is kind of odd at business meetings etc but the past couple of years I have not suffered from common cold and other seasonal infections. Particularly good if you are travelling to countries with low hygiene standards and overly populated countries. If at all, I shake hands, I try to wash my hands at the next possible opportunity or atleast use a wet tissue to wipe off. And I never touch the door knobs, stairway rails or toilet flush buttons. Use a tissue. I am not trying to be fussy but the cost of missing work or important appointments due to influenza and cold is rather significant.

spankychan, well ... yes ... technically they would ... but ..... you know?
To Japanese gaijin just means not Japanese..

Oh jeez, as a Canadian, I am embarrassed by that dress made from Tea Towels. It's worse that that ugly shirt what's-his-name was wearing. Oh short memories in J-politics!

Mr. And Mrs. Kan's smiles look very forced. They should be nice to the Canadians, there's is the only economy that isn't in the toilet.
spankmaster5000
shufu- wouldn't the Kans be the gaijins here?

The G8/G20 summit was a total waste of money. Nobuko's thinking what's the proper etiquette here.
SilverStar
Oh, I forgot to mention kissing, as some nations do.

womanforwomen--you're right about the spreading of microbes by handshakes. I remember an American radio host saying that you wouldn't have as many sick people around if the Asian practice of bowing replaced handshakes and, to an extent, hugging.

I think she's asking Kan for a dance.

Kan is sexist?
"ahhh thats cute she wants to shake hands..."
BurakuminDes
Is she refusing to shake hands? What an outrage - wars have been declared for less than this!

I like the background.

"that dress looks like a throwback to the Ukraine circa 1967."
Seems some of you guys are out to lunch on women's fashion. I don't like them but they are all over the place right now.
And I agree, Kan's wife looks like his mom.

Spidey
Do they even speak English?
Wifey on the right is saying "So Nobuko, wanna go for a beer and let the men talk business?"
Wifey on the left is thinking, "Not in this era you yellow haired, high heel wearing barbarian." (Translated of course.)

I try not to shake hands to avoid the passing of microbes. Bowing is the best form of greeting I think.
Why is Laureen Harper wearing those shoes?
Disillusioned
Gotta love that nice bright red power tie Mr. Harper is wearing. I feel intimidated just looking at the picture. It's a stunt he picked up from George Bush, I'm sure.
