This has always been one of my favorite shots of Japan. Mt. Fuji is beautiful. Too bad Shonan's waves aren't as majestic as the mountain backdrop.

Which part of Japan is this shot taken from.

Wow, what a cool shot. I love it!

spudman, They are pretty much all wearing boots too but unless you have an insulating layer of blubber the likes of Konishki you wouldn't last more than 5 minutes in there without a suit.

Hmmm? I see many surfers. I see Mt. Fuji. But, where are the waves?

Hey Spud! When was the last time you got in the water in Japan during winter without a wetty? It's 5/3mm season in Ibaraki with boots, gloves and a hood. Unless, you are like the typical Japanese guys that show up in their fully decked out vans with their 12' wrongboards and surf for ten minutes.

ChrisErlindson, This shot was taken from Fujisawa in Kanagawa Prefecture at a beach called Kugenuma. If you were to turn around you'd see Enoshima Island and just around the point is Kamakura where the Big Buddha is. This is about 45 minutes south of Yokohama.

That water is freezing.

Hey JT, how about a link to a wallpaper sized version of that pic?

I sometimes watch the surfers in the winter where I live on the days when the waves are large. The scenery is better in this pic! Surfing requires a great deal of talent and, like other sports requiring athletic prowess, it's a pleasure to watch.

Beautiful!

And what is with this winter so far. Its like we are in Spring already.

Speed, Thank you very much!! Actuary my brother in law come from Fujisawa, I can go next time.

nice shot but to the surfers: why bother?, my kids make bigger waves in the bath tub each night. Its one thing to get into the icey waters for great waves but to sit there in calm waters? hmmm.

I think I'm gonna cry or be sick, I'm not sure. BTW Betzee, who one the Billabong Pipeline Masters in Hawaii last week?

I live in Shonan and some people still go out when the sea is flatter than a boating lake. Better waves in Chiba but it gets big just before and after a typhoon if we're lucky.

I used to go with my J-wife to Shizunami South of Shizuoka-shi, Japan and I could never understand why so many Japanese surfers went there. The surf was exactly Shizunami (means quiet wave) and like surfing in Florida on a good day. Some folks want to be called surfers but the lame surf conditions and their lame lives don't equal surfing in the real sense. I liked the beach because it is flat and you can wade out a hundred feet (30 meters) and still be in knee deep water playing with your kids. Kawabunga dudes

disillusioned: I live in Hokkaido and surf from march to november. Yes I wear a suit but but from June to Sept no suit, no booties just a rash guard. I must be Konishiki like, my wife says I am. nikubuton rocks

Kuroshio or no-kuroshio, that's GOT to be cold!

Did you ever climb it, like I did? I admit, it looks majestic - from a distance!

Surfing isnt all about catching the biggest wave, it can be a naturally spiritual experience as well as physical. Shizunami gets big sometimes also. Kelly Slater won in Hawaii this year at pipe. Do you think Mt. Fuji cares?

Nice photo.

Yeah, I've climbed it. Got some great pics. This is a pretty cool photo. Very nice.

Forget the water. I see a beautiful photo of the most perfect dormant volcano in the world.

Correct me if i am wrong, mount fuji must be quite far away kugenuma, it has to be really tall to look that close to the beach.

I was out in that yesterday. Water felt fine in my 5 mm. Wore boots as I got a bone damaged once during a taifu session with my body board. You might find me in the picture.

But yesterday at Kugenuma the waves were six to 9 feet and it was tough getting out.

I also took pictures yesterday as it is my job actually. I just looked at my pictures from yesterday. This picture in this article was not taken yesterday. The snow is too far down the mountain already and the water is not rough enough. Beautiful picture though I must say.

The mountain is big, but with a zoom lens it appears bigger as it does in this picture. Thanks for posting it JT.
