Ah, the effortless joy of the Japanese male. Look at that bloke right in the middle. It was only the first day back after Golden Week and he's already putting on his performance of being exhausted. What a very hard worker he must be.

Big cities need more free and open spaces for the people, with plenty of greenery and shade for the summer.

Tokyo in particular is a heat island which can cause freaky weather patterns.

Nice peaceful photo with people relaxing and able to be themselves for a few minutes.

That was funny Ivan!

Not sure about others, but i never feel wide awake and happy to be at work on the Monday after a holiday. I'd much rather be in the park taking a nap!

How is a patch of gravel suddenly transformed into a park?

A better caption for the photo would be: "People rest on seats within a small gravel patch in Tokyo on Monday afternoon".

Obviously, the picture angle is not panoramic, but the lack of leafage is a sure bet the refreshed feeling sought for will not materialize.

The life of the Japanese salary man

Looks less like a crowded park than a crappy one. The usual dirt, no grass, and a couple of benches. Probably a lonely elephant shaped slide rotting away in the background or a single swing. At least the benches look somewhat kept up.

Anyway, I don't know why people are ripping so much on the 'performance' of the tired Japanese male. Some of these guys bust their asses off and STILL have to do the sabisu overtime without pay. I'm not saying there's NEVER exaggeration or mellow-drama, but we don't know what this guy's thinking, nor do we know why. I will say that I hate it when one guy sprawls out on a bench meant for two or more people. Places to sit here are limited enough.

I feel claustrophobic, looking at this crowded park...

Yet the people in the photo seem oblivious, of each others' existence...

. Yes, "performance" is quite accurate. I've never seen such drama as a Japanese male feeling tired. Feeling sleepy and taking a nap is one thing, but the pained-face contortions, collapsing into chairs, slumping forward etc. suggest they 1.havent slept since 2007 2. have just been told their entire family perished in a house fire, or 3. both.

Should they be staring at each other?

Whatever, Wakarimasen...

Agree. That's one crowded park.

Probably spent hours stuck on the freeway on the way home. And realizes that after a long hard day's work he'll get home and his wife will complain about how hard her day was listening to all the gossip of her friends at Gusto.

Maybe the person sleeping on the NBA bag is wearied by the Mav's getting swept!

Yet the people in the photo seem oblivious, of each others' existence?????????

Should they be staring at each other? I like the Japanese propensity to pass out at a moments notice.

It was only the first day back after Golden Week and he's already putting on his performance of being exhausted.

And you know for a fact that he had the full week off for Golden Week? You're sure he isn't in the hotel trade, or catering, or travel business, or a medical worker, or the retail trade - all jobs that are busier over Golden Week when everyone is off work. Or maybe he spent the time catering to his family's demands and is glad to get back to work for a rest?
