Taxi of tomorrow

The Nissan NV200 has been selected by New York City to supply its taxi fleet for the next 10 years. Nissan beat out Ford Motor Co and Karsan USA in a contest for the rights to anchor the fleet. The anchor of the city's current fleet of more than 13,200 taxis is Ford's Crown Victoria, which was recently discontinued. See story here.

'Seen outdated'? I'm not so sure if people love to write without any proper knowledge BUT 'Toyota Crown Confort' is designed like this with NEW engines and NEW specs. In fact, I love to see all taxis similar like HK's, Tokyo's or London's. It seems NY checked 'real' consumptions and not just information from the dealership or EPA. A lot of companies show impossible numbers to sell cars not taking care of customers. Several examples are even alarming, like hyundai in the US. But this is not a problem for NISSAN and that's why NISSAN was chosen. CONGRUTULATIONS NISSAN.

Thank you for buying American NY City!

Electrical Engines VS. V-8

I would go with the electrical engines. GM can't begin to compete. Nissan is number one

I hope NYC will buy a few Skyline GTR's I need a swift taxi now and then.

If I had to choose the next generation Taxi's for NY, the new Scion XB with base Camry engine is exceptionally reliable with decent gas milage. If they made hybrid version, then it would be more ideal. However, there are many options for Taxi's that carry only one to two people, a small turbo diesel is probably more ideal and cheaper to operate than many of the current hybrids. CAR: Ford Fiesta 1.4 diesel TDCi range: FUEL CONSUMPTION: (city) 53.3mpg / (hwy) 76.3mpg / (combined) 65.7mpg. However, the long term reliability might be a problem.

I was talking about US manufactured, not American companies. Ford had planned to build its vehicles overseas, while Nissan plans to build them in Mexico then put final touches on them at a New York City-area facility. I'm glad in that sense they lost.

No idea why our countries economy is in the toilet when people here support foreign companies more than our own, ugh.

I would have voted for the karsan. They look really futureistic and would fit into the ever changing city better.

@ Lizz - you need to understand that your average GM pickup, touted as an "American" vehicle, is assembled in Mexico with a majority of parts from places other than the USA. The Honda pickup is assembled in the USA and has a majority of parts from the USA. Both vehicles have to say so right on the dealer sticker. So while it would be nice to "buy American" it's not as simple as that.

The posts at the Courier Owner Driver Forum (UK) suggest that there are problems with the NV2000's automatic transmission and problems in general after 50km. The 1.5L diesel gets 50 to 53 mpg but the 1.6L petrol holds up better mechanically.

Big city taxi's can easily travel more than 100,000km in a year.

Good luck NYC.

Lizz

If he stipulated such an unreasonable cause as requiring the vehicles to be manufactured in the US then I'm pretty sure he couldn't have afforded them. Unfortunately.

Manufactured in Mexico ??? Made by underpaid, under-qualified workers in a third world country. Bloomberg simply doesn't care about American jobs. There should have been a stipulation that at least a majority percentage of the labor be performed in the U.S. as so many federal contracts have done.

devoid of personality at least the new ones in London retain some of the old flava

Serrano, maybe it can do all sorts of clever things, but it is really ugly.

Why is it that other than the odd ball Prius taxi that most taxi's in Tokyo seem outdated by like 10 - 20 years.

Because this is Japan! :) lol

Nice.. now it'll be great if the taxi's in Tokyo also got an uplift. Why is it that other than the odd ball Prius taxi that most taxi's in Tokyo seem outdated by like 10 - 20 years.

Pretty cool vehicle, especially the eventual zero-emissions capability. Kind of reminds me of that Mars Colony cab in Total Recall...

America needs taxis like that, lots of room for excess baggage. Good for Nissan.

NV200 was picked up because it has the technology to go electric. That's more important than design. I wonder why Ford couldn't come up with a hybrid or a EV.

nanda - What's not to like?

Sorry, but how could anyone like THAT?

It's a tourist mobile...

No frolic room...

Definitely New York, will look better with Nissan Cabs.

Pretty snazzy cabs. Was GM and Toyota never in the running for this contract?

Nice looking, practical, just wonder what it will look like after a couple of years on the street.

I still have an affinity towards Checker Cabs until they went with all vinyl coverings on the seats which were always so slippery, every hard corner felt like a crazy amusement ride at Disney.
