Fortunately, the trains I rode to work when I lived in Japan weren't always that full.

Trains every 2-3 minutes can't be improved.

When I did this, they were 8-10 minutes. Evenings around 9 p.m. to 10 can see the worst crushing, when waiting time can be up to 15 minutes.

This part of life in Japan I do not miss.

I've got a couple of days in Tokyo coming up. I'll be well too hungover to be anywhere near the trains in the morning rush hour so I will be fine!

Trains every 2-3 minutes can't be improved.

Trains are not universally crowded, most people will choose a carriage close to the most convenient exit/transfer point at the arriving station.

Double decker trains maybe but that require new stations.

The train operator should run more frequent services. That would reduce congestion considerably.

There are no older people in this photo, why not?

The hilarity ends when or if the train has to stop abruptly and Mr Hungry 110+ kilograms of obesity becomes a risk crush hazard to any person or child who inadvertently happens to be in the vicinity. That's the big deal.

It is great that even a big chap like him can still squeeze on the subway like everybody else. I know what it's like to be big in Japan (more vertically than horizontally in my case) but still...good on ya fella.

That used to be my life. I don't miss it!

I've always wondered why this is allowed and not considered dangerous

because, except for a tight, very uncomfortable, hot and sweaty squeeze, usually nobody dies, or gets injured because of this. Yes, even big, strongly built gaijin, like myself, don't enjoy the elbows, handbags, umbrellas, occasional heads in the stomach also...

Tubby is taking up two spaces. He should buy two tickets. The woman in the middle should get 50 percent off.

Hilarious photo!

I overheard Konishiki saying ''Damn!''

Train cancelled, Mr Hungry devoured the doors, question is are passengers entitled to a full refund?

Why such a situation is existing in Japan that has most advanced Railway system existing in the country.

Ah; body shaming at its finest. Isn't it wonderful there's always someone to look down on?

I am fortunate that my schedule which is offset from the morning and evening rush hours, allows me to always get a seat.

Glad Osaka is not like that.

Welcome to my every day... (the guy clutching the bag, not the one about to get his belly pinched by the doors)

Arterial lines from the inaka are hellish at the best of times, a struggle to breath when it there are delays. Anybody got suggestions for train lines that arent so bad in peak hours (heading into town)?

If the big guy got off they could fit three more people on!

Wonder what the lady standing sideways is thinking. Probably wondering if it could get any worse.

What a nightmare. This is why I live in the inner city so only need the subway which is rarely too crowded in the mornings. The above grounds are out of the question for me

That is plain nasty!

I remember the days when I did have to use the train to get to work. Fortunately I always went in the opposite direction. Very relaxing to be inside half empty trains, while watching this on the other side!

I've always wondered why this is allowed and not considered dangerous

I am so grateful that I never have to ride these days. Hellish.
