Who says Japanese people don't like to hug in public?

...peace loving people :(

I'd love to visit these kind of matsuri's like the Gion matsuri in Kyoto but the large crowd is just a huge turnoff.

Doesn't "scuffle" give the impression people are fighting? This picture is just showing how it was everywhere yesterday at Asakusa. It was crowded!! That's all. I would say "people jostle".

The gentleman with the tattoo is quite obviously yakuza.

sometimes competition can turn grown up men into childish sore-losers or plain savages, that's why I prefer team sports without much psychical contact (cycling, volleyball, ping-pong..)

So what's with the avatar?

Was there yesterday to carry the miya mikoshi. Quite the experience, let me tell you.

I ve had a stall at one of these before and some drunk yak started screaming LOAD at me that his beer was warm, from the other side of the counter. I kept my cool until he insulted my wife, as soon as i was the same side of the counter fronting him he withered up, pathetic.

"The gentleman with the tattoo is quite obviously yakuza." You don't say? Who would imagine that there would be, gosh shock...Yakuza at the Sanja Matsuri? I'm sure jostle is a better word choice than scuffle.

10k hot sweaty people all trying to cram into one small space, oh man i cant think of anything more exciting to do!?

The tatooed guy can´t get past the oobatarian -- no chance!

I dont care which country you come from, CULTURE makes people do some of the strangest things

1 ( +3 / -2 )

maybe culture is the effect and people are the cause one person culture is another person insanity

I was surprised. When I saw this pic without reading the headline, I thought there was a riot somewhere else in asia.

Not for the claustrophobic...

If you'd asked me where in the world I thought this photo was taken, I never would've said Japan.

These yaks always start fights in these situations. Get drunk, turn a fun event/competition into a pointless and childish show of 'manliness'.

I think this is quite silly.

@Thunderbird. Sorry, but that is wrong, I have seen plenty of grown men and women in those sports act like childish sore-losers or plain savages. Oh, let's not forget Lance Armstrong...... He sure acted like an idiot for many, many years as well and he is just one of many who did.

"The gentleman with the tattoo is quite obviously yakuza." What was your first clue? The Doraemon badge on his chest?

@wtfjapan or maybe culture is the effect and people are the cause.

Look at the guy in the top left of the pic, you can read what his thinking and it begins with a...

That woman in the photo is gonna bite the yak's nose off.

Seriously, you couldn't pay me enough (maybe) to attend a matsuri - same stuff, same food, same chanting, same crowds, over an over. If this is what gets them off, I feel sorry for them.

Simon B

so what does it have to do with anything? it's a picture from Mortal Kombat 2... but even if it was MMA fighter it would still be totally irrelevant to my comment because martial arts along with american football etc are contact sports. I'm talking about soccer, or any other sport that doesn`t necessarily need you to kick, punch, slap your adversary to get a minimum advantage in the game. btw I stopped watching that garbage because of the game being stopped every 10 seconds with somebody faking an injury (or stop crying and miraculously recovering in 2 secs after they see the referee didnt buy it). Back to the picture above, you can see people being squeezed while having fun (as it was supposed to be) but look at the guy in the center... he would rip your clothes off for a stupid marble ball..

Wuz there too for a couple hrs. The portable shrines bouncing up and down nearly every other street were amazing. Especially with Tokyo Skytree dominating Asakusa's background. Quite an experience indeed.

I just noticed Doraemon... wow. Also that Yak looks familiar. When I go to Japan I always go to Sensouji at least once and I'm sure I've seen him there. He wasn't the one who conned me out of Y10,000 though :(

As for the festival I love watching these, but I couldn't get into that crush... it would kill me.
