Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi is a sea of lights after the Christmas illumination ceremony on Thursday night. About 700,000 LEDs will illuminate the area from 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. through Dec 25. For more photos, visit JapanToday.Gallery

they really should run it through early January instead of ending it on Christmas day
smartacus
Jigg88 In Japan, it's customary for all Christmas decorations to be taken down by Dec 26, so New Year decorations can be put up. In fact, the Christmas season peaks on Dec 24 after a 2-month buildup. Nothing happens on Christmas Day itself.

Wow gorgeous

Interesting to see that they are now competing with the long running Roppongi Hills Illumination set-up. I saw both last night and there were helicopters everywhere, even a blimp was circling around.
SushiSake3
That's beautiful and a great shot.

That's very nice. Time to take my DSLR for a walkabout.
Altria
Looks like the same display as last year.

Great, more flickery LED christmas lights. Am I the only one who finds the rapid pulsing harsh on the eyes compared to the smooth glow of the old-fashioned kind?
Proffessor
It's the same every year, Altria. Nothing new.

As all the ads here say: "Happy Merry Christmas" everyone.

More wasted energy and pollution. There is nothing beautiful about destroying the planet! When will people realize that this leaves a carbon footprint. Yes, CO2 makes those pretty light shine. WAKE UP to the damage humans are doing to the earth!!!!!!!!!!! They are not pretty!! They are deadly!!!!!!!!!!
adm_kenshin
fatloser: LEDs are more energy-efficient than light bulbs, so the footprint is smaller than you think. Besides, the Japanese have deserved their christmas lights for taking the train instead of the car.

When you're right, you're right.

Good as this photo is, it doesn't do justice to this fantastic light display. Have to see it to believe it.

Dear fatloser - adm_kenshin is right. LED's are highly efficient at producing the spots of ligh you see. Compared to incandescent lights (which are very rare in Japan - and lose 98% of their energy in heat), they hardly register on the energy scale. 700,000 LEDs would of course have some impact on the environment, but it isn't as outragous as you might be suggesting.
