Actress Masami Nagasawa smiles after the light-up ceremony for the Tokyo Midtown illumination on Thursday night. With John Lennon's "So This Is Christmas" blaring in the background, Nagasawa, 22, used a spoon to turn on the display which consists of about 700,000 LED lights. The spoon is a reference to her new movie, the telekinetic comedy “Go Find a Psychic," which opens on Nov 21. The illumination will run through Dec 25.

wow that looks pretty cool, wish I could see it

It's only friggin November 13th. Can't the Japanese copy a festival properly? Xmas in Japan is such a crock!
pathat
Let's save electricity by using LED lights.
Let's put up displays using more lights and for a longer period of time because we're saving some electricity by using the LEDs.
Makes sense.
MarieInJapan
Why a spoon? :))
ratpack
Spudman I agree totally

Hey scrooge, it's Christmas season. Have you NOT been to the US recently? Christams crap is everywhere already. Either way, this is Japanese version of Christmas, I'm sure they neglected to read the rule book on Christmas, I'll ask them to consult you next time.
The amount of watts/amps that amount of LED's use is around the same as a handful of conventional filament bulbs. So yes, it does save a ton of electricty by comparison, even staying on longer.

societymike: Obviously I know that LEDs save lots of electricity. I have them throughout my home. What I'm trying to highlight is the notion that I saw first-hand in recent years in Japan that the use of them somehow makes it O.K. to use a lot more lights for days or often weeks longer for displays. Why not use even fewer lights and for a much briefer period to save one helluva lot of electricity? Is it really necessary for places like Tokyo Midtown to have a Christmas lights exhibition up for 1 1/2 months?

I wonder if Jesus will show up!?

Before the word 'kireeeeeei!" accidentally falls out of my mouth, let me say, "fake, gaudy, plastic, unChrismasy and pointless!" instead. I have yet to find one real Christmas tree tree (i.e. cut down in the forest) tastefully decorated anywhere in this country. If you're going to copy another culture's holiday, try to do it with a little authenticity and style. "Lost in Translation" here, I'm afraid. On the other hand, I don't expect good sushi in America.

Christmas lights, not illumination.
chewbakayaro
Bring back that crucified Santa that urban legend claims once graced the holiday decorations in Japan.

It's been quite a past few days for Masami. First the best legs award and now the illumination..

700,000 LED lights - Another waste of energy – lead to global warming.

Have to love J-girls style.
dbung10
Maybe it isnt a waste of energy in the long run. Many couples will have their first date here, be captivated by the beauty of the surroundings and fall in love. Shortly they will begin to co-habit, saving energy by sharing food and warmth with each other. In fact by dating at this place, you could well be saving the world.

The only good thing about this story is that it comes with a large size photo. JT, please make this a common practice to have decent sized photos with each of your articles.

Christmas lights shouldn't be blue.

I must be one of the few foreign readers who actually like these illuminations and the way Christmas is celebrated in Japan. It's fun and always makes me feel happy, no matter what sort of a day I have had at work.
But I get to have my spiritual dose of Christmas, too, by going to church in Roppongi and hearing the choirs sing carols on Christmas eve.
I've only missed two Christmases in Japan in the past 25 years. The only thing I don't like is how it all ends on Dec 25, or Dec 24, to be more precise, since very few Japanese do anything Christmassy on Dec 25.

Have to love J-Girls style...that sums up my feelings! Man...as Nagasawa-san demonstarets above...J-Girls ahev the best style and the figures to make the styles work! Gotta love Japan!!!
flatearther
I like blue Christmas lights, personally and since they're everywhere in the States I have no problem getting them back home. The wilder the decorations the better, I say! Isn't Christmas allowed to have a little whimsy and fun?
societymike
man, so many scrooges here, are you guys all depressed? How do you live with yourselves on a daily basis in japan? Why are you still here???
That is a very pretty area, display, illumination, etc. Christmas here is not much different than it is in the Western world. Commercialism, romance, lights, trees, decorations, and an all around "feel good" atmosphere. I think the only big thing "missing" from the J version is the silly religous crap. I for one prefer it this way.

Good looking woman AND dressed in a manner fitting with the cold weather of these & future days. My compliments on her choice of clothing to that photo.

The lights on the ground look like stars in the sky...it is just too beautiful to be true. I wanna take my pic taken there too.
Sarge
Masami here is the winner of the beautiful legs 20's category.
Jkanda
The decorations and the lady are all beautiful. I hope the sponsors would contribute to the happiness of the elderly of this land too.

Good to see that the producers of Go Find A Psychic and the Mitsui Midtown company have their anti-fur campaign in full swing...
meloveulongtime
I was waiting to see if some $%# was going to comment about the fur...must be a burden to bear of all supposed societal ills...I am happy I can just enjoy life guilt free!
northlondon
meloveu, it was a joke. Seems like someone else is a little bit too highly strung today.

I think they could find a rather more cheerful song than that ever so didactic tune by John Lennon. No, thanks, John! And it covers the New Year as well into the bargain. I think Christmas songs should cover, well . . . Christmas.
Jingle Bells is just all right with me.
Peace, man!

Best blue Christmas light-ist

Best Anti-Earth Day Event-ist.
wow how anti-Earth Day can Japan possibly get? With Copenhagen around the corner too.. Is this some kind of local contest or national? Must be a whole ministry devoted to figuring out ways to make Japan filled with more little blue LEDs so that it can miss more international agreements.
Congrats are in order.
BTW, blue, the Christmas colour!! Huh??
Look, is there a 1950s encyclopaedia sitting around somewhere with a whole lot of typos errors causing havoc? I don't get it.
Japan either wants to become more efficient and environmental, or it wants to wear a fur coat while smiling at all the blue LEDs.
Funny and sad
JA_Cruise
Her coat I believe is fake fur, so calm down everyone
gogogo
JA_Cruise: This is Japan, it's most certainly real, no one would be caught dead wearing fake.
societymike
Do you guys think this is some sort of Government directed initiative? This is basically an advertisement for the movie, sponsored by the producers/etc.
Mittsu
Roppongi Hills illuminations way better. Stupid to use a spoon, but refers to the Uri Geller asopects of her new flick. She isn't all that - ears way too big.
societymike
^^ the ears are a key feature! It's like handles.
Jkanda
This girl must be annoying the Ms. Earth Japan who was on the JT news , all naked and campaigning against waste etc.
Eyeblack
There are 3 more Christmases left. So why are you worried about fur and stuff? Just enjoy yourselves.
Miyaratmosphere
and what? all they can come up with is blue lights? is that the only color they have? again, LOL!
sillygirl
pretty pathetic tree.
aintgottimetobl
what is this whinge and whine corner??jolly up for goodness sake people...
Icantbelieveit
Is that a Charlie Brown tree?
Cherryblossomgirl
already Christmas tree on November ??? No pleaseeee !!!
Kwaabish
Cherryblossom,
Many portions of the US kicked into Christmas season right after Halloween. Many cities are in the midst of preparing their Christmas Trees also.

"( Masami's ) ears way too big"
Gosh, I'd hate to hear what you'd say about... never mind.

I like her boots, but it looks like she was pohotshopped into the picture.
