True Grit

I hope there will be a true grit japanese samurai version !!

usually westerns are based off samurai movies. I dont think there has ever been a samurai movie based off a western. I could be wrong. but none that are any good come to mind.

Some Kurosawa classics are based on Shakespere ( it's " western" but not " cowpoke western " )..........still, replaced the native americans with ninjas etc, could be interesting.

I often wonder how movie producers deal with 15,000 aspiring actresses when they announce these auditions. Do the girls (and their mothers) all show up at offices in various cities around the country? What then? Do the Coens hire someone in each location to check out all 15,000? Anyone in the industry know how the process works?

I would assume they go through various local talent agencies across the country to cut down the group.

For stuff like american idol, etc they hold massive audiences(over days) at various locations across the country.

sometimes they do it at the parking lot of Wal-mart.........seriously.

I will probably make the trip to a cinema to see this film. Probably the first of maybe 2-3 trips all year. Otherwise most films are released on iTunes before a Japanese cinema gets them. (This one isn't coming out until June so it is the rare case where Japan gets it first...)

Downloaded and watched this and I think it will be one of the best movies of 2011 for sure. I loved it, will watch again.

Wish the Japanese 14 year-old girls could see this picture and see how someone that age can dress in an attractive/fashionable way, and not like Julia Roberts in the initial scene of "Pretty Woman".

browny1.... that's quite correct. Western films took a lot from Kabuki theatre. That increasing tick-tick-tick sound in Westerns? Straight out of a kabuki theatre's clapping sticks. And some of those aspects found their way into samurai films, and in turn to westerns.

Great film and great acting. I didn't realise she was so young.

I just found out she is of African-American, Jewish, Filipino and White ancestry. Sure makes for a nice mix!

The original True Grit movie was based on the book of the same name by Charles Portis published in 1968. There wasn't a single samurai in the book. Though based on the book, the original movie deviated from the book in many places.

The new movie more closely follows the story in the book.

You go, girl! All genuine American pie. No makeup, a big smile and a good sitting posture showing her class.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "no makeup", but it certainly wasn't layered-on so much that she looks like an oil painting.

Really good film with a great dialogue. This girl is excellent in it - she steals the show.

Saborichan - you comments on the borrowing and exchanging(2 ways) of techniques, plots and ideas is common in all aspects of artistic endeavour. Music, Film, Art, Architecture, etc.....!

But that falls well short of supporting kujiranikusuki's assertion that, "Usually westerns are based off Samurai movies".
