I can only imagine he is a student with no job....yet. I have never camped out for a ticket or product in my life... there must be something wrong with me.

there must be something wrong with me.

Absolutely. You are not belonging to the group of people who must have the symbols of being cool! But then again, symbols are for the simple minded.

lets give him some credit. It's probably the first time he's been outdoors in 6 months.

I still can't udnertstand why anyone would buy an Apple product. They are utterly, utterly useless.

Take the iPod. A device with an unbelievable crap sound output, and crap quality from a download music store.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

chotto - LOLs what would the alternative be?

Answer: Android!! - well at least MY HTC Desire phone it's way over any iCrap... Hey Apple fans, how about watching a Flash page or playing a Flash game on the iPad?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why so hostile to apple products? They are well made and easy to use. Well suited for the average user. If you are not the average user than good for you, still no reason to sh!t on people who enjoy their products.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Obviously has tooo much time on his hands.....

LOLs what would the alternative be?

How about the Chinese made iPed. Have been on sale for a while. Looks exactly the same as the iPad, same functions, it works, but sells for less than 10.000 yen. Maybe somebody skimmed a load of these things from the factory where they make the Apple one and applied a different sticker.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I am sure this kid is getting a discount or kickback on the iPad because this is just good PR for Apple. Anyway, I always wait till the product has been out for a while, wait till they iron out any software bugs and price drop.

Apple make many amazing products - that some people say otherwise is peevish and simply untrue. They ain't perfect - that's true but anyone who says they prefer a Dell to a MacBook Pro needs their head examining. And without iPods, we'd still be stuck in the dark ages hauling around portable CD players. There is a kind of rank, sad desperation to sitting outside a store for 48 hours, though. Wonder who's paying for it? His mama probably. Perhaps part of it was getting his photo taken.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

jonswan-- there weren't mp3 players before iPod? I feel like I've been using them since forever. Granted they weren't very good and barely held more than maybe 5 songs at a time, but still, haha. We were getting there. iPod just ran with it.

As for the picture-- it's a little extreme to be camped out for that long, but goodness, he's 19, just a kid. This is the kind of thing that's kind of okay to do when you're young I guess, haha. And for all we know, he could be paying for it himself somehow. Lots of unanswered questions.

This reminds me of when the Wii was released in the U.S. and all those people were standing outside game stores in freezing cold weather...

For even wasting their time in comparing two shit products.

I can understand queuing for a show where a musician/band has a limited number of appearances, but queuing just because you want to be the first one to own something that there'll be but a glut of in a a few more days, and then will be outstripped by other gadget in less than a year's time - well, that's another matter entirely.

The Century of the Self is a British television documentary film that focuses its attention on Sigmund Freud's family,‭ ‬especially his daughter and nephew,‭ ‬who exerted a surprising amount of influence on the way corporations and governments throughout the‭ ‬20th century have thought about,‭ ‬and dealt with,‭ ‬people. [edit] Overview

"This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy." - Adam Curtis' introduction to the first episode. This section does not cite any references or sources.

Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (February 2010)

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, changed the perception of the human mind and its workings. His influence on the twentieth century is generally considered profound. The series describes the ways public relations and politicians have utilized Freud's theories during the last 100 years for the "engineering of consent".

Freud himself and his nephew Edward Bernays, who was the first to use psychological techniques in public relations, are discussed. Freud's daughter Anna Freud, a pioneer of child psychology, is mentioned in the second part, as is one of the main opponents of Freud's theories, Wilhelm Reich, in the third part.

Along these general themes, The Century of the Self asks deeper questions about the roots and methods of modern consumerism, representative democracy, commodification and its implications. It also questions the modern way we see ourselves, the attitudes to fashion and superficiality.

The business and, increasingly, the political world uses psychological techniques to read and fulfill our desires, to make their products or speeches as pleasing as possible to us. Curtis raises the question of the intentions and roots of this fact. Where once the political process was about engaging people's rational, conscious minds, as well as facilitating their needs as a society, the documentary shows how by employing the tactics of psychoanalysis, politicians appeal to irrational, primitive impulses that have little apparent bearing on issues outside of the narrow self-interest of a consumer population. He cites Paul Mazer, a Wall Street banker working for Lehman Brothers in the 1930s: "We must shift America from a needs- to a desires-culture. People must be trained to desire, to want new things, even before the old have been entirely consumed. [...] Man's desires must overshadow his needs."

In Episode 4 the main subjects are Philip Gould and Matthew Freud, the great grandson of Sigmund, a PR consultant. They were part of the efforts during the nineties to bring the Democrats in the US and New Labour in the United Kingdom back into power. Adam Curtis explores the psychological methods they now massively introduced into politics. He also argues that the eventual outcome strongly resembles Edward Bernays vision for the "Democracity" during the 1939 New York World's Fair.

According to BBC publicity:

To many in both politics and business, the triumph of the self is the ultimate expression of democracy, where power has finally moved to the people. Certainly the people may feel they are in charge, but are they really? The Century of the Self tells the untold and sometimes controversial story of the growth of the mass-consumer society in Britain and the United States. How was the all-consuming self created, by whom, and in whose interests?

chotto: "I still can't udnertstand why anyone would buy an Apple product. They are utterly, utterly useless."

Superior products, bottom line. Anything else is pretty much garbage. Question: how much of the MP3 music player does iPod have? Question: Are you aware that iPhone is listed as one of the top ten inventions OF ALL TIMES? Why is everyone trying to imitate the iPhone -- the first of any real smart phone? While you may not be able to play 'farm friends' like on Facebook or waste your time with other Flash apps, there are more than 200,000 applications for iPhone and iPad (the latter only just released and already you can use them). How about Docomo's answer to iPhone? How many apps? Can you use them otherwise? What do you prefer? A crappy Windows PC with it's 10 incompatible and conflicting cards, its umpteen dozes OS flaws and errors that require constant updates and plug-ins, and in which you need a new OS every year or so (and which usually copies Apple interfaces)?

Apple products, again, are superior, and dominate more or less any field related to graphics, editing, advertising, art, animation, and just about everything else aside from simple word processing and databasing, in which Microsoft has its majority. People who deny the superiority of Apple products need a medical exam, and iPad is going to dominate and take over the PC world in less than a couple of years. Mark my words... you'll have SONY and Google trying to imitate the iPod in a few months. Why? Apple comes up with the best ideas, and best products. Previous E-pads are garbage intended solely for reading e-books.

While I would never wait two days outside a shop for a product, I say kudos to the kid. I'm waiting until any initial flaws are worked out, and they come out with a second-generation, slightly revamped model (larger memory, etc.). Anyway, it's not much different than people lining up to see a movie like Star Wars or what have you.

Question: how much of the MP3 music player does iPod have?

That's like saying all music is in the Top 40 is the best. Or a DJ in the Top 100 poll is the best in the world. All it means is, the majority of people have shit taste in technology and sound quality. If you like shitty products with shitty sound quality, then good for you. But if you knew anything about music quality, you would sure as hell at least, not own an iPod.

To throw your weak argument back at you, you defeat yourself. By your logic Windows is automatically better because more people use it. Stupidity in the extreme.

Are you aware that iPhone is listed as one of the top ten inventions OF ALL TIMES.

z0MG no wai!!! Top 10 inventions of all time? Ahaha. Better than the wheel, penicillin, discovery of insulin and all those other minor, insiginificant inventions. Who conducted this poll? Apple R&D? Or some idiot on a website "z0mg teh ipohne ownz!!!11one!"

Why is everyone trying to imitate the iPhone -- the first of any real smart phone?

Because if people want to buy shit merchandise, companies will want to build shit merchandise so they can make money off idiots who want to buy it. Economics 101, really. The only good thing the iPhone has going for it is Google Maps. Simple a PHONE should be a freakin' PHONE, not a laptop wannabe. Why the hell would someone want to watch Youtube videos on the move?

What do you prefer? A crappy Windows PC with it's 10 incompatible and conflicting cards, its umpteen dozes OS flaws and errors that require constant updates and plug-ins, and in which you need a new OS every year or so (and which usually copies Apple interfaces)?

Sigh. Someone who doesn't know how to use a PC. Windows XP is by far the most stable OS every built, and blows Apple's attempts out of the water. A new OS every couple of years or so? You must be extremely easy to brainwash with advertising if you think that's the case. If you want raw processing, completely customizable options, large internal drives, better video options, more connectivity then PC's are better for you. Ever heard of something call Linux?

Bottom line... if Steve Jobs made a caesar salad, put an 'i' in front of it, put a plastic cover over it with an Apple logo, and charged $400 for the privilige, the 'cool, independent' idiots would be queuing up to by it in their droves. Yes, you included, because that is exactly it; Apple is for idiots who think they're cool by being "independent and different." But if being Apple fan means having to buy shit products, then I'm glad to say I'm not one of the sheeple.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I've never done that, but I can see that there can be a bit of a thrill in waiting for something that might be sold out in the next 30 days?......I'm glad most products in america you could get on pre-order.

chotto: Have you tried using Mac? you don't know what you're talking about, I use Final cut pro for editing, and It's really a user friendly and really good editing software compare to Windows and Avid. Even great film makers like David Fincher uses and recommends Final cut studio. even great musicians uses Mac, I used windows before and after 1 year im starting to get problems, unlike my Mac book pro, i got it for 3 years now and never experienced any problems until now. Mac also has downsides like low battery life, and bad mouses and the new Ipad sucks, but other than that it's a great machine. You have to use Mac for a purpose especially if you're in the creative scene, it helps creative people a lot!!! so to say that MAC is garbage is stupid or you havent used it before.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

chotto: "I still can't udnertstand why anyone would buy an Apple product. They are utterly, utterly useless."

I run a Man and a PC side by side in my studio set up with similiar installations and power. Bottom line, the Mac never gives me problems of any kind. It runs the software well, it has no technical issues. It works and works with the external devices and systems I use.

The PC is an ongoing struggle. It is a very high end machine and I am very good at maintaining it. Which you need to be with PCs. They have compatibility issues, problems with external devices and a long list of reasons why it is far more painful and high maintenance.

Bottom line, Mac products work and are wonderfully useful. Ipad excluded as I think it is a silly product. PCs are great if your whole purpose is running obscure apps or playing web pirate. Otherwise they are a pain.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Put simply, I don't understand the hostility towards Apple or its enthusiasts. If you don't like their products, don't buy them; don't even acknowledge them. Your silence may be more effective than hostility.

Personally, I see no use of the iPad (for me). But, for some users it would be ideal. I'm an iPhone user, Apple AND Linux enthusiast (gasp). The problem is not everyone wants to master Linux terminal commands and not everyone wants to customize their Linux GUI. Apple refined and made many things simpler. Blah, blah, blah... Life is short, get a Mac.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

i like Mac so much, but Ipad??? I don't like it....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So Takechiyo Yamanaka shown in the photo was the first person to buy iPad at the Ginza Apple store. Wahoo! Yippee! Wow! Great! Huh???

But, there are many stores selling iPad today, Apple and Softbank. Each of those had a first person in line also. For example: Kazuki Miura was the first to obtain Apple's iPad at a Softbank Corp. store in Tokyo's Harajuku district. The news story used the word 'obtain', so maybe he got one for free as opposed to Yamanaka who had to buy his.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

chotto: "That's like saying all music is in the Top 40 is the best. Or a DJ in the Top 100 poll is the best in the world."

Dude, how is Apple owning more than 50% of the MP3 music player MARKET like saying the top 40 songs are the best? I realize I omitted 'market' in my comment, but it was pretty clear all the same, and your analogy is completely off the wall.

"But if you knew anything about music quality, you would sure as hell at least, not own an iPod."

I know plenty about music quality. What MP3 player are you suggesting as an alternative? and don't forget you are choosing from the minority.

"Because if people want to buy shit merchandise, companies will want to build shit merchandise so they can make money off idiots who want to buy it. Economics 101, really."

You obviously would have failed Economics 101, or at least later been sued for very poor and likely ineffective merchandise. You'd be rich in China, though. People copy Apple products because they are superior, beautiful, and work incredibly well in terms of syncing with other products. Most smart-phones that have come after iPhone use an almost IDENTICAL interface, and ALL copy Apple's swipe, pinch (zoom in/out), and obviously touch technology that they perfected. Nonetheless, the others continue to be inferior.

"Simple a PHONE should be a freakin' PHONE, not a laptop wannabe."

If you think one piece of equipment should be used for one purpose, you're going to need an awful lot of rooms in your relic museum to surivive, and a whole lot of hands and free time. Speaking of which, why are you TYPING this out on a computer? Isn't that what the job of a typewriter is? Then you can use morse code to send it to me... I need to find a very old post office, though :)

One reason the iPhone (and soon the iPad) is one of the best inventions in modern history is that it is bringing technology together, and like I said, if you don't like it suit yourself but you'll be stuck with the Luddites in the middle of nowhere.

"Sigh. Someone who doesn't know how to use a PC. Windows XP is by far the most stable OS every built, and blows Apple's attempts out of the water."

Most laughable statement of the day, and likely by a person who's encountered several viruses. How many viruses for Apple products, by the way? How many people bought the two-year late Vista only to realize they couldn't use all their old XP stuff, then quickly bought the new Windows when it was realized Vista was so completely flawed that no one wanted it? PLEASE! Even the original Windows '98 was a copy of Apple's OS from quite a while before, '85 I think.

"Bottom line... if Steve Jobs made a caesar salad, put an 'i' in front of it, put a plastic cover over it with an Apple logo, and charged $400 for the privilige, the 'cool, independent' idiots would be queuing up to by it in their droves."

No they wouldn't. Proof of that is with the iPhone. Why did Docomo reject it as the largest carrier in Japan? Docomo said the Japanese people didn't want/need it because their phones could perform all the functions that iPhone could, and even more. At first this turned out to be true, and Softbank had to introduce special deals like the 'limitless packet plan', free gifts, etc. Now a little more than a year later and Docomo has lost some 20% of its market, with more and more people switching to iPhone because they've realized it's BETTER and can do far more than any other handset on the market. Docomo has had to introduce a smart-phone copy -- again, with a nearly identical interface -- to try and make up lost ground, but too little and too late, with its customers already complaining. And again, with more than 200,000 apps and EVERYONE designing new apps for iPhone (not others), it's the obvious choice for anything.

So again, it was REJECTED at first for its Apple logo, by companies and by people, and then it became massively popular due to its functions, sleek style, and more. Now, SINCE the iPhone is so popular a lot of those people want to automatically buy an iPad, true, but most of the hype and desire to have one is based on peer reviews, and the raving reviews by the media and users in the US, where it's been out for some time.

Oh, and if you don't know the difference between a Caesar Salad and the products Apple produces, you really ought to indeed join the Luddites. :)

dsanjo: "Put simply, I don't understand the hostility towards Apple or its enthusiasts."

People like chotto tend to suffer from something called "buyer's remorse". They have for years bought into an inferior product, and mostly out of pride are unwilling in many cases even to TRY the product, let alone switch to it. They know in some cases it's better, but again they refuse to acknowledge that, even switching to explitives to describe Apple (and I'm surprised the mods are letting chotto's continued use of sh*t stick), and venomous and unfounded slander towards its products and users. I mean, seriously... someone saying Windows is more stable than an Apple OS, in the face of all the obvious flaws, IMMEDIATE plug-ins and security updates due to viruses and loopholes in the system that allow people to access it and the OS to crash, etc., has simply got to be in denial.

In a recent survey done on cell phones, more than 40% of respondents wished they could switch to iPhone. The next highest, 30% or so, I believe, wished they could switch to Google's inferior Android (and yes, I've tried it; it's slower, with far more moving/breakable parts, and an interface which copies iPhone/iTouch), and an even smaller number saying Blackberry and then 'unknown'. When asked if users of Android would switch to iPhone and vice-versa, almost all iPhone users said no, citing the reasons I mentioned above among others, with a few not having tried it. A slightly higher number of Android users said they would switch to iPhone, with the majority of those dead-against changing admitting they had never even tried to use an iPhone.

So again, the easy answer is that people are so adamant against iPod/iPhone and Apple products because they have bought into an inferior system/product, and now that the market is being upset so much thanks to iPod/iPhone/iPad they are lashing out.

I am going to get my iPad an I'm sure I will love it, based on what I've seen/read in the media and reviews. Chotto can wait for two or three more Windows OS updates in the next year or so to come. :)

Maybe the mods have taste too? XP is stable. FACT. Vista was not. And again I repeat, if you feel a need to constantly upgrade, you shoudln't be using a computer in the first place. I've yet to know of one of Apple's supposedly amazing products that hasn't suffered from a re-call.

And really, it's no use getting butt-hurt over people who don't like Apple products. There's plenty of morons queing up to by the iPad that can't even multi-task.

If you let your PC get infected with viruses, you shouldn't be using it. I have NEVER had a virus on my computer (virus software is wonderful y'know?) I'd like to join the Luddities, because at least they wouldn't be using Apple.

Bottom line, you love Apple, and great for you. I don't. It's sweet of you to care, but really, don't get so upset over it.

I've got a phone which can cook food, wash my clothes, play my music, turns into a couch and a bicycle with a few touches of it's gorgeous screen. It's so good. I don't ever need to buy anything else ever again.

Apple products, again, are superior, and dominate more or less any field related to graphics, editing, advertising, art, animation, and just about everything else aside from simple word processing and databasing, in which Microsoft has its majority.

Well to be fair that is because of Adobe, if you take away Adobe's software from the MAC all those graphics, editing, advertising, art, animation "advantage" is gone but then again Adobe's software available on the Mac is also available on a windows pc.

Also of the 200k applications available on the app store how many of them are of any real value? A thousand of them?

Windows pc's are not crappy especially the one that I built.

What apple excels at is creating an excellent User Interface along with creating excellent looking/style hardware products like the mini mac, the iMac, macbook air. That is pretty much it. What Microsoft excels at is excellent developer support and that is pretty much it but that developer support is a very big deal especially if you are in the industry of creating and maintaining software.

The hostility is because Apple and primarily Apple enthusiasts are just so arrogant in their belief that Apple can do no wrong and that their product is automatically superior because it is made by Apple.

chotto:"Bottom line, you love Apple, and great for you. I don't. It's sweet of you to care, but really, don't get so upset over it"

But you said Mac is useless and amateur, which I think it's wrong. Our company produces very professional videos and there are lots of music videos , movies, TV commercials that used Mac as a post production tool. if Mac doesnt offer or meet what you do, then you dont have to use it, but it's wrong to say that it's useless and amateur because we are making good quality videos and making good money because of Mac's applications, And in our field it's really really amazing.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Mac since its beginning was always more artistic/image creation orientated than Windows machines.

This is one of the reason why macs were not popular in the everyday business-world as the focus was different and thus the smaller market penetration.

Personally, I will skip the Ipad(sounds like a womens hygenic product to me).

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Mac is artistic, but not only. I run standard office applications with no issues on Mac. The fact that I can do both creative and practical things on one machine is wonderful.

In the past I kept a PC for running the odd apps that Mac did not, but this problem has largely disappeared with the small exception of apps oriented toward cracks and piracy. If you are not a pirate, then you have few things to give up by being on Mac. And you gain stability. Side by side hour for hour my Mac outperforms my PC by a huge gap in both time spent and costs to sort problems.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

chotto: First and foremost, relax, bro. I'm not upset in the least by what you've said. I WAS a little surprised that the mods let you keep sh&t on there for so long only because my comments, and more or less everyone else's, get deleted for profanity pretty quickly, but that's all.

"I have tried Apple and their oh-so-inventive and amateur products, which is precisely how I know I hate them."

My guess is you picked them up wearing some sterile glove and a massive look of disgust on your face... in other words, extreme bias. My first computer (unless you want to argue Commodore 64 was a computer) was a Tandy 1000, and then I followed that with a Windows PC, and another. Windows machines are useless outside of wordprocessing and Databasing. Everyone else can be done far better, and with far fewer problems on an Apple computer. It's admirable that you have had no viruses and suffered none of the endless problems Windows brings with it to all of it's users save a few, and I'm only sorry you have to spend every ounce of your day maintaining that very unstable situation. Glad you can agree that Microsoft, the company that of course produces all Windows OS products, made a massive failure with Vista. But to pretend that the subsequent Apple OS X copy that came out later is more stable than the Apple OS it copied is a bit funny.

"The hostility is because Apple and primarily Apple enthusiasts are just so arrogant in their belief that Apple can do no wrong and that their product is automatically superior because it is made by Apple."

Completely hypocritical; the difference being the waning numbers of Windows users in MANY fields compared to the increase in Apple users in so many fields adds proof to the argument that Apple is superior and more and more people are realizing that, whereas you are just blowing smoke. That sinking ship you're on.... ummm... your screeching doesn't make it more buoyant.

A lot of Apple users are arrogant, I agree, but it's the kind of arrogance backed up by proof of product superiority; like pointing out someone who's a genius is arrogant because of it -- they often have reason to be, as undesirable as it may be, and you can't really do anything about it. It's very unlike the guy sitting at his computer, about as good as a door-stop, saying his Windows XP is the greatest thing in the world because it has the same functions as a typewriter.

Anyway, I'm glad as well that you are loyal to your product while ignoring the obvious. Loyalty is a good thing. The guy with the feather in his hand that said it was superior to the fountain pen helped those selling things they stole from birds all that much longer. :)

Noliving: Agreed on the Adobe comment, but then if they are available on both, why does everyone prefer Apple? Watch any TV show, or movie, and you see the back of a computer with the Apple logo, or Apple mentioned in the credits, etc.

"Everyone else" should read EVERYTHING else.

Sheesh... this Windows computer I'm on at work... you change the word and even then it insists on auto-correcting it back to another word, despite me shutting auto-correct off several times.

Oh, and chotto, if you really were with the Luddites I hope you know you wouldn't be able to use your beloved Windows, either. No technology whatsoever would be permitted (at least 'technology' as far as electronics are concerned).

They'd make an exception for XP ;-)

My real beef is with iPods. Their sound quality is greatly lacking, almost poor. Thus I don't understand why so many people buy them, like I don't understand why so many people like all the crap in the Top 40 music charts.

It's not a question of being 'loyal' to anything, it's a question about what does things best. Maintaining my laptop has required zero-maintenance, save for virus updates. If Apple made good stuff, I'd use that, but fact is I don't beleive they do. I like the Google Maps feature on the iPhone but that's it. And I'm not in a hurry to buy an app that makes a toilet flushing sound anytime soon, save for the time if I bought an iPad.

If your PC is slow, there is something wrong with it. My Lenovo laptop is over 3 years old and it runs lightening-fast. Very happy with it.
