When cycling meets sumo

Argos-Shimano team rider Marcel Kittel of Germany, left, wearing a mawashi, or sumo-belt, takes part in traditional sumo wrestling training as cyclists Christopher Froome of Britain (3rd R), Rui Costa of Portugal (4th R) and Christophe Riblon of France (2nd R) watch at Saitama Sakae junior and senior high school in Saitama, on Friday. The cyclists are in Japan for the Saitama criterium races this weekend.

A rare picture where Japanese guys are fat and white guys are skinny LOL

Interesting to see if the 'legs' will make a difference in pushing your opponent out of the ring.

In real life the thinner guy would b.. slap the other guy and run. He would never be caught!!

From this picture it seems the cyclist has no chance. Look at his long legs and his posture is not as stable.

I once tried sumo, during the open day at Ryogoku stadium. Hitting and pushing the young sumo player facing me felt not unlike running into a big tree.

Was there a "revenge match" on those sleek racing bikes?

The sumo guy has definitely got better posture and I predict he will win when they get around to publishing the next pic in the series.

KnowBetter- The legs of the sumo guy right? You know how they train? The sumo guys are far stronger.

True, the cyclist, with his weight and the way he charging the guy and not well-balanced would be tossed aside (or even over the head) easily, but then, he's a cyclist and the other guy a sumo wrestler.

It's a nice photo, and no doubt a great cultural experience for all involved. Nice.

Why are the cyclists wearing those ridiculous things under their mawashi?

Probbly those're either their cycling garb, or more likely, the traditional wrestling outfit of their home country.
