Workers climb the frame to prepare paper lanterns ahead of the annual Mitama Festival at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on Sunday. Over 30,000 lanterns light up the precincts of the shrine, where more than 2.4 million war dead are enshrined, during the four-day festival from July 13 to 16.

A fabulously beautiful and spectacular and visually stunning celebration of the souls of the departed Mitama Matsuri.

So can I go see the festival without being labelled a rightist war criminal worshiper?

What is actually written on the lanterns? Names of sponsors?
Sunrise777
There are two types of the lanterns, large and small. Large one is 12000 yen, Small is 3000 yen. The amount exceeds 30 thousand. The picture shows large ones. They write the name who donated the shrine on the lanterns. Some are the personal names, and the others are groups including corporations.

Those A-class war criminals resting at Yasukuni were the reason for all of Japan's atrocities until 1945, and grass grows back unless you get the root out.

Thanks for the explanation Sunrise777

@CrazyJoe, there are no bodies at Yasukuni, just an honorary plaque with a name on it. The only actually bodies that are rumored to be there are those of Koreans and Chinese who fought for the Japanese and were not claimed.
Anyway, don't forget that McArthur wanted to destroy the temple and build a dog racing track (really!), but the Papal envoy said all countries have the right to respect their war dead and the plan was cancelled.

As Yasukuni will tell you themselves you can not remove a spirit once it has been interred in Yasukuni
I have often times said that Japan needs a secular shrine, much like the Peace Memorial Wall in Okinawa, dedicated to ALL the dead, from all the countries involved in the war and once it's built there would no longer be any need to go to Yasukuni.
CrazyJoe
I heard Mcarthur had the bodies (Tojo and others) cremated in Yokohama and the ashes dumped into the Pacific Ocean.
