It's that time of year again when the Hilton in Osaka breaks out its G-guage model train set which they proudly display in the center of their huge lobby. This is the 8th year for this set-up which is designed to inspire donations for orphans at the Osaka-based Hakukaisha foster home. In previous years, donations went to support children in Tohoku and to the Philippine Typhoon Disaster Relief fund.
This enchanting 300-meter display was designed in Germany by Gerry McElligott. McElligott is world famous for creating holiday train displays for more than 20 years. He started Christmas train landscaping at the Hilton hotel in Guam and over the years has expanded to many other cities including Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Nagoya and Shanghai. Visitors are encouraged to visit his display and take pictures or share videos via social media.
The next big event at the Hilton Osaka will be the tasty Stollen German cake event. Stollen is a cake-like fruit bread made with yeast, water and flour, and usually with zest added to the dough. The cake contains candied orange peel and candied citrus peel (Zitronat), raisins and almonds, and different spices such as cardamom and cinnamon. Two slices will sell for a very affordable 320 yen and a full 40cm cake will sell for 2,700 yen. This will be a one day only sale and musical event on Saturday, Dec 17. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.
