Then you must feel very comfortable when Russian prime minister spent a holiday on 'Northern' islands, now belongs to Russia.

On Friday, two members of the municipal assembly of Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture, landed on Minami Kojima, one of the islands, on a trip that might have violated a law by entering an off-limits area.

Did they get permission from the government for their trip?

The Japanese central government has leased part of the islands from Japanese landowners and prohibits people from landing on them.

This is the most troubling part--what's to stop these landowners from turning around and leasing the islands to China?

sarahsuz25, well for some reason the central government wants these islands to be empty. The landowners are being forced to lease the land to the government now just like the landowners on Okinawa.

OssanAmerica: Those islands are rewards for Russian to start wars against Japan, promised my US. Russian fulfilled its part, so they keep those islands.

It is very natural that Japanese should land on the islands or walk around there for hours as these belong to Japan's territory. What seems to be wrong? Nothing!

Why doesn't China stop interfering in Japan's "internal affairs"? (Tell me if you've heard that line before...)

Do you really, really believe that its natural to land on a remote island and wander around it for hours? How often do you do it?

"traces of things associated with Japanese people who once lived there"? So they video'd the trash washed up all over the beaches huh? There's Japanese trash on beaches all over the Pacific, that doesn't prove ownership!

No you're very much mistaken. The United States had objected to the Soviets occupying them in 1951 at the time of the Washington Treaty. Recommend you study some history before commenting.

These two irresponsible assemblymen have started a chain reaction. In the future, when push comes to shove, the japanese will probably go crying to their american masters.

Naive act

What's wrong with landing there? Maybe they went there for a vacation.

OssanAmerica : I am very sorry to tell you that the agreement had been signed ~10 years (early 1940s) before US objection in 1951.
