Thatcher had the Iron Lady image, so I guess that must be it?

Somehow I don't think ol' Maggie would have dug the pink hair, motorcycle or drumming for a rock band :)- Ms. Takaichi is more Eva Peron than Margaret Thatcher.

Takaichi, 60, was first elected to parliament in 1993 and her role model is Margaret Thatcher.

This I don’t really get.

The kinds of economic policies she proposes are pure big government socialism, of the type that I imagine Thatcher would have fought against.

The headline just shows us that the the LDP is Japan. How else could you have political opposites in the same party otherwise?

which begs the question: is this country really a democracy?

@bokuda

These 2 are colleagues of the same political party. Not political opposites.

they represent very different ends of the LDP.

Takaichi is a rabid ultranationalist, Thatcher-loving, war mongering, racist, sexist, bigoted misogynist. Noda is none of that.

That's so funny mentioning Marxism and the LDP in the same sentence.

The issue is that there are two ways Marxist is being used in this thread:

1) People referring to actual Marxism, which can be found in the dictionary

2) Right-wing extremists, using the term "Marxism" as a catch-all for whatever they consider to be evil on agiven day, something akin to the boogeyman, which doesn't actually have any relation to the political ideology Marx created at all. They do the same thing with the word Socialist, and they use these interchangeably.

Once you realize that your usage of the word is different to theirs, it makes things a little less confusing.

No one should want Japan to become as polarized and divided based upon a myriad of identities as the US has become.

The policies she advocates are not Marxist in any way, no more than the Suffragette Movement in the US was Marxist. Advocacy of woman's rights considerably predate Marxism. You might be surprised to find equal rights for women was advocated by Guiseppi Garibaldi before the US Civil War, and US refusal to grant women the right to vote was one of the reasons Garibaldi turned down an offer of a Generalship in the Union Army (immediate emancipation of all slaves was another precondition Lincoln could not then meet) where his world renown skills as a combat leader were highly sought. He instead devoted himself to liberating Italy from the grips of the papal rule, defeating the Papal States and creating a unified Italy. Every progressive idea is not Marxist. Most predate Marxism.

Nora sounds like an arch-Marxist. Diversity bean counters are the last thing Japan needs. No one should want Japan to become as polarized and divided based upon a myriad of identities as the US has become.

“She will emphasize her achievement in breaking the glass ceiling and declare that Japan is already a gender equal country, even that it is ahead of the United States."

So Takaichi is delusional. Hard pass. Though as many posters here have said, neither female candidate have a snowball's chance in hell. Covid is more likely to vanish overnight than Japan getting a female PM this year.

WOW a cat fight, instead of Japanese women supporting each other they divide and conquer them by having them fight for political position which neither will win.

And how would you describe this equivalent situation if it were two men?

Wow, a cock fight. Instead of Japanese men supporting each other, they divide and conquer them for having them fight for political position.

Sounds pretty silly don't it.

Interesting and surprising that someone who once worked for a liberal US member of Congress, Patricia Schroeder, turns out to be so far to the political right and seemingly so anti-feminist.

Yes, and the vote for one of these women is a vote for the extreme right. That narrows the choice down a bit. They will just vote for a man!

Japan already has a weak image. Pacifist image. Hello Kitty.

Having a Woman in power will only make Japan look Softer, Weaker.

Putin, Xi, Kim will run over this women, push Japan around even more, even worse!

Dear USA so strong, so feminist, so progressive!! Yet no Woman President!! ..... Who did you vote for?? Grab them by the what Trump. Spare me the Bull Western propaganda.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Interesting how they don't call each other nasty names, as has become the practice in the USA after Trump.

There are such so many problems that await us in the next years... we need strong and smart politicians, I honestly don't care "how" they use the toilet. Their sex is the last of my priority.

They might as well have 50 women and Kono up for PM.

What’s the difference?

Kono has already been decided long before any of this even started.

Neither of them will win, and that's for the better.

This article is absolutely ridiculous and shares personal details of the candidates that are irrelevant to politics.

What the purpose of this announcement is unclear as it appears Japanese people are insulting themselves.

If gender equality is not an issue then why write an article about it .

Cruel joke !

You see in Germany how the great democracy is working as SPD and CDU are almost equally divided or how in Iceland the new parliament is made half by women.

Then you have here a country which seems to don’t fully comprehend the values of a true democracy with basically a mono state party ruled by extreme right wingers and ultra conservative boys.

Even if one of the women will win nothing will change.

It’s LDP/ Nippon Kaigi.

2 women, political opposites,

Neither have them have a chance in hell of being nominated. I suppose it's nice to keep alive the pretense that men and women are equal in Japan though!
