Abe blew this.

18 ( +20 / -2 )

I’m still waiting for the two masks...

20 ( +23 / -3 )

This current government spends far too long in meetings and discussions and gets nothing actually done.

A good example of the pathetic ineptitude is Koike's ordering izakaya's to close by 8PM. This shows a complete non understanding of the situation. Abe's promise of "two masks per household" is utterly ridiculous. Two masks are going to last how long?

Disaster response by the LDP is itself a disaster. While the world crashes around them, they hold meetings and talk about it.

25 ( +26 / -1 )

Some 52 percent of respondents in Japan feared they or someone in their family could become infected with the virus, lower than 90 percent in Italy, 87 percent in South Korea and 78 percent in Britain.

Yeah, b/c commuter trains continue to be packed in those nations, just like in Tokyo or Osaka, right? And supermarket lines have people bumping you from behind in London or Rome. Or oh yeah, I'm sure the number of tests in those countries is as ridiculously low as they are here.

But I can't entirely blame the people for this profoundly ignorant notion. The government itself was walking about without masks and sitting elbow to elbow in endless committee meetings until a week ago. And telling us how the Olympics were going to the best evah until the end of March.

19 ( +19 / -0 )

Lol nice to be able to poll yourself and have your LDP flyer (NHK) print it up for ya.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

Japan emergency mentality: too little, too late. passive aggressive. Recipe for a disaster.

16 ( +16 / -0 )

The other 38% responded how? This number is pretty damn low it seems to me! No matter or not if it is before Abe declared an emergency, his failure to act sooner has caused people to die!

He WASTED over a month, twiddling his fingers, lying through his teeth, and whitewashing the seriousness of the spread in Japan, all in the name of wanting to be the host of the Olympics!

I question the validity, or at least the mental capabilities to comprehend anything of the 38%!

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Of those surveyed in Japan, 23 percent said the government was handling the virus crisis well.

That's most likely the percentage of corporate Japan with their hand out for some relief funds.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

UPDATE: The virus is still in its early stages and is still being handled poorly!

16 ( +16 / -0 )

According to a poll conducted by myself, 100% of respondents said the government’s handling of the situation sucked.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

My brother in OZ already rcvd' the Aussie gvt' cash handout last week while I have no idea whether I'm eligible or how to apply here if I were let alone how much it will be.

The gvt's response is a joke. Didn't Abe (no 'San' ever again from me as he's not worthy) talk about ramping up domestic production of masks about a month ago? What happened to that I wonder.

It's time to continue to stay home as much as possible and stay safe. It's also time to talk to your Japanese friends (especially the younger generation) about the power and purpose of using their voting rights when the time comes.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Considering how the country is prone to disaster, Japan is really bad at handling disaster.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

Next election winner : LDP

No change anyway

13 ( +13 / -0 )

It is because they thought the Olympics happening was still a possibility.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

too little to late, still nothing being done down here on Okinawa too.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Imagine that, the Japanese poll regarding how the government here has responded to the crisis is right in line with a US poll asking Americans how they feel about Trump's administration's handling of the crises there.....hmmmm...

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Imagine that, the Japanese poll regarding how the government here has responded to the crisis is right in line with a US poll asking Americans how they feel about Trump's administration's handling of the crises there.....hmmmm...

Abe is a lemming that followed the UK and the US off of a cliff. They are now suffering the consequences!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

This whole article is vague and abstruse (KYODO), without any accompanying data or independent research.

Where is the auditing process substantiating these statistics?

Some 52 percent of respondents in Japan feared they or someone in their family could become infected with the virus, lower than 90 percent in Italy, 87 percent in South Korea and 78 percent in Britain.

How many respondents, and the listing of items or quantities that differentiate the grammatical analysis of the sum or statistical conclusion?

Take a pinch of salt, when coming to a conclusion. Sorry there is little or nothing to validate the article.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Toohey,

That's funny and what's more in my survey 100% of respondents also said the government's response sucked.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Some 52 percent of respondents in Japan feared they or someone in their family could become infected with the virus, lower than 90 percent in Italy, 87 percent in South Korea and 78 percent in Britain.

Or in other words 48% of Japanese are good at math, while only 13% of South Koreans are.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why did the poll not ask reason for dissatisfaction? Should have stopped arrival from China right from the beginning and enforced it rigorously. Pro-China officials on this matter and business corporations should be held responsible.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

We've seen all this government indecisiveness and ineptitude before. Remember 1945? Unfortunately, the Japanese government has never brooked criticism or taken responsibility for its mistakes and misdeeds. This preventable pandemic is no exception because they know that most citizens are equally indecisive, unless this pandemic becomes a game changer for Japanese society with political repercussions. Is anyone holding their breath?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

At least this is not a poll carried out on 1200 respondents for a country of 120000000 people.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The virus is open for business until 8pm at your local pub. Don’t miss it.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

A good example of the pathetic ineptitude is Koike's ordering izakaya's to close by 8PM. This shows a complete non understanding of the situation.

Oh they understand the situation quite well, it's all about money! Not lives, money!

By "urging" them to limit their hours of operation from 1700 to 2200 they, the government, can avoid having to pay any compensation to them,or should I say "limit" the compensation they WILL pay eventually.

Due to the laws here, they can not order them to close, and yet the people going out to them have a responsibility as well, but it's obvious that people are not going to listen.

So just like you wrote in a different thread, it's about your choosing to not understand about how things work here

2 ( +3 / -1 )

It's also time to talk to your Japanese friends (especially the younger generation) about the power and purpose of using their voting rights when the time comes

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME,THEY WILL NEVER TAKE ANY LOGICAL ADVICE FROM A Gyjin

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The 62 percent disapproval rating compares with 76 percent of people in Thailand saying their government's handling of the crisis was poor, 46 percent in the United States and 44 percent in Germany.

Quoting just for context. US and Germany have about the same dispproval ratings about the way the virus was handled

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Number ought to be 100%. Abe did nothing for two months cause he wanted to protect the

Olympics and business, damn the lives of the people living in Japan. It has been a s**t storm

for the last month with dithering on the national emergency announcement and then interfering

in prefectural procedures like in Tokyo. If this huge failure does not finish Abe for good the Japanese people and this country truly are doomed.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

According to the poll, 32 percent of respondents in Japan were prepared to sacrifice some of their human rights if it would aid in curbing the spread of the virus, while 48 percent would not

48% would not... I am concerned. is the 23% that thinks the gov is doing a good job incld in this group?

@japanoob i certainly couldn't get. one of the clause is "got to be in australian soil at the time of application".

0 ( +0 / -0 )

the government in Japan is a joke -simple.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The number to be real will tell with time or time will tell with real number. In Japan the citizens to avoid infection from Covid-19, it's with the conditions the govt. effectively pay back (even a portion). As much govt. says economy first the citizens want to find ways to understand what is that. Very unique point in Japan. Gallup International Association members have problems in their countries and how to think Japan position? Before all of discussions, are the numbers real? Countries have different ways to show numbers on graphic displayed. It's still pointless to me.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The US has 46% disapproval rating so the survey must be reliable

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Who are the 40% who think he nailed it??

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Only 60 percent! The other 40% must be on hallucinogens or living in an alternate universe.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Its only 46% in the US according to the same survey and article

0 ( +2 / -2 )

60% in Japan feel gov't handled early stages of virus poorly

Can we assume that this means that 40% of Japanese are as dimwitted as the 40% of Americans that support Trump

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Why don’t they use Avigan ?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Over 60 percent of people surveyed in Japan last month said their government was not handling the coronavirus outbreak well,

Which is not too bad when you consider the same poll would probably show 100% in the US, Italy, Spain, etc.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The US has 46% disapproval rating so the survey must be reliable

Yes. It seems to lack credibility. FWIW, Statista claims that on April 8 only 33% percent of respondents in the United States stated that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their national government's response to the pandemic.

There must be a truckload of ambivalent people in the US.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

What constitutes the correct answer of handling it right?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Time for a change in governance then

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Opinion polls at this stage lof the game when we have a major pandemic is not necessarily the best reporting.

Everyone, has a "negative" attitude at this time toward everyone and everything else that burdens that person. When there is doubt and when there is limited factual information that the entire system and the population has and can rely on... any action taken unless it has immediate positive results, will be taken negatively. In a pandemic where actions within (domestic) and external (international/global) affects everything, taking surveys of opinions are not the very best. In this case it is worse than taking opinion polls about the US elections or approval of any candidate. There is no fundamental "basis" to tie the target questions to. The facts are changing constantly minute by minute and not all have the same or similar information to base their opinions on.

It is like giving the pandemic infection rate without testing sufficient percentage of the population. The problem of WHO and China.

So such opinion polls become more political than necessary at a time such as this. It takes away the needed authority of those trying to make better and the participation and cooperation of the population to get over this pandemic.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No perfect govt, so don't claim that you are.

60% isn't bad, given the situation on the ground. If Japan did a bad job, what about those govts who ignore the problem from the very beginning ?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Won't really matter though. Japanese government don't need people's support on anything, because they are the only choice, so they would win no matter what. Unlike other countries (e.g. Korea), Japan won't ever protest en mass against the government, so the government really have nothing to fear.

Maybe Abe will leave, but he is on his last term anyways, but LDP the traditional politician families will always win.

60% isn't bad, given the situation on the ground. If Japan did a bad job, what about those govts who ignore the problem from the very beginning ?

Exactly, there's a lot of core supporters of the government that their are no risk to the government class. And Japan is very much still ignoring the problem, as far as Japanese government is concerned, there's no "widespread" infection in Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I dont think they care nor does it effect them for going to work like a robot. their mentality is: dont need to get better, but dont need to change anything either. dochi demo ii. just stay within the grey..like a shadowy figure.
