70% should know the world balance, it's govt. survey. But, Japan diplomatic matters are the worst in this 21st century with China, Russia, Iran and much more with NK, and SK imbalanced situation. America of Trump provocative actions to them is making much military power against. I don't think we need confrontation by force, but real power in table talk. Economy section is another subject, early to be mentioned here, too weak the world is now, this pandemic period of time won't resolve real situations happening. Insecurity alliance should be the right word now.

Once Putin's Puppet is gone, in less than 9 months, that approval rating will go up even more.

70% happy to live in a colony.

Nice score. It is sad that people are so uneducated that they accept the ruling by a foreign gvt as positive.

That's partly the fault of the opposition parties. Edano of the PDCJ is a strong supporter of the Japan-US security alliance. Not because it's something I wished for or accepted willingly. Only because it is the main impediment to people not requesting immediate reform of Article 9. Of which he is a staunch defender at the extreme.

A reform of that Article. would give Japan more autonomy and less dependence on the United States. Unfortunately, the country's leftist wing is preventing this advance for purely electoral reasons.

It's an annually scheduled survey. That it can't be suspended. Since it's a requirement of the United States itself. Within the text of the Japan-US security alliance itself. This survey has been conducted continuously for 60 years.

FYI the US in South Korea is not an occupation army ...

Yes, the American flag flies over Korean Customs in ICN airport. I've never seen that in Japan.

If you think the US is occupying Japan, maybe ask someone in Iraq what that was like in 2003-2005.

Are 1,000 responses sufficient for an accurate survey?

As long as you are surrounded by unfriendly nations with nuclear powers, US military will not go anywhere soon.

Things were set up by the US in the post-war era (i.e. massive import of Hollywood films, installation of a pro-US political party, etc.) to ensure that the majority of Japanese would come to view the US in a positive light, so those type of survey results are to be expected.

Time to ditch this unfair and unilateral treaty. Why should we agree to defend Japan when they don't agree to defend us. This is the only one of our defense treaties which is not for mutual defense. Plus the Japanese use it to evade taking their share of the common defense.

The President should give Japan 3 years notice of our intent to abrogate and tell them that he's happy to discuss a fair and bilateral treaty if they're interested.

The US won't allow it to happen.

Wikileaks revealed to us that the US spies and controls the entire nation of Japan. CIA monitors the Imperial Family, Prime Minister household and bosses of the Keiretsus. Japan was forced to establish the NSA facilities inside the country, which they are used to spy on Japan and further intelligence activities against China. The idea of Japan getting a military with a full independence from the US is impossible. Japan will get its military back unless it supports the American wars.

The badly edged side of the dagger here is that the US will probably abuse the new acquired military of Japan for some 24h adventures elsewhere. They would force Japan (as similar as UK during Gulf War) to bring armies the faraway places fighting in the name of freedom. Such policies would cost a lot of money for Japanese, already poor taxpayers.
