Abe likely to pledge something for everyone in election campaign

Yeah, and deliver nothing, as he has done in the past. Not one of his 'pledges' from previous campaigns has been fulfilled. There has been no increase in child or aged care, salaries have not increased, family payments have not increased, child poverty has increased, the sales tax increase was billed as way to lessen the public debt, which did not happen, consumer spending has dropped 10-25% depending on the market sector and his 'three arrows of economic recovery' turned into three great piles of poop! The economy is even more stagnant than when he took over. He is a fraud!

Abe is considering calling the lower house poll when the legislature convenes on Sept 28 to take advantage of his improved ratings and disarray in the opposition, ruling party and government sources have said.

That's the second time he does that right ? How democratic...

Let's hope the voters will not fall for the same promises he didn't keep already.

"I don't dismiss the possibility of the voters giving Abe a nasty surprise," said Gerry Curtis, professor emeritus at Columbia University in New York.

buahahaha...maybe this guy has been out of japan too long. this is the country that has allowed the ldp almost unfettered rule since ww2. the sheep that is this electorate is too complacent and without a viable opposition party, the ldp will be laughing all the way to the voting booth.

Since foreigners on PR visa's can't vote, it most certainly is not something for everyone.

Does he understand that all the issues spotted are now on him and his wife to be resolved?

Given the state of the opposition, he could say everyone is getting bugger all and still win.

A pledge, only at the expense future generations have to account for. This is an frankly an outrageous.

Jimizo - Given the state of the opposition, he could say everyone is getting bugger all and still win.

Yep! And, that's how it's been in Japan for over the last half century.

But but, it's democracy!!!

Apologies for my grammar, it is furniture kicking time, blatant political opportunism,  pledge and promise for others to pay later.

But but, it's democracy!!!

At least freedom of speech is still allowed in some quarters. Aso's hobby is referencing the Nazis and he still keeps his job.

There really isn't much else to be said after reading the comments. Everyone who has commented seems to be united in the view that:

It's all a pile of poop.

All promises with zero delivery, except of course what he doesn't promise which does actually receive attention.

Not much anyone can do about it since there is no one else to vote for.

Not sure why Abe-San is bothering with a snap election.

I just want the third arrow that he promised five years back.

Reckon my chances are excruciatingly thin though.

Worse than the pledges of second hand car sales men are pledges of third generation politicians.

Never let a good crisis go to waste?

Unsurprisingly opportunistic. Just following the family playbook.

Sound familiar?

Please say he's joking! Nothing disturbs me more than those blaring election vans inching down every main street.

The steps which PM Abe intends to take for the benefit of the Japanese public , his success is certain in the yet to be announced general election. He is expected to retain two third majority in the lower house and is not likely to face any challenge from the opposition parties. His support rating is likely to zoom in the coming days.

Can you promise to eliminate the state secrets law for me? ... Oh wait you don't keep your promises anyway, Mr. Abe.

In a one party state he can say whatever he wants without consequence. Pledge Pledge Pledge Pledge Pl....

The steps which PM Abe intends to take for the benefit of the Japanese public...

What, like calling an election? Um... that's for his own benefit, not anyone else's.

By law there has to be an election by autumn of 2018, so Abe is calling the election now because his ratings have gone up, and combined with the DJP being in disarray, there is no better time than between now and the end of the year for him to call the election.

It's only being called a "snap-election" because it is being held ahead of scheduled elections.

Also, Abe faces some serious backlash because he is now in a position where he has to raise the consumption tax to 10% by next year, and if he does it before the election he faces the chance that the public will vote against his party. Also if he doesn't raise the tax he faces the same thing, as he has put it off twice now, due to economic conditions (many of which he is responsible for with his misguided "arrows") and if he doesnt raise it, and calls it off, he faces the same backlash for not carrying out his promises.

It's now or never kind of thinking.

Yes.  Because that's all he ever does. Pledge.
