Japan has really dropped the ball. I love Japan, and fly there every other year from the US for vacation. I had another trip schedule for the the first week of April with a large group of friends and family, but given their poor management of this outbreak - we will all probably cancel. I know of many other friends who were considering joining us, who have now also abandoned their plans. You've already lost 15 tourists among my circle of family and friends, who knows how many more you've actually lost.

You took forever to block flights from wuhan, but still allow flights from all other parts of china? One of the infections we got in the US was from a person that drove from wuhan to shanghai, and then took a flight to San Jose, California. Can you imagine how many have traveled to japan via another provinces? No mandatory tests, just roll the dice and let people walk in and do whatever. You are super OCD about cleanliness and manners, but during a pandemic you're completely apathetic? Is the government just incompetent or really desperate for chinese money?

If the total count is 86 people but Japan only count 21 as the 61 from the ship are excluded, who are the 4 people missing ?

If the governement is so scared to have high number they should just always differentiate in their number : indigenous contamination, returnee from Wuhan, traveler.

You're probably reading the Yomiuri. Sorry, bud, but on February 5th it was officially 33 after 10 new cases were confirmed within the borders, and now the count is 86 as of today. I know for you and others it is a kind of contest, and you'd rather believe a lie for lower numbers, but the important thing here is FACTS in order that we avoid further spread. Remember, it was Japan downplaying all this to begin with and letting people go without any kind of quarantine to begin with that started the major spread here.

Put all your eggs in a basket, rely on China for everything, manufacturing things, tourism, etc. this is what you get. I hope people realize this fast! South East Asia is pretty much untapped, it's time to switch partners Japan.

Singapore has 33 cases now with a few local infections not related with any known cases, which is of a worry and suggests a spread among communities.

As for Japan, it does like the majority of countries, checking temperatures at the port of entries, airport included, and when deemed necessary the virus check. It is technically impossible to check everyone.

The US said everyone coming from China will be banned on in quarantine for US residents. Is that possible technically? What about travelers from Singapore , Thailand or Japan who now are some potential virus spreaders. I was optimistic till a few days ago but getting pessimistic about the ongoing of the virus. In a matter of weeks, all Asian countries could face a travel ban.

So instead of worrying about, oh, I don't know, stopping the virus, Abe and the Big Aso have a meeting a press conference about propping up spending?

Let me guess, more stimulus spent via paving rivers and building stuff while study groups of geriatric oyaji meet once a month on million yen a month salaries to discuss the problem?

If Japan actually removed their restrictive testing barriers, the “confirmed” numbers should explode simply by looking at the vast number of tourists who came in and the infectivity of this disease.

If you are Japanese and hasnt been to Hubei province and cannot without a doubt prove that you have been in contact with someone from Hubei province showing symptoms, you are not qualified to get diagnosed.

Even if Japan gets to full blown epidemic with 10,000s of local transmission cases, it won’t get reported because no one would get tested for the “confirmed” cased.

Good old Japan... start thinking of a plan a good two weeks after businesses in major tourist areas (especially those frequented by Chinese) have been severely affected. This is a job for Captain Hindsight! Japan is now the #2 country in the world in terms of outbreak, and that's not including all those on the cruise ship. People have already started cancelling tours to Japan, and with the Olympics but a few months away that is a BIG problem, and clear evidence Japan has no contingencies in plan for emergencies.

Isn’t it just to set the criteria for diagnosis tests so high so that barely anyone qualifies to be tested and therefore Japan can continue to report low numbers???
