I really never understood why Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize when he was elected as President of the USA.
And to this day I still dont, and if "intentions" are enough to win the prize the world is full of people who deserve it too!
Cricky
He might want to skip that lunch, as for the Nobal he is the first non white President of the USA, now that's worth a prize.
Yubaru
So you are saying he won the Nobel because of the color of his skin and not for any other reason? Look at the criteria for the Nobel Peace prize.
http://quakernobel.org/criteria
What did Obama do to meet these criteria? Did he make a sustained contribution of peace BEFORE winning the election? What "work" or what did he "accomplish" with regards to peace issues prior to being elected?
Sorry, "winning an election" to me, based upon good intentions, something just isnt right.

Abe to have lunch with Obama on Sunday
aww... wadda matta abe chan?? Trump isn't your best friend anymore?
geronimo2006
Wouldn't want to sneeze when you're doing that greeting.

I am quite surprised that Obama agreed to this meeting. This will give Abe cover over all of the scandals going on here in Japan. Like it or not, Obama is still a very well respected and loved figure here, and anybody seen with him will give them a bump. I can see why Abe was dying for this meeting, but whoever is advising Obama, has made a big mistake.

Welcome President Obama!
I had been critical, luke-warm at best, about many aspects of Obama's years in office, but in hindsight, in comparison with the disaster the Trump presidency's been, Obama's years as president now seem brilliant.
Though Obama might not have been a spectacular president, as a human being he was an exemplar of integrity, a man who lived his life to the highest standards.
Especially in comparison with the deplorable man currently in the White House.

Apparently, you aren't the only one.

Big welcome to the once and future President of the US. Japan loves you.
Don't be slumming it with Abe, though.
Cricky
No, he was the first African American to become the highest Office Holder in America an amazing achievement considering American History, that deserves a prize. He is also a nice man. As was Nelson Mandela. Churchill, Albert Einstein, Gandy. They and many more that have improved the human race on some level. Race skin colour has nothing to do with it, achievements do. And he should skip this lunch.
dcog9065
That will be a good meeting, they were both so close during his time in office
Cricky
Yes a Nobel laureate bit of a stretch, but at least he donated the money to charity and not seen him wearing it. Still the lunch thing is a bad idea.
Goodlucktoyou
Obama won his Nobel because he was very good at starting wars and destroying the Middle East and creating IS. Abe would love to go to war too. Maybe abe is after a Nobel peace prize too?
Bintaro
Think what you want about Obama, one think you can't deny is that he improved the USA's standing in the world.
Bush destroyed the USA's reputation with the war in Iraq.
Then it improved under Obama.
And Trump crushed it into the ground.

Obama didn't start any wars, and the middle east was destroyed by the Bush administration, which resulted in the creation of ISIS.
JeffLee
@Goodlucktoyou
What wars did Obama "start"?
History lesson time. ISIS morphed from several groups, centering around Jamāʻat al-Tawḥīd wa-al-Jihād, founded in 1999 by al-Zarqawi.

Yubaru,
I don't think Obama himself did either, in hind sight clearly he should have simply declined. He was given the honour figuring he would generate PEACE, but this was clearly too early not only at the time awarded, but afterwards as the repubs handicapped his entire 8yrs in office minimizing what COULD have been sadly.
toshiko
I think nice lunch. For Trump, Humberger for thhhhree meals for three days.

Some people don't like Japanese food, and there are some amazing hamburgers in Tokyo.

I believe Obama tried very hard as all president do, but because of congress not being with him, he could not do many things. I am extremely liberal, but not a socialist, so I disagreed a lot with his agenda. I do wish him luck in the future.
I wish Abe luck in the future as well, but not as the head of Japan.
Jimizo
Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for not being Bush.
A decent poke in the eye/joke on the part of the Nobel committee.
This award has been almost completely devalued anyway. Nothing wrong with a decent joke.
Yubaru
He deserved the prize because he was VOTED into office by the American people who were sick of Bush?
Read that again.
Yes, his winning was an amazing achievement, but worth of a Nobel PEACE prize?
I think too many people misunderstand what the Peace prize is supposed to be about. It certainly isn't about winning an election.
By yours and other people's logic, he should have won the prize even if he LOST.
bones
trump is gonna go on a Twitter rant about this little lunch date!
Davers
I don't really think he deserved a peace prize, due to his usage of drones that killed thousands of innocents.
But I think the reason he got it was because after the disaster that Bush created in the ME through his lies about WMDs, Obama went around and really tried to clean up the image of America around the world, and bring people together. That is much more peaceful than the antagonistic speech of the current administration.

Meet the old boss - not quite as bad as the new boss
Haruka
He won the peace prize due to his support of Israel in the middle east with all the hate going on there. He was best friends with Bibi and it made the world a safer place.
gokai_wo_maneku
Abe's first question: How on earth do I deal with this Trump thing!?!?
Toasted Heretic
This is the fake narrative put about by the alt-right in their revisionist attempts to confuse.
Dubya aggravated the ME but ISIS were already well past their embryonic form.

Convictions? He is an arrogant blowhard, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and not all that great of a businessman either. He plays on people's fears, particularly "white" folks, who will, within the next generation or so, will be the "minority" in America.
In the 2000 census in America "whites" comprised 75% of the population, in 2010, 63%,
This is what Trump is playing on, the fear that "whites" will no longer be on top.
This I gotta agree with.
