A worthwhile trip for both nations. If the rumors of a defense pact are real then that is excellent news.

Reports from Australia:-

Joe Biden's presidency will do little to change the prospect that Australia will be left "alone" to defend itself in the Asia Pacific, according to one expert.

Sam Roggeveen, director of international security at the Lowy Institute think tank, told Nine.com.au that China will largely dominate Mr Biden's foreign policy agenda.

But he - like US President Donald Trump - will lack the resources and national will to confront Beijing's growing influence in the Asia Pacific.

Japan and Australia backing each other up in the event of threats or hostilities is a fall back position for both if America is unable or reluctant to help, even though it has alliances with both nations.

Trade and tourism is important for both nations to contain economic fallout from covid. A closer relationship can only be a good thing and is in both countries interests.

I hope the visit is productive and that Suga is invited to visit Australia in the near future.

I'm guessing his quarantine won't be the same as normal people stuck in a hotel room with sh*t food.

Maybe he'll go off to Hawaii for a short vacation during his quarantine.

They were enemies 75 years ago. But today they are allies with a shared concern towards the 21st century fascists...China.

Dear Australia,

I like you but....

You need to keep your promises made.

When you buy Submarines, come to Japan like you said so from the beginning.

Japan has superior technology and could deliver equally good if not better then what France did.

One Australian administration said we will buy it from Japan. 100%

Next Morrison administration changed their mind! !

We need reliable allies who won't change their mind and view every few years towards Japan.

Australian citizens stranded in Japan due to the pandemic are being sidelined by the Morrison government and the state governments because of strict limits on intake imposed by the states, and bickering about who is responsible for repatriation of Australians who need to come home. My daughter in Tokyo has had five flights cancelled as the end date for her job, visa and apartment looms large. Can Mr. Morrison take some of his stranded Aussies home with him on the VIP plane?

Yeah, and if Japan and Australia do make a defense pact with each other, this will mean less work for the US to do in terms of defending them, especially from China. Not bashing either nation, in fact quite the contrary. This could be the beginning of a lot more independence from the US for both nations. Or at least it seems like it.

Dear Australia,

I like you but....

You need to keep your promises made.

No promise was made. An Australian Prime Minister indicated he wanted to buy them from Japan, "bypassing the tendering process" but no contract was signed.

When you buy Submarines, come to Japan like you said so from the beginning.

Japan has superior technology and could deliver equally good if not better then what France did.

I am sure France would say the same thing.

One Australian administration said we will buy it from Japan. 100%

One Prime Minister said he wanted to buy from Japan. He was replaced and the correct tender process was followed from that point. France won the bid, based on their latest Nuclear submarine and one thing considered by Australia was the possible future requirement for a Nuclear Submarine. The fact is the short fin Barracuda can be substituted for the nuclear version at any time with both submarines using the same components for the majority of the build being a factor. The other was building them in Australia which was not really on the table with the Japanese offer.

Do not let such insignificant issues interfere with a good relationship. Aussie subs no matter what model will help defend Japan if we sign a defense pact. I am sure Suga will not let it effect his decisions regarding Australia.
