Taiwan has been independent for 75 years. Why does China claim it now? Because foreign investment has made it one of the world's top power houses. China thinks they can get it all for free. Look at Hong Kong.

US is bound to defend Taiwan if China invades and this has nothing to do with Biden or Trump.

Unlike Ukraine, Taiwan is a semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse and most of the tech companies like Apple and Nvidia depend on TSMC to manufacture their chips. US will do anything and I mean anything to keep Taiwan from falling into Chinese hands.

@Pukey2

yet is regarded as a 'peaceful nation'.

She says this while living in Japan. LOL. The countries that have incorporated the US as a central partner of their national security policies, ie, Japan, Canada, Western Europe, S, Korea, Australia, NZ, etc. have nearly all been at peace for many, many years now. They are also the world's most prosperous and successful societies.

Those that chose non-alignment (India, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Rwanda, etc.) or the Eastern Bloc are mostly violent-filled hells on Earth.

The above article shows how important Taiwan is to global supply chains.

NOTHING lasts forever...

That’s the only correct part . The CCP is on its last legs.

We might see an elected President in China soon, elected by the people that is!!!

India is not a democracy,but a theocracy

7 ( +16 / -9 )

The time is right to put pressure on china, Xi is growing weaker by the day, the people are getting tired of the brutal dictatorship where the politicians live in luxury while the poor people suffer.

A bit more pressure and we might see the fall of communism in the next few years!

The White House must correct Biden officially, however the idea is what Biden wanted to convey to China. Politics are dancing. China must be warned by America at some point and so they have been. Good job President Biden.

HOORAHHHHH!!!

6 ( +9 / -3 )

I think USA will make japan fight China and sell us weapons.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Instead of threatening Taiwan with invasion and war, wouldn't it be marvelous if China tried to lure Taiwan into its fold by showing off its freedoms, democracy, prosperity, and happiness? One can dream.......

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Ulysses...

Time the world realizes US stands behind democracy and democracies.

Yes it does but ONLY if those democracies follow US policies. The US is equally happy to stand behind dictatorships... South Africa, Chile, Iran, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Indonesia, Argentina, Cambodia, Guatemala, Haiti, Panama... Ring any bells?

And of course lets not forget our greatest friends of democracy.... the Saudis and the other Gulf states.

Biden is trying to prevent a war in Asia caused by an invasion of Taiwan by China.

how is this possible when American policy is that Taiwan is part of China.

The United States does not recognize China's sovereignty over Taiwan. The US has acknowleged the "One China" on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, The US position is that Taiwan's status is not settled.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Going forward, its not looking good, for us here, in Asia. See what is happening in Europe now?? Its terrible for them. I can see similarities, things that may happen here, to what had Happened in Europe, things leading to its current situation. Dragging the conflict on and on and on .......

Defense and intervene do not mean troops on the ground/air. Eg, in Europe, see the case with no fly zone??

U.S. President Joe Biden said Monday that the U.S. would intervene militarily if China were to invade Taiwan

A statement given that this was NOT done in the Ukraine.

Of course not. Ukraine is not a NATO member and the US could take no unilateral action without the other NATO members agreement.

How would a NFZ or amphibious counter attack be mounted in the event of a Taiwan invasion?

It would be a conflict only resolved by the deploying of strategic weapons.

All weapons are strategic. If you meant "nuclear", the US isn't going to use them, and China isn't either.

US Nuclear inventory 5428. China's Nuclear inventory 350.

Never tell your antagonist what you are thinking, your potential future foreign policy.

It is smart and wise to allow as much political latitude to react to every eventually as events occur.

Well that's a doubled edged knife. The US and NATO never declared that they would intervene directly to defend Ukraine, which was not a NATO member. All while watching Russia prepare for invasion while denying it. Putin took that to mean he could invade and they would not directly intervene. Failure of the US to openly state that they would intervene militarily to protect Taiwan from a Chinese invasion could eauily become a green light for China to do so.

Biden is trying to prevent a war in Asia caused by an invasion of Taiwan by China.

how is this possible when American policy is that Taiwan is part of China.

China cant invade itself. so whats Biden trying to prevent? seems more like he is starting something. which is angering China for no reason putting Japan and Korea at risk.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

The United States does not recognize China's sovereignty over Taiwan.

neither do they claim it is not part of China.

The US has acknowleged the "One China" on both sides of the Taiwan Strait,

No then that would be the "Two China" policy- which doesnt exist.

There is one notable quality associated with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, don't frighten the horses.

silentium est aureum, silence is golden.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The key thing is that Biden mentioned “one China” several times if you paid attention, which was not reported much in US sources.

Biden is saying the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China are one.

There’s nothing here. Same old lip service to the must be tough on China crowd.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

America always provoking war, only fools will give American money.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Biden shouting out aloud as much as possible before his party gets slaughtered in the mid-term elections? Or is he mad he wasn't able to get a well-paid job for his son in Taiwan?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

China and Taiwan are not at war . . . Russia and Ukraine are at war . . . . Make Peace not War!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The answer could have been more thoughtful and diplomatic. Joe Biden is a seasoned politician.

Political science dictates lesson one, would the U.S. intervene militarily if China were to invade Taiwan?

Never ever answer such a question either yes or no!!!!

Ask Barak Obama.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Inclusion of Taiwan would have irked China.

They should have included Taiwan cause China is going to get irked anyway just from Biden's comment. And I don't see Taiwan being able to stop China even with all the support and suplly assistance in the world. It's going to have to be a direct conflict with the US and allied militaries that just might cause China to asess their potential losses stand down.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

China is like the abusive old boyfriend that can’t accept Taiwan wants nothing to do with them.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

I'm sure Kishida canl sleep well knowing that "Joe" has got his back.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

In the fullness of time and as long as the US and the west make it clear they would defend Taiwan against an unprovoked Chinese attack and Taiwan doesn't do anything precipitous like declare independence that would force China to attack, in other words the current status quo is maintained indefinitely I expect the government of Taiwan to outlast the CCP. Just like the old USSR the PRC looks so mighty and menacing but their government is rigid and brittle. Grievances accumulate and the CCP has no means for self reflection and correction. Rather it is all about looking strong and never admitting mistakes. That rigidity will be their downfall. China faces daunting problems with demographics and a looming massive water shortage as glaciers that feed important rivers disappear. The CCP is perhaps the government least able to deal with these problems effectively.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Pretty sure his handlers ..er I mean his White House staff have already corrected his statement.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Before messing up with the entire world, can the US fix the problems that they have in their country first? And who put in charge the US to decide for other countries before diplomacy?

Really, these constant threaten are making the global situation much worst.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

China is not dumb enough to provoke the US. We just have to control the Straits of Malacca and their economy will be strangled

OssanAmerica, I am selfish, I have my family here, I am frightened, I genuinely worry that this war in Ukraine is going to escalate as Ukraine freedom fighters hold there ground.

In my humble opinion this could not be the time for Joe Biden to make commitments that could bring the region into future conflict.

The yes and no could be tinged with more pragmatism.

Yes the Ukraine war will escalate. It will drag on long enough that Russia feels the cost of carrying on a quagmire fight is too costly and call an end to the invasion. The Ukranians will without doubt continue to fight to protect theit homeland, and who can blame them?

Biden is trying to prevent a war in Asia caused by an invasion of Taiwan by China. The lack of any comittment gacve Putin the go-ahead to invade Ukraine.

*The United States does not recognize China's sovereignty over Taiwan. *

Sorry but in the English language, if you say that A does not own B, then B is not part of A.

The US acknowledged China's position that Taiwan was part of China. The US did not recognize that Taiwan was part of China.

The US has acknowleged the "One China" on both sides of the Taiwan Strait,

No then that would be the "Two China" policy- which doesnt exist.

No, the US has said there is One China to Beijing, and said there is One China to Taipei. Only China has interpreted this to mean that somehow the US recognizes Taiwan as part of China. It doesn't.

China’s CCP will surely be asking how come Putin got a pass to invade Ukraine but they don’t get one to invade Taiwan?

But, at least he made the statement with respect to Taiwan.

Next, he needs to get his domestic economy back to normalcy again. Hope to see Biden turn his presidency around.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Yes sir, enough is enough of China and Russia threatening our way of life, NATO and the free world must stand firm together in the face of these THUGS and dictators who are working hard on changing our democracies and taking away our freedoms.

So comical, here’s Biden changing the news within 24 hours.

This morning I was complaining that the US wasn’t doing JS but here we are - Biden to the rescue.

It’s definitely the right course as the Taiwanese don’t deserve the hell that China has become.

Hats off to Biden!!!

so he speaks his mind.

and is immediately corrected by "the White House".

So who is the real president?

-6 ( +14 / -20 )

Here's a President who has the courage to stand up to bullies!!!

The previous administration weakened Ukraine and encouraged Russia to attack, you cannot do that with Taiwan. It is a real democracy and china is under a brutal dictatorship which is getting away with genocide.

India is not a democracy,but a theocracy

Huh!!!!

CCP brainwashing does destroy thinking power!

-8 ( +17 / -25 )

I think the Global community to concentrate on one war at a time, before provoking the next.

Joe Biden/US Government is correct to challenge the Government of China hostile intent to Taiwan and outrageous claims to East and South China Sea.

This need a stealthy approach. join arms with neighbours military, Action speak louder than words.

Keep the Government of China guesting to your next move.

Think the game of Bridge efficient thinking, your bidding objectives, trick indications. deductive reasoning.

The problem, is it is just a game of cards.

"...the burden to protect Taiwan..."

I wish Bidet would just shut up and take up the "burden" of protecting Americans and our 'friends' from the damaging effects of his big mouth and sabre rattling, pushing a narrative that has no basis in reality. China and Taiwan will solve their own problems and all the U.S. is doing and has done for 75 years is make the problems worse. Comparing Taiwan to Ukraine is the biggest hypocrisy given that the CHINESE now in control of Taiwan INVADED the islands in 1945 and brutally suppressed the native Taiwanese and installed a military dictatorship under the corrupt Chiang Kai Shek which, as we've seen for generation, are America's favorite sorts of people.

And the biggest LIE: "Biden acknowledged the U.S. economy has “problems” but said they were "less consequential than the rest of the world has.” As if the economy, which IS in trouble, were a bigger problem than the anger bred hatred, social dissolution, and blatant political (see: Corporate) corruption that seems to be rapidly overtaking the unity of the American People. It is not outside of possibility that Bidet could be one of the last, if not THE last, 'elected' President of the 'United' States. NOTHING lasts forever... And, in reality, the morale of the American military may not be much higher than what Western media claims for the Russians... 'volunteers' fight for ideals and 'idealism' is just about dead in America and the last military 'draft' was a complete disaster...'idealism' in China is at a peak. Bad time to pick a fight...

-9 ( +9 / -18 )

What commitment should that be? Successful military engagement like in Afghanistan? Or only press announcements and big mouth speeches? Or finally the two most used super weapons, tears and prayers? lol

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

Down with China

Go Russia

-12 ( +4 / -16 )

Its actually this simple. Biden big time gaffed again, on his own policy. Does he not even know what his own policy is? and why does someone else keep telling him what he is saying is wrong? who is this person who keeps correcting him?

Again.....

"Under the “one China” policy, the U.S. does not recognize Taiwan as a separate state from China. And under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the U.S. is committed to providing Taiwan with arms for its defense. The law does not commit the U.S. to sending troops to Taiwan to defend it.

Biden was asked at a CNN town hall last October whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan if it were attacked by China, and he said the U.S. would.

The White House quickly walked back Biden’s comments at the time, saying he was not announcing a policy change."

-14 ( +10 / -24 )

bungled this yet AGAIN!?

big bad talker guy says-

“Look, here’s the situation. We agree with the one China policy… but the idea that to be taken by force, just taken by force, is just not appropriate,” Biden continued. “It will dislocate the entire region and be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine.”

right after, White House says-

"The White House shortly after the press conference reiterated Biden’s comments that the U.S. position on Taiwan has not changed and it still abides by the one China policy."

-15 ( +15 / -30 )

I'm afraid this poster just doesn't understand anything. She doesn't realize (or admit?) that most of these nations were built on the blood, sweat and tears, not to mention the raw materials and treasures from their former colonies. Yes, they've been at peace DOMESTICALLY, but they've caused a lot of damage to other countries and continue to do so. She should get off her high horse and stop looking down on the developing world who are continually being taken advantage of. I don't need to explain how Africa was exploited, especially Congo. USA is constantly stirring up trouble in Thailand, Myanmar, but thankfully the deadly riots came to an end in Hong Kong. USA was responsible for the recent shenanigans in Pakistan, and through NATO has caused trouble in Ukraine and literally bombed Yugoslavia into bits.

-18 ( +4 / -22 )

All talk, just like Pelosi and her announcement of a visit to Taiwan. When it comes to an all-out war, he'll be glad he's far away and that it's Japan and Korea which are situated near Taiwan. I find it odd how USA has military bases in every corner of the world, is behind so many coups in other countries, arms foreign fighters with weapons, kills innocent children, makes up lies to start more wars, has a history of genocide and racism and yet is regarded as a 'peaceful nation'.

-19 ( +17 / -36 )

Another move by the US expansionist.

-19 ( +7 / -26 )

Joe Biden is a genuine democrat, a President that can stand up and state he is a man of peace.

Joe Biden should not commit to a future military confrontation, in the heat of a war in Ukraine with Putin's Russia.

President Biden is not just committing the US people to a open ended policy and strategy that could lead to a global war, but also the people of Japan.
