Perhaps chasing more stable bilateral ties stems from China gradually demonstrating itself as more of a regional security threat. Seems wise.

Nobody fears Japanese,so others feel.they can take advantage of their weaknesses and extort concessions from them

Scared either way

Economically Japan need China,

Dunno about Chinese media but my Japanese friends feel this is one issue they wish Japan stood differently on. They all love Taiwan and they feel Japan let Taiwan down in order to keep Chinese business.
kurisupisu
Massive investments by Japanese companies in China make Japan Inc billions of dollars!
Yet, At the same time China is made out to be a threat?
Is that not two faced?
BigP
Two faced!
Now that is the “kettle calling the pot black”.
WiseOneIn Kansai
Usual CCP propaganda!!
Simply ignore it.
Which country claims to be peaceful but militirizes the South China Seas?
Two- faced?? Time to look in the mirror China!!
Ricky Kaminski13
They just never get better do they. The kings of deception, corruption and hypocrisy schooling the world again.
Meiyouwenti
“Massive investments by Japanese companies in China make Japan Inc billions of dollars!”
The U.S., UK, France and Germany all made massive investments in China and made billions. They are all “two-faced” then.
"If the Japanese side remains obsessed with ulterior motives and misconceptions about China, and acts recklessly, the Chinese side will resolutely make necessary responses,"
What kind of responses, banning all Chinese tourists from visiting Japan? People in Kyoto would love it.
ian
China of course cannot trust Japan because Japan cannot make independent decisions regarding the 2 countries' relationship
YankeeX
China is Japan's biggest trade partner while America is Japan's security partner. Facing two ways so it's not too far off
Moonraker
I don't see how these are mutually exclusive. I may be "kind" to somebody but they may still be a threat to me. I may even seek to appease them through kindness.
OssanAmerica
What China fails too see is that while it is clearly a threat to Japan and the rest of the world, Japan is still giving China the opportunity to change it's ways and resolve issues through discussion for mutual benefit.
Unfortunately "mutual" and "benefit" does not exist togther in the CCP dictionary. This is no misconception.
Sh1mon M4sada
= LOSER!
The fact the CCP can't sprout their lies and propaganda officially can only mean one thing, two faced, forked tongue dictators. Better off not rubbing with them.
GuruMick
One aspect missing in this piece and the comments is the role the Chinese official media play in throwing "red meat " to their home audience.
China, being basically a military state, needs eternal enemies to focus the Chinese population's attention out ward, not inward.
History shows every country does this, even the wealthy, comparatively stable ones.{Trump and Meixco ,comes to mind }
I remember being in Argentina during the military junta period, the Argentina TV had Govt. adverts showing what a danger to Argentina sovereignty and land was Chile !!! LOL...forgot the Andes separating them did they
deanzaZZR
LOL. If Japan wants to choose the path of confrontation China will continue to forge ties with fast growing SE Asian countries and more broadly the Global South.
OssanAmerica
Too young to remember the real threat and fear of a US/USSR nuclear war. That's what drove the US Nixon administration to recognize the PROC over Taiwan. Japan, along with all other US allies followed. There was no way that Japan could have acted differently at the time.
The world helped China (PRC) get off it's economic knees, and once it had attained economic power they turned to military power. All during that time they lied to the world about a "Peaceful Rise". The West believed that raising China's livcing standards would lead to democracy. It didn't, tje CCP simply tightened it's authoritarian grip. We all got duped by this Two Faced Chinese Dictatorship.
Strangerland
China has been alienating the SE Asian countries as well.
Chabbawanga
China has a point, but Japan has no choice. They must obey their US masters. Same as the UK.
ian
Tell your Japanese friends to, like everyone here in JT does, boycott china and its products

*China threat.***.. LOL**
it is just a WAR propaganda...
Without China japan's economy is literally dead!!!
Kishida is just looking for a scapegoat to blame to hide his incompetence.
We love you China!!

Nope. With the exception of Bong Bong's PI everything is great and trending towards China.

He’s right though. There is definitely the two face phenomenon in Japan. The Japanese don’t think it is two face though but just a normal way of life.
Dango bong
Japan two-faced? Why, that preposterous! (wink)
Makaha
Like most governments, the CCP is the epitome of hypocrisy.
Strangerland
There is everywhere. People who tell the truth all the time in any society are rejected by society. What you call two-faced is more generally known as "being polite", something the Japanese are known for.
Chinese people are known for being so blunt as to be rude. They definitely do not have a reputation for being particularly polite.
quercetum
They got tired of the Uighur concentration camps where millions are slaughtered. You hardly hear about it now.
Then it’s China is going to invade Taiwan but they just can’t get China to bite. Can’t wait any longer.
Now it’s the Philippines. You have to give the US an A for effort. Really trying hard. Almost should be rewarded with war.
The next plan is Myanmar and the back door to China. Japan tried that but the R.O.C. held. Time for US to give Myanmar a go.
fallaffel
Or, these are all true, but the media found new stories to write about (like, uh, ongoing wars)?
But let me guess, the US controls the media, and made everything up. And apparently they stopped feeding the media their lies about each of these things for some unknown reason. It makes perfect sense.

To a great extend, they are right on the money, How else can you look at it.?

Every time any Chinese government officers or media outlet says China is a peaceful country and is not a threat to their neighbours please kindly explain the reason China is building a fleet of aircraft carriers. Modernsing your navy is fine but aircraft carriers are offensive purposes.
kokontozai
China has developed thanks to the financial and technical assistance of Japan and the United States. China has forgotten that debt.
rainyday
If Japan is two faced for being duplicitous then that would make China what? About seventeen faced or so?
quercetum
There is peace in Asia because of China and the US going at each other. Without the U.S., China would have its way. The same is true the other way around.
theFu
The CCP govt of China actively teaches Chinese citizens to hate Japanese. They teach it in schools. Taxi drivers in Beijing refuse to take Japanese riders.
If China wants better relations, they need to stop blaming the outside world for all their internal issues.
They need to stop faux attacks against Taiwan and fake blockades of that country.
They need to recognize international law where it applies. It is really funny when the Chinese military spokespeople claim "according to law" concerning international events outside China, which is covered, clearly, by international, accepted, law.
I don't know the answer that can work for all of China's neighbors. Would be nice if reducing trade with China were an option, but I don't see how that would be possible without tremendous hardship.
isabelle
There's no dichotomy here.
Japan wants ties with China, not the CCP. Just like most other countries.
Japan sees the CCP as the threat, not China. Just like most other countries.
And that's exactly right - because Japan is not a threat to anyone.
Unlike the CCP.
nukkuheddo
if anyone knows being two faced...
isabelle
No-one said "millions are slaughtered." They said, and continue to say, that millions are/have been imprisoned. Which is true.
Yes, you certainly do. That is, if you're not reading Xinhua or searching on Baidu.
There was a conference about it in New York just this week.
https://www.rfa.org/english/news/uyghur/interfaith-conference-04182024174516.html
Lately, a lot of the talk has been about how the CCP has transferred people from the concentration camps to forced labor placements. Though you will no doubt deny that too.
isabelle
Sorry, but no.
Countries want economic ties with China, but not CCP aggression. And that is reflected in the very survey you linked.
Aside from the rise in "popularity" of China (which is partly driven by lower support in Muslim-majority SE Asian countries due to the US' Israel policy), there is still a huge lack of trust. Japan, in contrast, is viewed very favorably.
....
https://thediplomat.com/2024/04/the-perception-game-how-are-china-and-the-us-viewed-in-southeast-asia/
With that in mind, it’s notable that 58.9 percent of survey participants still view Japan as the most trustworthy major power, followed by the U.S. (42.4 percent) and the EU (41.5 percent).
China, on the other hand, has a lower degree of confidence, with only 24.8 percent expressing trust in its government. This is partially because of worries that China’s strength in the military and economy could endanger regional interests and sovereignty.
According to the survey, some of the same factors that gave respondents confidence in China’s political and economic influence were also the ones that gave them cause for concern – such as its military might and economic might. For example, 45.5 percent of respondents expressed fear that China would use its strengths to threaten their national interests and sovereignty.
Japan turned out to be the most trustworthy country because it was seen as a responsible stakeholder that upholds and defends international law. The EU in the survey is viewed likewise. However, only 37 percent of respondents said they would choose the EU as a third partner to hedge against China and the United States, down from 43 percent last year.

Please kindly explain the reasons the USA has 11 aircraft carriers, the UK has 2, France has at least has one and India might finally have 1 that can sail out beyond the visual range of land.
shogun36
so business as usual?
nothing new to see here
quercetum
The US has military bases in Japan. No explanation needed. Over 750 military bases around the world. Why do you need an explanation? You can't see the other perspective? You can only see from one side? It's not a challenge really.
Ken
The US has has that strategically positioned to maintain peace and for defense purposes. As you can see China has a habit of taking from others and claiming it as their own. If there weren't US bases and assets in Asia then China would takeover Taiwan, Philippines and whatever other country they chose at that time.
What is a more legitamite excuse as to why China is building up military assets if not to be seen as a stronger threat?
deanzaZZR
平和 really? I'm guessing you are US military, America's finest!

They're just learning that NOW? Why did they think Japan always says they stand steadfastly behind the US and allies against Iran, then turns around and asks to be an exception to sanctions on countries that import Iranian oil? Why did they think Japan says they stand steadfastly with Ukraine but still have 85% or more of businesses in Russia that were there before the war, and are engaged in joint oil projects? Why did they think Japan says they want to lead the world in getting rid of nuclear weapons, only to refuse to sign a ban on them? Those are but a few examples.
David K Anderson
It certainly does seem unfair to call China a "regional security threat" when clearly it's a global security threat...
quercetum
I think it is because Japan’s actions do not match its words.
Alan Harrison
JT gives conflict ingvsignals with it:s headlines. One day Japan wants closer ties with China, and the next day Japan wants closer ties with it's neighbours to counter the Chinese threat. What exactly is China supposed to think?
Agent_Neo
When China seeks external enemies, it is only evidence that there is a major fire within. As Xi Jinping maintains his dictatorship and the power struggles and corruption within China progresses, he will create enemies outside and distract the Chinese people.
What Western countries, not just Japan, are promoting is a move away from China.
So far, each country has made profits, but China risks are increasing. Half of America's trade deficit is with China, so it is currently seen as an enemy of the United States, but it is not wrong to say that China was originally developed by the United States.
Whether there will be a conflict in Taiwan is up to Xi Jinping, but it is extremely dangerous to be optimistic that a conflict will not occur.
Strangerland
I don't expect China is so unbelievably stupid as to be determining foreign policy based on the headlines on Japan Today.
I don't even think they're stupid enough to consider that as an idea. Who would be that stupid? Who?
theFu
That Chinese messaging is very confusing. That's clear.
We can't tell what the Chinese govt actually wants, so different responses happen from different parts of the Japanese economy and people.
elephant200
The message of Chinese government is simple and clear: We don't trust you and have had your(Japan) hypocrisy enough, we don't believe your story !
elephant200
Honne & Tatemae , the Japanese social skills. That is their true feelings are different with their apparent showing.
Japan don't want any "Closer ties" with China just a parasitic taking advantages. Japanese racism were known very well by us, they are not our friends or neighbors. Better calling them: Backstabbers !
Strangerland
Who cares? It’s not like China is an ally or trusted by anyone.
theGrigio
Why doesn’t the CCP free its domestic media propaganda machine and let the local people’s oppressed voices be heard on matters of being two faced.
elephant200
@Strangerland:
Who cares? It’s not like China is an ally or trusted by anyone
Yes, don't exports to China as well, we doesn't cares your radioactive contaminated fishery products!
Paul
China can't a be a friend and an enemy at the same time! Japan needs to decide once and for all what China is!
elephant200
@Paul: You should know they are a vassal state, right? They have a boss shadowing them. The Japan of today is not the one in 1980s that can say no or making unique decision !
opheliajadefeldt
Japan is 'Fence Sitting' here, they have huge investments in China but they also buy silly amounts of weaponry from the USA..........Oh and its old stuff the USA does not need any more. So who is taking Japan for the proverbial ride.
