I don't think any electorate votes on a single issue. And I'm not certain if voter turnout provides a full picture of how people feel.

I'm sure you're right. However I think that if there was a lot of popular support for constitutional revision we'd have seen a lot more people turning out to vote for the parties offering it.

Japan should have a constitution written by The Japanese.

If the Japanese really cared who their constitution was written by the pro- revision parties would have got that super-majority.

From the way the media is talking about it and comments online you would think the constitutional change has already failed when in fact it hasn't even taken place.

Dont celebrate just yet you might be disappointed by the outcome.

Of course it's more complicated, what's your point? Do you believe you added most substance by spewing a few facts?

I just don't understand how any people in nation states are OK with occupation.

The truth of the matter was a little more complicated. The American War of Independence was actually the country's FIRST civil war waged by Americans of British descent and others against the authority of King George. Washington's forces would not have been able to prevail so quickly without the military aid of Europeans (especially, the French) who were the decisive factor in the defeat of the English Army at Yorktown.

And Abenomicks is actually the Abetross around the neck of the LDP whose hegemony will be whittled down by a thousand cuts over the coming decade as the Japanese become woke to the reality that these right-wing cuckoos only chirp out fake promises to the electorate while quietly feathering their own corrupt, cozy nests.

I'm glad he hasn't got the needed majority to revise the constitution. I'm not necessarily against changing the constitution, but doing it because you hold revisionist opinions and want to go back to the imperial days is absolutely the worst reason.

He had three years of super-majority power in both houses and did absolutely nothing with it. I guess he hasn't got the stomach to bring about any real change.

Constitution change does not have to be in haste. When a war breaks out, it will be instantly changed.

He is doing his best to put a good face on the fact that he more than likely is not going to get what he really wants, and that will bug the hell out of him for a long long time!

One of the most disappointing realities of ”democracy” in Japan is the lack of any semblance of a coherent opposition. So election after election resembles a form of political ground-hog day. Change is miniscule, meaningful reform or restructuring of the economy either fiscal monetary minimal.

October "Abenomics" will collide head on with the realities of a consumption tax hike, from 8 percent to 10 percent.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledges and promises, child care, pensions, social security, free eduction etc etc have spent revenue from this ta hike many times over.

Sorry to rain on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe victory parade. Constitutional change is not remotely a top priority.

Oh, gee, failed to change the constitution.

Guess Abe, heir to a war criminal clan, will just have to wait until next year for Pearl Harbor II.

When the USA (my country) leaves, I wonder how their pacifist constitution is going work for them. I love Japan but come'on... it's time to build your own military. Look at the UK, they are inept in thier response to Iran. Iran, they have an army.

He is not retiring it's just tummy trouble.

His mother must be so disappointed, almost as much as the 70% of non voters againt him. No one wants his dream of getting young Japanese killed. If he gets his way he will need a pay cut as what's left of working people won't be able to pay the taxes he needs to support himself and his cronies.
