I hope that the Emperor has a chance to actually enjoy his retirement! These politicians are making this harder than it needs to be!

"I wonder why this topic interests foreigners and taken up here. Most Japanese people are indifferent on this matter."
If JT excluded every topic the Japanese are indifferent to, we'd all be left to commenting on videos of people eating.

I have a proposal. Alright already, just let the gentleman abdicate, OK ?

hope it will not take too long for the process, he should enjoy his life. as to crown prince naruhito and his wife masako. congratulation! i like both of them very much. hope is not too harsh for them going forward at least with some freedom of their own.

Not if you know Japanese, not even close!
Must be new to JT. That is just an observation and not meant as anything negative. There are plenty of stories you will read here on JT and comments made aplenty, that Japanese themselves are either apathetic to, or in many cases have already read about, days, and sometimes weeks prior to it being posted here.
It is an opportunity for foreigners to get a small insight into Japanese politics and other subjects.

"Joko" reminds me of history class back in my high school haha

I hope he lives long enough to retire. I also suspect the experts hope he doesn't.

Never seen so much over nothing that 10 minutes and an yes would have solved a year ago. Hilarious that anything gets done at all

"Joko" is an abbreviation of "daijo tenno," a title that was given in the past to an abdicated emperor.
I really don't mean any disrespect for the royal family, but I would think a better title would be appropriate. Joko sounds a little like Joker.

Old people deciding the future of an old man. That's why it's going to take so long. Those aren't press in the background, they are AIDS ready to change a nappy at a moments notice.

So we are going to see an abdication ceremony next year, a ritual that has never been performed for last 200 years!

I think the topic is fascinating. The peculiar ways Japanese politicians are handling the issue is fascinating. Especially the ways in which they struggle to find a place for the old royal tradition within the framework of democracy is fascinating.
