Is the quote lost in translation?

"Masturbating" sounds like he is enjoying himself while something like "jerking off" sounds more like wasting time.

( eyes rolling)

Some people internationally look for something to be offended about to try to have a sense of moral superiority and self-righteousness.

Look no further than the Western world today.

Sent home for a bit of banter and humor? Unbelievable pettiness. Where is the sense of humor?

Japan will now expel the 2nd in command Korean diplomat in a tit-for-tat.

自慰行為 is used this way sometimes. You can't expect a translation to have all the same nuances. It's an overreaction to a petty comment. On the other hand, it's unprofessional for a diplomat to use that language about the country he is stationed in. But at this point, Moon is a lame duck. Nothing will happen until he is gone.

Definitely a No2 Diplomat

In a totalitarian world, telling the truth is a subversive act.

Makes one wonder how this guy was posted in South Korea in the first place.

Chinese diplomats are boastful and vindicative but they aren't unprofessional and dumb. Japanese diplomat here tries acting like the Chinese diplomats without the intelligence in his mind.

I dare this guy to try making this statement in China or the US.

Soma had told one of its reporters that Moon's diplomatic efforts regarding frayed bilateral relations amounted to "masturbating."

The bridgemakers! Both sides want nothing to do with making relations better. What a joke it must be when you know you are doing a job neither side wants to succeed. Must be good for morale! Tit for tat sandpit games.

He comes home shifted to the Japan Agricultural Ministry, gets a pay rise. Just normal day in the burdocks of responsibility.

What possessed Japan's No. 2 diplomat in South Korea, Hirohisa Soma vomit out such vulgarity is remarkable.

Diplomats have gone through years of restraint and experience knowing no good can come of such behavior.

Hirohisa Soma has handed South Korean President Moon Jae In, the means to politically skewer the J Government.

Unbecoming and rude.

What will the No 3 diplomat unleash?

Context?

Where, when and to whom would add to story.

Also, reported by.....

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Because it's a press release, I've simplified the translation too much.

He said he could hold a 15-minute meeting during President Moon's visit to Japan, and said that Japan's diplomatic attitude would not change, and said to President Moon, "He will be masturbating at home." said

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Whatever the context, Hirohisa Soma better judgment should have kicked in, halting any urge to use such a vulgarity at all.

South Korean President Moon Jae In holds office, I disagree with just about every utterance attributed to Moon Jae In.

To hand President Moon Jae In, an unnecessary diplomatic win over a coarse and frankly obnoxious outburst is childish and unforgivable.

Moon Jae-in once posted a DVD cover of a Japanese porno on Twitter before he became president.

oh i got it wrong! Sorry.

It's true until he said that Japan's attitude will not change and that a meeting with Prime Minister Suga will be given 15 minutes.

After that, his exact expression is:

Japan cannot afford to care about relations with Korea. President Moon is the only one who cares. President Moon is masturbating."

Sure...it's okay for a drunk construction worker, angry delivery man, or you to say but not a diplomat because their job is to be diplomatic. If you're still confused, look up the definition.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Quite a blunder.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

A poor choice of words diplomatically for sure. But in essence he is correct as Moon has caused more damage to SK-JPN relations than any of his predecessors. And he is out of office next year anyway.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

No, he is not correct

The function of a diplomat is not to cast personal opinions in a public place

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

An un-professional, smutty remark, very unbecoming of a diplomat. Perhaps it would wise to transfer him to another department.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

I don't agree with his statement but I do understand the frustration with South Korea and the Moon administration.

Mr. Moon is directly responsible for one of the worst Japan-S. Korea relations in many decades.

Mr. Moon is directly responsible for going back on the 2015 comfort woman deal.

Mr. Moon is directly responsible for the 1965 aggrement ending up in Korean court again and ruling in favor of Koreans.

How serious can you take this man? ?

How serious is his intentions for better relations? ? 0.0000%

He wants to win for S. Korea and humiliate Japan for the 57th time and apology and compensation paid for a 3rd time. Just so we can wake up tomorrow and the Korean say it's not Enough or Never Happened.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

The most likely explanation for the incident is obviously lack of abilities for the position he was in, but for some reason it still feels like something done completely on purpose to complicate things at the "worst" possible timing.

Simply unfit to be any level diplomat let alone the second highest! Japan definitely have much better and more capable people who can act as professional diplomats. If he would have used those same exact words against The US or China, he would have been sent home within minutes.

Total disrespect. When you're a diplomat dealing with the government officials of a foreign land, you just don't use that kind of lippy talk. It's even worse when he smarts off like that in the host country. No wonder they kicked him out.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Y'all wanna know Korea's political "strategy":

1-approval rate dropping? Then:

2-create issue with Japan, milk it to the max.

3-approval rate increasing.

Moon the goon hasn't been doing much more besides masturbating like this in his office. That diplomat has spoken truth, therefore he must be punished.
