Bilateral defense agreements can be very effective, but I worry what would happen if we get an American President who can be bought.

Turn Japan into a hornet’s nest. Top of the line jet fighters along with various types of missiles.

A reasonable meeting for long time allies. Lets hope it helps improve regional security.

Regular intergovernmental meetings between allies on defence are beneficial at the working level. Coordinating defence strategy and discussing concerns keeps both partners aware of what they are thinking and what the current concerns are.

It would be interesting if US at least be willing to share some of their more advance tech with us instead trying to sell us stuff they no longer want. Some F-22 would be nice even though export of that is banned. Or at least some more advance missile defense capability.

It's likely that we already did. Good thing he got voted out.

One is bilateral, the other is multilateral. They are different, not a matter of better or worse.

Japan's Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi , Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi plus U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin all support and follow China's order not to give diplomatic recognition to democratic Taiwan.
So the headline should be Japan, U.S. eye 2-plus-2 da-kine kowtowing to China talks in January.

It’s time to start changing Japan into a friggin’ hornet’s nest.

F-35 is front line equipment, best ground attack aircraft there is. Aegis is front line equipment. The US offered SPY-6 and SPY-7. They aren't even in service yet (SPY-6 is close though). The US offered JASSM and LRASM, their best air launched cruise missiles and Tomahawk too. Japan only took JASSM but the offer was there. Japan builds MH-60s which are front line ASW helicopters still being manufactured for the US Navy. How much more advanced do you want?
F-22 has a fatal flaw. It is as costly per hour to fly as a B-52. It's 50% more expensive per hour than an F-15 and about six times as expensive per hour than an F-16. When your flying budget is more or less fixed year by year, the more costly each flight hour is the less hours you can fly. It was to the point with the F-22 where flying it if they bought as many as originally planned was starting to cost more than the Air Force had available for flying all of its aircraft. That is why the program was cut. Cost per flight hour might kill the F-35 too, especially if NGAD enters production soon.
