Or instead stay on the road to oblivion with the occupiers. China's real economy is already larger than the real economies of USA and Japan combined and China's economy, real or US$ based, is growing 3 or 4 times faster.

The GDP of China has not exceeded that of the US and it's economic growth rate has declined to the point where China's GDP will likely never exceed that of the US.

Japan stone age cybersecurity will be the weak link. Do not leave any important information on Japanese servers or facilities. If the defense project is successful then China and its proxy NK will have no leverage.

What Japan is considering, is a not a ‘counter strike capability’ but a first strike capability.

I believe the research is aimed at shooting down, i.e countering, Chinese or Russian hypersonic weapons aimed at Japan, not to develop missiles to shoot back at them. I could be wrong but that is how I understood the article.

However the USA has never officially confirmed that defense of the senkaku islands are coverd in the article 5 security agreement between Japan and the USA.

Absolutely false statement.

"Biden affirms security treaty applies to Senkaku Islands in Suga call"

https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/International-relations/Indo-Pacific/Biden-affirms-security-treaty-applies-to-Senkaku-Islands-in-Suga-call

" The U.S. and Japanese governments have begun talks on conducting large-scale joint drills to increase their capability to protect the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, Nikkei has learned.

Under the plan, Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces would join the U.S. Marines and Air Force in an exercise to defend the Japanese-administered Senkakus, which are claimed by China as Diaoyu."

The Senkaku Islands are Japanese territory.

Since ancient times!

Biden affirms security treaty applies to senkaku

Iam sorry but thats not true !

Thats why regardless of what Biden said - Japan has never received official confirmation that the USA is committed to defending senkaku.

Never since the agreement of article 5 .

You've been misled !

Please read and study a subject before commenting and making utterly erroneous statements for all to see.

"U.S. Administrations going back at least to the Nixon Administration have stated that the United States takes no position on the question of who has sovereignty over the Senkakus. It also has been U.S. policy since 1972, however, that the 1960 US-Japan Security Treaty covers the islands. Article 5 of the treaty states that the United States is committed to “meet the common danger” of an armed attack on “the territories under the Administration of Japan."

"Most prominently, in April 2014, President Obama reiterated that Article 5 of the US-Japan Security Treaty covers the islands and that “we do not believe that [the Senkakus’ status] ... should be subject to change unilaterally.” This is believed to be the first time a U.S. President publicly stated the U.S. position on the dispute. The Trump and Biden Administrations reiterated the Obama-era language. "

"Shortly after Donald Trump assumed office in 2017, he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe issued a statement in which the two leaders “affirmed that Article V of the US-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security covers the Senkaku Islands.

President Biden has also further affirmed the US position on that Article V covers the Senkakus.

@Rodney NO there is a price to pay for security!!!

So we pay and become a target?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@Rodney Tell me you know a software developer or a company that builds something that is controlled by SW and they say his/her software is fault free

And in the west, nothing every gets done.

Stop bringing up the worlds most expensive weapon, the F-35. We all know they have 210 faults and only 110 have been fixed

What's the use then of deploying Ospreys to Okinawa purported to transport ground troops from one place to another

If you need to move a land force in a big hurry Ospreys are at least twice as fast and have greater range than any helicopter. Plus Ospreys can be refueled in flight from Marine KC-130s, further extending their range.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

There will be no need to move ground troops to the scene of conflict, hence no need for Ospreys to come into play and their base in a contingency like this. Anti-Access operations will do all the job, I assume.

You assume wrong. If the Chinese start landing troops on small Japanese islands along the Ryukyus you need JGSDF and US Marines to land and fight them on land. Anti-Access / Anti-Denial A2AD for short refers to use of air power and missiles to prevent the entry of an enemy into nearby waters. Such weapons are useful after a war starts to keep US and allied forces from attacking Chinese bases on the mainland. But that is only useful after a war starts. The war doesn't start until the Chinese attack. Only then you can shoot back but by then you will have the PLA landing on your beaches. However if your intel is good and you see the Chinese coming and have some warning you can reinforce rapidly using aircraft like the Osprey, and you can run them off your beach with things like HIMARS.

But where will the active elements of the Marines be who the Ospreys are to transport? They will be on Guam, deployed there from Okinawa, in consonant with the Marines' new strategy.

Moving their air base from Iwakuni to Camp Schwab does not mean there will no longer be ground troops on Okinawa.  They will certainly be there still. You will still have an amphibious group there deployed from Camp Pendleton as well.

Btw, the Marines new way of fighting is to operate in coordination with allied naval forces to defeat enemy ships. The Marines do not want to be just another army. They are going to use really small units from smaller ships, land on a small island and set up anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles in anticipation of a naval action. The Navy and Marines together sink enemy shipping. When the battle is over they quickly withdraw. Or they can set up to block a strait with anti-ship missiles so an enemy force cannot pass through that strait. All of this requires a lot of mobility. The Marines have already disposed of all of their big tanks and much of their tube artillery and are replacing these with a selection of missiles like the Norwegian JSM and probably Tomahawk.

Desert Tortoise,

You assume wrong. If the Chinese start landing troops on small Japanese islands along the Ryukyus you need JGSDF and US Marines to land and fight them on land.

According to a bilateral agreement, it is JSDF that has primary responsibility to deal with a contingency like what you are talking about. So, what's the use of building an Osprey base in Henoko?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Build a giant concrete dome 100 meters thick over Japan. That ought to do it.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Jun Kitamura, a military analyst, says in an essay contributed to JB Press: 9/15/2022 that the Marines are undergoing realignment themselves to deal with a changing security situation, thus mixing its ground force and air wing to form an Anti-Access squadron, in which ground-based Marines will prevent hostile naval and air forces from approaching the territory by targeting them with cutting-edge projectiles such as HIMARS rockets.

HIMARS was used in recent Japan-U.S. joint military exercises and the U.S. wants the system to remain where it was first employed for joint exercises, that is, in JSDF Amami Camp. It seems the U.S. wants to deploy HIMARS to all JSDF bases now being planted on major islands in the archipelago.

What's the use then of deploying Ospreys to Okinawa purported to transport ground troops from one place to another and constructing their air base at Henoko, squandering so much money and energy, destroying mother nature to the nail?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Chairman LMAO,

If you need to move a land force in a big hurry Ospreys are at least twice as fast and have greater range than any helicopter. Plus Ospreys can be refueled in flight from Marine KC-130s, further extending their range.

There will be no need to move ground troops to the scene of conflict, hence no need for Ospreys to come into play and their base in a contingency like this. Anti-Access operations will do all the job, I assume.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Chairman LMAO,, again:

Ospreys may have some advantages over conventional helicopters. They may fly twice as fast as ordinary helicopters. They may also be refueled in the midair.

But where will the active elements of the Marines be who the Ospreys are to transport? They will be on Guam, deployed there from Okinawa, in consonant with the Marines' new strategy.

The substantive amount of the cost for their transfer is shouldered by Japan as bilaterally agreed to. Do you think such deployment of troops and weapons contribute to deterrence and so the construction of Futenma's replacement in Henoko is absolutely necessary?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Cool.

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

Advanced weapons worked in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. Advanced weapons are working for the Russians in Ukraine. Let's get more advanced weapons at great expense or we won't be safe.

No, no, no. Let's not. They don't work. You don't win hearts and minds by dropping bombs on people as we should have learnt.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Wait a moment.

Is US involved in trying to make money on weapons and military equipment?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It’s an all island country, so a potential aggressor sooner or later has to come nearer and put boots on the ground if wanting to occupy something or whatever else. And that’s the key point here and it’s not even so very much expensive or requiring newest sophisticated technologies. A weapon for every household, locked in peaceful times, unlocked in case of a conflict, that’s the solution. Could also be stored at local community centers etc. if there’s no trust to equip civilians all the time. Nothing against the police or JSDF ground defense, but they are of course not sufficient to effectively withstand any of the potential neighboring occupiers. US have a ruling to defend own ground or house, Swiss has a defense system something similar to what I wrote about and the question is, why such an easy to implement and low cost solution is not even considered, but instead some illusions are preferred, like space defense, own development of hypersonic systems or preemptive first strikes and all that, which is maximum expensive and worth nothing.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Joint research. Wow! That is very wild.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Politicians, diplomats, people who actually represent their people need to get out, talk, make plans, find ways we can get along. War, "defence," weapons and counterweapons do not create peace.

Haven't we proved that by now?

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

So we pay and become a target?

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

And in the west, nothing every gets done.

Stop bringing up the worlds most expensive weapon, the F-35. We all know they have 210 faults and only 110 have been fixed

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Stay friends with our closest neighbour, the biggest economy in the world and our best trading partner. Ditch the occupiers who only cause trouble wherever they go.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

What Japan is considering, is a not a ‘counter strike capability’ but a first strike capability.

Japan, US eye joint research to counter hypersonic weapons:

Does that imply that the west is already behind time in making the hypersonic missiles?

Are US & Japan desperately trying to catch up with China & Russia, hoping to supersede the latter in the shortest possible time..?

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

eye joint research to counter hypersonic weapons

Even how things work in Japan still below subsonic, everything still need hanko to be approved.

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

just propaganda to justify more destruction weapons.

And to justify more money from taxpayers.

A few Japanese cont will benefit from it

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Japan is safe and will be protected because of her support to Israel.

Japan shouldn’t worry about China and Russia.

China is on the brink of collapse because of its huge debt and economic woes.

Russia will be destroyed when she invades Israel for a spoil.

what Japan should be worry about is the clout of the one world governance and will trample on Japan’s rights and liberties.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

Japan would be better off kicking out the occupiers and promising to be neutral so it can go about trading and having a normal relationship with by far it's largest trading partner, which is quickly pulling further away from its nearest rivals. And also the country from where Japan can get almost all the vital commodities it needs along with a huge potential market for Japanese consumer goods.

Or instead stay on the road to oblivion with the occupiers. China's real economy is already larger than the real economies of USA and Japan combined and China's economy, real or US$ based, is growing 3 or 4 times faster.

-10 ( +10 / -20 )

basically, I translate: Japan needs to pay more money to US for its security.

only politicians want WAR with CHINA, normal people want peace and do not hate china.

just propaganda to justify more destruction weapons.
