I recommend DPRK China military drills.

In my post above, "US" somehow dropped out. The last line in the first paragraph should read, "The US seems to have inherited the bluster and "send a gun boat" attitude of the late and unlamented British Empire."
BertieWooster
The huge expense and effort required to do these "drills" is a total and complete waste. The money and effort could be put to far better use. And with peace negotiations just around the corner, it would have been diplomatic to have postponed them for another time. The seems to have inherited the bluster and "send a gun boat" attitude of the late and unlamented British Empire.
Beware.
Pride goes before a fall.

Well the South Koreans don't think it's stupid to carry out routine exercises that have been carried out for years. And they have the most rear end on the line in all this. Besides, North Korea had previously indicated that they weren't going to make an issue of US/SK exercises, a position that they are backtracking on already.
North Korea is seeking to achieve it's terms before the meeting has even take place. And so many of you are falling for it.

Of course these exercises are important from both the military-readiness and deterrence standpoints. But...
It was stupid and arrogant to hold them right before peace talks. It's the kind of stupidity and arrogance I would expect from Trump and his newly appointed Secretary of War (I mean "State"). But, SK should have injected a little sense into the situation, and requested postponement until after the meeting.

The funding, logistics, and planning that go into a training exercise would make it highly impossible to be "pushed through." Government approval of funding for things is as terrible as waiting at the DMV or your local Ward Office... About the only thing the "hawks" did was not try to cancel the exercise that "North Korea had earlier said it would allow them to go ahead" (source http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-44134910). Which for the Republic of Korea and US is completely understandable because there has not been a concrete guarantee and a history of broken promises from the DPRK.
The only one to blame is here is the DPRK and people have bene naïve to think anything was going to change.. history proves ithttps://www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/dprkchron
Ganbare Japan!
While I am confident Kim-san has “turned the corner” for the new North Korea, and am eager to watch the Summits, with Trump and PM Abe, drill still must proceed. USA has obligated to protect Japan. Ready for War. Prepared for Peace.
PM Abe and Vice PM Aso will be furious if drills to defend Japan are cancelled.

Funny how the typical anti-Japan crowd always seems to blame everything on Japan and act condescending towards them, when these drills are actually between the US and South Korea. And as mentioned it's North Korea that was lobbing multiple missiles towards Japan. Japan has every right to express their concerns and opinions on all matters North Korean. This is a NK regime with a history of duplicity in regards to negotiations and deals.

Marcelito,
My point too. Though it wasn't very well received.
juminRhee
Was watching Arirang TV and nearly every programme was about possible peace and rainbows with north Korea. Wonder if the programmes have been cancelled.

OMG, every year this exercise is conducted and every year NK makes virtually the same comments/ rhetoric — to many ney sayers are reading to much into this. We. need to concentrate on the July-in-Singapore meeting and it’s possible end to the Korean Action and the real possibility of the Reunification of the Korean peninsula and the verifiable end to the north’s dismantling and subsequent termination of all its Nuclear weapons and deleivery systems. In the intern hopefully the return of Japanese Abductives being returned.

There are a few end-goals.
NK merged under a SK controlled country. No more NK at all.
Freedoms for the former NK people.
No nukes in the joined Korea state
Happy families reunited.
Less stress in the region.
Prosperous country, businesses, govt.
More humans with better lives able to have all the toys that modern countries have, purchased from Korean, Japanese, Chinese and American companies.Peter14
You want to reassure a timid people that they will be safe if they give up Nuclear weapons, then you hold military exercises close by before you achieve your goal. Not a bright move. NK has been making positive moves towards your goal and a little intelligent behavior on your part would seem the logical thing to do.
They need to feel they are safe, not threatened. Get the peace treaty wrapped up and remove their nukes. Help them rejoin the international community and begin to be open and prosperous. Then you wont need drills so often and they could be held away from the Korean peninsula.
BertieWooster
Hideous timing.
Or is it per plan?

Like I said before, abes praying to every concievable deity that this fails.

Need to be able to read the room as it were. De-escalate

Yes. That's what training exercises are. Rehearsal for actual combat. It's like going to the gym. You don't tell a heavyweight boxing champ not to go to the gym. Militaries have to train. These exercises are necessary to ensure interoperational capability between both forces and are indispensable. North Korea is just going to have to live with that.

Post war Japan has perfected to a fine art how to capitalise on other world disputes while claiming to be victim of aggression. This may be coming to an end.

A senior Japanese official said Japan defends U.S.-S Korea military drills, but not all people in Japan. How can a country do summit of Peace Treaty when the enemy is doing threatening military exercise, and how foolish is the other side not to refrain doing that when the day is coming soon? And why Japan in this?
Netgrump
Yep, someone is missing something and should sit down and... :)
Netgrump
Only the commenter seems overjoyed as the Japanese are just sceptical. Their scepticism is fuelled by the latest news from the 'NK bogeyman'
It's good that some have no right to vote :)
Joe Yan
It is business of Japan when north korea starts shooting missiles over the japanese islands.
papigiulio
Unless im missing something I don't understand why this is any business of Japan. Japan is not involved in the drills right? Sit down and shut your yap.
Civitas Sine Suffragio
The Japanese are overjoyed at this, they want this whole process stopped and the NK bogeyman intact.
Matt Hartwell
Exercise should never of happened. Designed to hone pilot skills they said. So what was the purpose of all the other exercises? A joy ride? Really can't see why it was necessary and the timing is dumb.
nandakandamanda
Just been reading that the US has decided to cancel the B52 flights which were originally scheduled for this exercise.
