South Korea threatened to take Japan to the WTO.

As a matter of fact, EU has never even included South Korea in "white list" countries so far. South Korea should referral EU to the WTO.

Looks as if a Korean researcher has testifying before the UN symposium that the whole forced laborer inequality thing is a lie.

https://www.sankei.com/politics/news/190701/plt1907010046-n1.html

I wonder what else they know is actually a lie.

The beginnings of export embargo in all but name, courtesy politically of the foolish ineptitude of President Moon Jae-in.

An import embargo could follow with punitive currency economic financial restrictions. Finally strategic diplomatic business protection modelling of Japan's national business interests in South Korea. This tactic would require a change in law.

All the resultant behaviour of the present South Korean Government, that fails to respect a Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea signed June 22, 1965. How far the political/diplomatic relationship deteriorates is dependent on President Moon Jae-in.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

South Korea never thought that Japan would retaliate and carried out a number of hostile acts (such as fire-control radar irradiation).

On the "forced laborer" issue that was completely resolved under the 1965 Japan-ROK Basic Treaty (in fact, the Korean plaintiffs were not forced laborers. they applied for Japanese companies during the wartime), Korean supreme court ordered the Japanese side to compensate.

The Korean government keeps ignoring Japan seeking correction of the Korean situation where international law has been violated and now it is natural for Japan to remove South Korea from the white nations( formed with 27 security friendly countries) which are given preferential treatments for trade.

Japan will cancel the preferential treatments but still treat South Korea as one of the general countries.

Claiming as if Japan carries out economic sanctions against the WTO agreement is totally Korean propaganda.

decided to take South Korea off the White list

Countries removed from the whitelist will attempt to import military products (substances). At this time, the the name of the substance to be traded, amount, country, and receiving company (individual) of the substance to be traded are strictly checked. The reason is that it can not be selling something through illegal channels to third countries such as North Korea and Iran etc. It is a reason that the government is panic. South Korea who thinks that it is not known is really stupid.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Literally all Korean media still making an even bigger fuss about this. And SK government invests 1 trillion won to develop domestic supply chain for those items? Now? Perhaps Samit can explain better.

What's the big deal? Right? Samit?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Hmm... I don't see why this is an issue.

Japan decided to list SK in their white list and treat them special from 2004. But now decided to take SK off the list and treat them the same as others, since Japan can no longer trust them as they used to.

Seems very simple and straightforward.

This tit for tat retaliation - and that is what it really is - is simply a measure to save face and put on a good show for populism as the upper house eleections near.

The LDP have taken a hit recently re scandals, pensions etc and need a shot-in-the-arm to convince the public that they are tough and strong and have the ordinary Taros & Sachikos interests at heart - cough, cough.

Especially so because they lost their #1 attack point - North Korea, when the Great Wise One from afar (the countries favorite buddy) warmed up chummy chummy like to the Evil One dashing hopes of pre-election vitriol to woo the masses.

So S.K. has become the attack focus - and from a security aspect of all things???

Suga - this is not about trade, it's about security - LOL. Just after the G-20 free trade blah, blah, blah.

No - this is all about image and votes.

@Samit Basu

You said " South Korea did not move in this turmoil". If you followed your instructions, I would have lost my profit. Why is the Nikkei rising and KOSPI falling? If the Japanese government does not allow export, do you really think that export to Korea is possible? Please accept reality from the front.

@showchinmono

You don't invest in the country which creditworthiness is below your measure.

Indeed, Korea shouldn't invest in Japan, while Japanese suppliers are eager to flee Japan and open factories in Korea to survive and escape from Abe san.

Sovereign credit ratings( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_credit_rating )

Standard & Poor's

Korea : AA

Japan : A+

Fitch

Korea : AA-

Japan : A

Moody's

Korea : Aa2

Japan : A1

.

SK's sovereign risk is now much higher for Japan. as simple as that.

The reality is exactly the opposite of Japanese rightwinger's fantasy.

Yeah Yeah. I would exchange Japanese Yen for Pula and rather invest into Republic of Botswana

Angry Response from Japanese suppliers.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2019/07/02/business/export-controls-south-korea-worry-japanese-makers-semiconductor-materials

Export controls on South Korea worry Japanese makers of semiconductor materials

Japanese manufacturers of three kinds of semiconductor materials that will soon face export restrictions to South Korea have reacted to the news with surprise, concern and disappointment

A public relations official at Tokyo Ohka Kogyo expressed concern over the government’s move.

“We’re hugely disappointed,” the official said, noting that the decision was announced just after news over the weekend that U.S. restrictions on trade with China’s Huawei Technologies Co. may be relaxed, which somewhat eased Tokyo Ohka Kogyo’s concerns over the impact on its supply chain.

However, the official said that Tokyo’s latest move will have a “limited impact” on the company, since its production volume of EUV resists is relatively low and the company has a production facility in South Korea.

Turns out Abe san specifically targeted Samsung's 7 nm EUV line, the most advanced fab line in the world as only the EUV Photoresist came under export control, not the Photoresist for other older processes for DRAM and NAND.

Thankfully, Samsung was being supplied from Tokyo Ohka Kogyo's Korean plant and will continue to get its supply unrestricted.

In the future, Japanese suppliers will be required to have a production facility in Korea if they wished to win contract.

How easily can Abe manipulate Japanese patriotic voters? Abe wants to mimic and learn from Trump. Wish him a landslide victory, and good luck.

"Showing a strong stance toward South Korea could boost public support for the government," said Hidehiko Mukoyama, Korea analyst at Japan Research Institute in Tokyo. Mukoyama compared the move to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi going on the offensive against Pakistan earlier this year, a move that was widely seen as fanning patriotic fervor and helping him win the subsequent general election.

Economic aid is what SK paid for Japan after the disasters in March, 2011. The second biggest payment after Taiwan. Maybe you should pay them back if you hate them so much. No? Why not? What an ungrateful person you are.

You have bent the conversation, pulling out the words that Tinawatanabe said. We can always pay back, please pay the 30 billion yen money that Japan has already renewed at the Japan-Korea World Cup. South Korea says it has supported about 40 billion to 90 billion yen to Japan, but it is a lie. It is 3.2 billion yen. Please do not put a lie on Wikipedia. We received a very warm message saying "We will celebrate Japan's earthquake disaster" in a soccer game with Sourh Korea. It's rude. thank you.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

There's another special treatment Japan should abolish. Special permanent residency right should be deprived of Korean residents., treat them all the same as others to be fair for all foreigners in Japan. And this does not violate 1965 treaty at all either, has nothing to do with "free trade".

8 ( +13 / -5 )

You don't invest in the country which creditworthiness is below your measure. Likewise you exclude the country which trustworthiness is below your measure from the list eligible for special treatment, at Japan's complete sole discretion. This has got nothing to do with WTO rules.

SK's sovereign risk is now much higher for Japan. as simple as that.

Retaliation? Laughable. There should be more to come, if for retaliating.

But tell us, how is Japan the victim again, and again, and again? You know full well Japan forced women into sexual slavery, and as a woman... wow... you must really have no shame.

Keep repeating the same phrase like broken record is typical way to brainwash people in the compound and often employed by Korean activists. No wonder you use the same approach.

The sum total of Japan’s compensation to South Korea was $300 million in grants and $500 million in nominal and interest free loans. Reparations paid by Germany are hundreds of times greater in absolute terms. Japan’s reparation payments were even designed with Japan’s own economic needs foremost in mind. What Germany paid staggers the imagination. One figure alone, that of German cash compensation to Jewish individuals, is a multiple of what Japan ever deigned to pay Korea for an occupation that lasted from 1910-45.

Japan did not fight war against South Korea. Japan ruling of the peninsula is completely different from and not even to be compared to, Holocaust. Period.

Please do not distort the truth. It is not true that the Japanese army was slaughtering young women in Korea as sex slaves in the name of military comfort women. It is true that there was a woman who prostituted against a soldier who was called a comfort woman. There is no fact that the country of Japan abducted young women and tortured or raped like slaves. South Korea has demanded money from the Japanese government over and over again and again, "compensate for the military comfort women.". Think carefully, why can only women who are called "comfort women" find only Koreans? Don't you think it's funny?

11 ( +15 / -4 )

Simply, it is a kamikaze attack ordered by Abe

(for instigating anti-Korean mood for the upcoming upper house election).

It is seemingly marvelous at first, but not new at all that Japaneses can accept the idea of confiscation of private-sector companies by the government for suicidal attack on a foreign country.

Japan-Korea Reparations Agreement Article I

1 Japan shall supply the Republic of Korea with:

(a) Products of Japan and the services of Japanese people, free of charge, the total value of which will be so much in yen as shall be equivalent to three hundred million United States dollars ($300,000,000).

(b) Long-term and low-interest loans up to so much in yen as shall be equivalent to two hundred million United States dollars ($200,000,000), which will be covered by procuring the products of Japan and the services of Japanese people necessary for implementing the enterprises to be decided upon.

German Reparations:

At the beginning of the occupation, the Allies commenced to dismantle the remnants of German industries. Plants and machinery were dismantled; the railroad system deconstructed and everything transported to the Allies. The German merchant fleet and all other ships were handed over. Foreign stocks of about 2.5 billion dollars were confiscated. The remaining German industries had to give up a share of their production to the Allies. Large shipments of steel, coal, but also other industrial production were seized and transported out of the country. Later the Western Allies softened their stance in favour of the Marshall Plan, while Eastern Germany continued to deliver industrial goods and raw materials to the Soviet Union until 1953. The Allies confiscated large amounts of German patents, copyrights and trademarks worth about 10 billion dollars. Millions of Germans were pressed into forced labour for several years to work for the Allies in camps, mining, harvesting or industry. Germany had to shoulder the cost of the Allied occupation by itself; amounting to several billion dollars. Germany concluded a variety of treaties with Western and Eastern countries as well as the Jewish Claims Conference and the World Jewish Congress to compensate the victims of the Holocaust. Until 2005 about 63 billion euros have been paid to individuals. Additional payments by German companies which exploited forced workers have been made.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

LOL. Nice move by Shinzo Abe. Somehow you can rape, murder, and abduct millions of people and then claim you already apologized, and paid for crimes you claim you didn't commit all at the same time.

-9 ( +4 / -13 )

Where do you come up with this nonsense? Facts, please, and show us links to your proof.

Japan provided South Korea with $300 million grant in economic aid and $200 million in loans together with $300 million in loans for private trust, a total of $800 million. This amount was 2.3 times of SK's national budget at that time and nearly half of foreign ccy reserve of Japan at that time.

And this is common sense.

South Korea is not as petty as Japan when it comes to sports.

Don’t kid yourself Lol. South Korea is the pettiest and dirtiest when it comes to sports.

Speaking of WC2002, Japan was the lowest number of fouls 28 times of all teams in the group league whereas SK was 64 fouls, the worst of all. SK was awfully disgraced sports, World Cup and the entire world knows that. World well-known legendary players like Cruiff, Platini, Netzer, Lineker, Pixy, Owen, Del piero, every others spit out their angers on South Korea.

No surprise you're denying Japanese atrocities again. But tell us, how is Japan the victim again, and again, and again? You know full well Japan forced women into sexual slavery, and as a woman... wow... you must really have no shame.

You obviously crossing the line. Well,  No surprise as you have nothing else but resort to sexually harassing other poster. How miserable you are.

Japan's economic aid was so big that it took 10 years for Japan to finish paying because Japan did not have such a big money. It was about 3 times SK's national budget.

Do you have the receipt?

"SK only announced it but I don't think it has been paid yet."

How utterly disgusting to the memory of the victims and people still suffering. You will stoop to no lows, I see. They paid plenty, and offered aid in direct medical and military aid as well. Would you have refused it knowing it was from South Korea just out of spite? Wouldn't change the fact you accepted it. Sorry, tina.

This bio-lateral agreement seems to be mentioned in many forms. Promise, Treaty, Agreement, Bilateral Agreement, Is there actually a written copy of this, signed (or stamped wit a hanko or fingerprint) by both parties?

That's what Japanese rightwingers would wish for but Koreans are not interested in fulfilling.

What Koreans would boycott would be buying Lexus and travelling to Japan(Koreans made up 25% of foreign tourists to Japan).

The funniest part about all this is watching Abe put his nose up Trump's butt while he shakes Kim's hand. Ouch! Abe's soon going to have to bend over for Kim to further settle up Trump's backside. And oh, how much that must hurt the likes to tinawatabe and showchinmono.

Ganbare Japan: "I have a feeling Japan-hating SK will boycott the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. "

South Korea is not as petty as Japan when it comes to sports. When, as Jimizo pointed out, SK progressed in the WC when Japan failed, literally all television sets were shut off in Japan, and I know more than a few Japanese that prayed ANY team that played SK lost, much to their chagrin when Spain and others fell, and SK made it further than any Japanese team had done in history, and likely ever will.

"but if they boycott due to spite, then they will miss out on the greatest show on earth."

They haven't boycotted anything, bud. Sounds like wishful thinking and bitterness. You probably want them to boycott so Japan might stand a few more medal chances where SK will most certainly beat them.

-12 ( +4 / -16 )

I have a feeling Japan-hating SK will boycott the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan welcomes everyone with world-famous hospitality, but if they boycott due to spite, then they will miss out on the greatest show on earth

I can’t see that, sport. I was here for the 2002 Japan/S Korea World Cup. I know Australia didn’t qualify, but it was a good tournament.

I don’t think the relationship between Japan and Korea has grown markedly worse since then.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

I love how he says this but then says it's "not retaliatory" in the same breath. Perhaps Japan shouldn't rape and murder it's neighbors if it doesn't want to face the consequences at some point in time. But I guess it's easier to just play the victim and blame the actual victims.

What promise are you referring to, Showchimono?

Why are you asking?

3 ( +8 / -5 )

White List is at Japan's discretion and it's merely for special treatment. SK has just became not special but just one of them, just as simple as that.

WTO wouldn't be able to say a word against this.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Don't imitate Trump! That will be a disaster!

Literally one sentence contradicts the sentence immediately preceding it. In the first they explicitly say this is due to a dispute about wartime labor, in the next one they say it is about national security and not retaliation (for the wartime labor dispute they just said this was all about).

Absolute nonsense.

Japan is obviously terrified of re-unification between NK and SK.

Korea invalidated the treaty without Japanese consent. This is a respectable treaty violation and national security problems.

Our "national security interests" now where have I heard that before, I think Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has been watching to many Trump movies. -7 ( +6 / -13 )
