Here is to hoping that the US pulls this one out. If they can get Japan to FINALLY open up the agricultural markets it would be a serious game changer!

JA has too much of a choke hold on the politicians and the market here, and it needs to be broken!

Tokyo wants to avoid a bilateral free-trade agreement...where it could come under pressure over access to its auto and agricultural markets.

Interesting how Japan has picked up the free trade banner and is lecturing others about "protectionism." Am I the only one who sees outright hypocrisy here?

With TPP, US frozen-chilled beef tariff would be reduced to 9% from 38.5% while other beef products get reduced to zero. Just rejoin TPP.

Japan should accept higher tariffs on cars but not FTA with US. Protecting Japan's food self-sufficiency is the most important thing.

Japan wants more layers to hide the fact that they are taking advantage of the other side

Just what do you know about Japan and food self-sufficiency? Evidently not much.

You are blinded by the statistics that the government puts out. Open your eyes, Japan is only about 35% to 40% self sufficient, and MUST have foreign imports to feed the people!

THIS is a HUGE problem. The government has blinded the people into thinking that an island nation with next to zero natural resources and poor farm land at best, is self-sufficient in food production.

THis is the farthest thing from the truth, and folks really need to wake the frick up!

Yubaru, I meant "as much as possible".  Everybody knows Japan's food self-sufficiency is dangerously low.

I think you would be surprised at the numbers that dont.

Come back to the TPP, Trump and USA. It is a great deal for democratic Free-trade Nations. USA will more than double the size of TPP, and Japan and USA will be “joint captains”. With the UK set to join soon after “Brexit”, TPP has potential to crush the EU and China, and boost all the joining economies.

For those advocating the TPP route - are you no longer concerned (or maybe never had any) about the US pushing for the pharmaceutical IP over reach (generic drugs blocked for many years longer than today), no exclusions of imports based on GMO food products, and a few other seeming US poison pills rumoured to be in the original?
