What happened to the ¥100 trillion proposed?

Japan has seen a relatively smaller scale outbreak compared to hotspots in Europe and the United States, with around 14,000 infections and 415 deaths as of Thursday.

We have no idea about the real scale of the outbreak here because Japan has suppressed testing in order to keep the numbers low. I have personal experience of this policy and it’s disgraceful.

@B. Jay it states in the article that this bill is part of the ¥100 trillion Bill propose. And actually it’s been bumped up to ¥110 trillion, so that makes it even better.

The measures are part of a larger 110 trillion yen trillion stimulus package that Abe announced last month.

I'm investing my Abe money to help my grandchildren pay their tax bill in the future.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I don't need the money but I will take it and put it in my kids bank accounts.

If they can pass an emergency budget, why are they not staying all night and passing new laws

or even temporary changes to the constitution. They need to shut pubs and pachinko etc and this money should be used to help the pubs and other small shops and people who can't work. Not a blanket everyone gets ¥100,000. Abe and Co. seem to be taking a fingers crossed and close your eyes approach to handling this virus. Pubs please close by 8pm, Pachinko you had better close or we will name you....ha ha ha.

Firm action, actions that will have results are virtually impossible.

This is just the first of four economic stimulus packages that will fly through the air and strike the target right in the bullseye. Think of them as arrows...

The result of the earlier "free-market reforms" of the labor market have put the Japanese economy in an especially perilous state. Many of the contract workers and free lancers are jobless or very close to being so, and so the govt will eventually need to financially assist them well beyond the current spending packages, unless it doesn't mind widespread poverty like in the 30s Depression.

If those rotten "reforms" had never taken place, Japan's economy would be in a much, much stronger position, given that 60% of GDP is from consumer spending.

I'm undecided how I'll spend the money. It will probably just go into my savings account and collect 0 interest. Maybe I ought to buy shares in Zoom or Costco.

For those worried about the effect on the tax base and deficits don't worry; only infinitesimal scraps are coming your way, it is not for you to see and will disappear from your eyes like previous economic bubbles. But rest assured, you and yours will be on the hook to make up for it in the future. /Only partially sarcasm.

Can't wait to collect my 100000 yen and turn it into real money... Gold!! Hyper inflation will soon kill most of your assets and value of so-called money.

But they said the virus wasn't a serious concern and the Olympics could follow as planned. Why is an emergency budget required now?!

The J-government doesn't know a clue what is doing in my thinking, every day they proclaim and urge something new.

It's like a child with a net trying to catch more butterflies at the same time but doesn't know which one to chase.

We all live in uncertain times,we wish to know a solid PLAN like many countries in the west are already doing like Germany.

But the just urge to us to stay home without even knowing what will happen after the golden week.

What a bunch of incompetents.

That 100,000 yen might not mean much to you but those below the poverty line could make a huge difference.

Is that 100,000 yen a one time payment or once a month? Did Japan just get UBI? (albeit a minor floor). I will commend Japan here as it's to be given to everyone to avoid the payout delays. Versus Canada that has already given out money but on specific terms. Means testing people mean well, but it leaves a lot of people left behind.

Extending the lockdown is dumb. Herd immunity is the only way to overcome. Thanks for the little bit of money back, but unless they make it a monthly stipend, then it won't help much. Everyone is still going to mired in varying levels of reduced income but still beholden to the various tax extractions. Those who can telework are fortunate, but many people are furloughed, partially or completely, and it's those who are being bankrupted by the government.

A man and a woman walk near a train station in Tokyo on Thursday

I can see big gaps between the masks and their faces, the chance that those masks will prevent transmission of the virus if it is present either in them or in people they come in close contact with is lower than they probably think.

¥10k I can buy a new 2nd hand scooter and a lawnmower, but my 7 year old business is finished. My hospital job is part time, so no money. I have a mortgage. I need ¥30k to survive for 3 months. 1.5 months passed now.

when I look in the mirror I think I am lucky to be healthy and alive. Summer is coming, beach BBQs.

30million+ unemployed in USA. Just give me ¥30k. I will be alright.

You need more than ¥30k to survive for 3 months.

Summer is coming, beach BBQs.

Not if they close the beaches.

Tell me, is this money going to Abe's friends and relations or to us taxpayers?

"will do whatever is necessary without hesitation"

Hahaha! "Without hesitation" is an oxymoron when it comes to Japanese politicians.
