Negotiation needs compromising from the get both agreement.

That was the result SK and Japan made a signed official document the result in 2015.

There are lots of Japanese does not think so as SK side saying around the world and to their people

and even their professor says what they looking into, they won’t trust these specialist say too.

Since SK side rise the stories more we knew.

But they have never admit what they said to Japan including these so

many stories they added to get the sympathy and educated about Japan hate to their kids

until now on and these all made this result.

Basically comfort women are professional and sold women for the money from the family

and there are some people being deceived from their around were in too since

there were so many fake comfort house as they say it belong to Japanese military,

These owner were Chinese and Korean blockers.

If they step down to see these real evidence,

to hear these true history from these history teller says,

that problem can be slim down as get more easy agreement

get more sympathy from Japan side too.

But unfortunately under what are they doing if we see,

Japanese people hate someone says us laying

like what SK is doing around the world until now on

since we have education as “Liar is the beginning of a thief.”

Our parents says No lying be sincere, to think the feeling for other

as it is happened for yourself to their kids to let them glow.

But there is limit to think about other too even we do the best for them,

They keeping on and under this, do you agree against

what they favor more if you are Japan side?

That it the problem in between SK and Japan

why this issue had never ended.

I can bet you none of those women in that photo give two hoots about the sex slaves.

A source close to the South Korean task force said the report was not intended to prompt the scrapping or renegotiation of the deal.

"By no means is this a review designed to worsen Japan-South Korea relations," the source said. "For the most part, the problems are domestic issues that have nothing to do with Japan."

I am glad that somebody in South Korea is willing to admit the last part in this quote, albeit anonymously. The big problem here is that Park Geun-hye was a totally incompetent and unqualified person for the job of president, and yet more than 15.7 million South Korean citizens voted for her in the December 2012 election. As they say, you reap what you sow. Her time as president was a disaster that set back South Korean democracy a good 15-20 years.

The so-called Comfort Woman 'final agreement ' was forced on Park by Obama.

Nevertheles, Japan should have realized by then that da-kine money can't buy you love when their is no sincerity.

Look at Tokyo's response every time a Comfort Woman statue is unveiled, especially the one in a church in OZ and the IJA arrogance and spirit emerges again.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

The cringe worthy excuses that the typical Koreans are using to justify their government's action is extremely sad. I guess decades of brainwashing to hate Japan results in this kind of behavior even at the highest political stage trickling down to the common people.

10 ( +14 / -4 )

My error- I meant Chong dae Hyup.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The 2015 Agreement between South Korea and Japan is sound. The surviving Comfort Women got their compensation and their apology. Don't see how South Korea would have agreed otherwise.

What articles like this don't tell you is that 34 out of the 46 surviving Comfort Women are satisfied with the 2015 agreement, having accepted the apology and the compensation, or have declared an intent to accept it.

The Chongryon and affiliated organizations that have and continue to fan the flames of this issue with the goal of breaking the US-SK-JPN alliance (gee...who benefits from that?) have effectively highjacked the issue and at now steering the government of South Korea.

"Even so, in December last year, the Reconciliation and Healing Foundation, a body created by the South Korean government to manage the 1 billion yen paid by Japan, announced that 34 of the 46 ex-comfort women then living had received compensation, or had stated their intention to accept it."

Japan will never recognise NK as Washington wont allow it. As far as any agreement with SK is concerned, Japan will have to get approval from its Washington masters.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Japanese government has not regained their dignity

for comfort women in Korea as new.

But I think that the point Japanese government cannot do any help

without they paid the money for them and apology for them as SK

government asked them to finish this case.

After that what support can do is SK government should think about it

since Japanese side cannot touch into SK and give them direction as

they do it to Japanese people against SK people too is impossible

and cannot open their mouth what SK needed to do for getting

their satisfied.

What Japanese government can do it is what SK government

asked them only and they applied and agreed both the reason

this case was announced as “It was declared irreversibly resolved”

Internationally from both of countries.

SK said there were secret agreement in between Japan and SK

and comfort women did not know this agreement in advance

the reason it is problem for them. (But there is no government

asks their people what they can agree in advance…

so also they saying very strange from my view…)

So it is the problem not for Japan and what they

SK government made this problem in between

their comfort women and their people.

So they asked Japan to talk with this matter again

is non of sense they have.

SK government is trouble maker to Japanese government,

they always bring their trouble to Japan like this

when they cannot get the support from their people.

It looks like they are always escaping from their people eyes

even what actually it was SK government needed to do for

their people also as they say “Because Japan

was making this problem to them.”

So the reason they need anti-Japan education for their people

as making them easy to upsetting to Japan to do not catch

their people’s eyes to their useless government unfortunately.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

In addition, I want to talk what SK people had been educated

about their comfort women case as just their government

and business human rights says.

But if we stand back and think about what they say you

as they are true story, we have sooo many questions

since these are all from without conclusion

and the point spreading this has anti-Japanese education with.

They think they are victim by Japanese government about 70 years ago.

But victim sometimes does not say the truth to get sympathy from others.

There are lots of victim became talk the story more terribly.

Making the addition to tell this story more terribly as for getting other

people’s sympathy. If you know Korean, they are very much over react

and make the story easier as their characteristics that you knew .

So this is the result what their anti-Japan education made up

until now on and spreading “their fact” to the world too.

They say “sex slave” under world war 2 is one of it too.

Comfort women counts always glowing up as new more

since from the past and now and then they say 200000 people.

But why only less than 50 around still alive? If that counts

were true, there were more comfort women alive definitely.

Then SK is also saying to Japanese government

what they said them are truth, and said to the world

to let build up their statue with their anti-Japan addition.

There is no truth also even there are real comfort women

that is the problem why Japanese cannot take what Korean says to Japan

with the reason also this comfort women case they claimed to Japan became

full of their new additional stories and became the most not being truth even too so.

Also Korean people has some problem as even their history professor looked into

this truth and said that result to their people, they do not trust against

what they studied.

And even told them that result, they are screaming at these professor as

“You are Japanese criminal!”  because they have anti-Japan education.

To stand as they said sounds Japanese side, also Korean people thinks

as the person traitor against SK people.

At least 2-3 Korean history professor were saying the comfort women case in SK

was caught by their government and yelling by their people during several years

as they said it is not truth or it is human rights violation against comfort women.

Then they were caught the result of the trail or needed to bend their knees

in front of these human rights group to do apology.

I think to finish this, there is only the way Korean people themselves

can open their eyes...  and to know what their anti-edication is bringing to them.

There is no satisfied and finished for their history complex

as long as what they keep to do this anti-Japan education

even Japanese government knew this but respect

as anyway they are victim under the war the reason

they let them help or apology them again and again.

You know, some of things that Japanese soldiers did to Australian PoW's in WW2 were beyond brutal, they were absolutely horrendous. Students in Australia were actually taught about this when I was growing up. We knew what happened. That knowledge impacted our relationship with Japan for a long time, but with good will, both countries moved passed it. Now the situation could not be more different. Now our relationship with Japan is, without doubt, the best we have with any country in the Asia.

@Matt

Can you elaborate on “with good will”? If this is a model of reconciliation, did Japan apologize? Was there compensation? Why do Aussies not repeatedly bring up these brutal acts? Is it because the victims were men in Auatralia’s case and the sex slaves were women in South Korea’s? Is it because of the sheer number of victims? What can South Korea learn from Australia?

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

Hi Wallace Fred,

Happy New Year to you and your family. I won't pretend to have the answerers. I hope that after February's PyeongChang 2018 Olympics issues don't come to ahead.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

pacinct: "People like you are part of the problem. Time has moved on and the for you to do the same."

You didn't answer my question about North Korean abductees... if South Korea must "forget it and move on" because you would rather have people run away from the truth and hide, isn't it about time Japan "moves on" from the abductee issue? North Korea has already said it was resolved, and if one nation says so, as Japan is doing here, then it must be so, right? Or wait... is it suddenly "different" as it always is?

No, my friend... people like you, who demand it be forgotten, are the problem. Europe HAS moved on, because Germany was repentant. YOU are suggesting the victims forget about it here instead.

-16 ( +5 / -21 )

I agree that the two governments need to get past this issue, but Koreans and Japanese have been fighting each other for a lot longer than the 1940s.

Australia-Japan or US-Japan relations is not a fair comparison. Many Japanese/Koreans were raised to distrust each other over centuries.

Nevertheless I agree the focus should be on averting a war with the North (which would be deadly for S. Korea and Japan alike), not in looking back to the wounds of the past.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

I think their(SK) biggest problem is education.

I am sorry for SF but I am same as Chika,  SF is the base

of Chinese to do the propaganda and might control US for a long time.

Just these Chinese people get the hands SK to use them to do not make

their duty hands the case it is.

SK, also they are keeping anti-Japan education over 70 years.

These are of course making story more and more badly to give

their people upset, shocked and pay attention to Japan

how Japan did so bad to them, but who read them are kids,

so they believe these all as for their real history immediately

and it became forgettable memories what they studied too.

They used to have a military government same as China and NK

and it was finished just 15 years ago.

But their education does not changed same as China and North Korea

they are using Japan to gathering the people to do not pay attention

to their government to do not be targeting their eyes when they are useless.

We should know about 77% real comfort women were agreed what Japan and South Korea

decided and they also received that money too on this case. Who against what these

2 governments decided were SK their leader Moon, SK government who is using

this problem to control their people, and their human rights group who has business

with this case and using these some comfort women for their business.

And these young SK people who just has their anti-Japan education.

If SK people can see this real world. They can know how their government might

to control them. You see? If they can think about really about these comfort

women feeling, It looked like these young Korean people on the demo

and their government, what they are doing is like raping these

comfort women’s feeling again. And what other government, city helps

these human rights propaganda that makes more raping actual comfort

women feeling too. That Mayer Lee let SF city to join because he has

Chinese and Korean citizen behind unfortunately…

I saw other news comfort women not belong to the human rights were upsetting

to their SK government too. Because they are also feeling like their government is using

them as for propaganda. Who can think about them? If SK people really can think

sorry for their life happened under the war for sure they can not rape their feeling

again like this and they should be touch their actual feeling more.

I have read up on all of the historical meetings up to this article concerning the payment and agreements of this topic. However I wish the news reporter would follow the money and contributors to keep this topic yet again appearing and to what gains monetary or otherwise. First lets take a step back from this and see who is involved, hmmm Moon is clearly not a US or Japan supporter despite issues with NK and has stronger ties to yes, China, secondly an ongoing closer tie to Japan and the US weakens a Chinese grip on both countries because of the US umbrella something Moon is willing to give up in exchange for Chinese business of which literally wrecked their economic gains in the early 2000's. China and NK do have a backdoor channels and thus a reporter should follow the money trail which will lead them to major SK companies, i.e LG construction, SK etc. all major receivers of Chinese brown envelope gifts and have tight strings on Moon and the SK government foothold. I don't buy this tactic by SK but see this as a means to weaken allegiance and strategic ties to benefit China, who cares very little about what happened to the SK comfort women.  That was then and Japan has paid its price in full twice, the first time turn to the now deceased Park and his major construction contributors. Follow the money then to see who got the big construction jobs and how much of that money actually wen to the comfort women..hmm

So anyone who thinks the solution to this issue is “obvious” is living in a fantasy world.

But ultimately the solution is obvious. Embrace 2018 and the future beyond. Both countries are representative democracies. Both face the same threats. Both countries are major players in Asia and will continue to be.

People and societies can move on. It just takes the recognition that the past is the past and cannot be undone. Now is the time to move forward. This continuous hostility does not benefit South Korea or Japan in any way.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

The Japanese Government needs to pass a Resolution whereby it would be illegal for any Japanese Politician in the future to address the Comfort Woman issue other than to say... The issue has previously been dealt with and Japan will absolutely not discuss is further. It is over... Japan has dealt with the issue.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

its not just S. Korean and Japanese governments who are being stubborn on this issue. The article itself has generated more comments than any other in Japan Today’s homepage. So anyone who thinks the solution to this issue is “obvious” is living in a fantasy world.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Yes the statues were not covered in the deal, so Japan can't insist on anything there. It can keep mentioning that it is not happy if it wants, but it won't really help and in fact only draws attention to it. But anyway I think Japan should just keep quiet and dignified at this point. If SK is repudiating the whole agreement it will only reflect badly on their side, not on Japan.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

A deal's a deal, and there are two sides to the deal. On the Japanese side, the deal is recognition—permanent recognition—of the atrocities committed. Japan is reneging on this aspect of the deal. Denialism and revisionism must be dealt with or the deal is void.

If the Japanese government is working in good faith, then why demand, for example, the removal of statues?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

errrr....

You sing a contract you are binded by the contract that with your sign acknowledge and approve its contents.

If you go around saying you don't recognise the document, because you don't agree with the content (that again, you signed) most probably you will be charged with charges of Fraud and extortion....

An international document signed by 2 countries and having witnesses of third party countries and organizations... has even more weight than a mere civilian contract

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Japan should say to S. Korea: "A deal's a deal. We will continue to fulfill our side of the bargain and we expect you to, too. If you want to discuss other stuff which does not run counter to what we agreed in this deal, we will consider it. We remain sorry for what happened and recognise that we needed to make amends as we agreed in this deal." And leave it at that.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Japan has negotiated and reached agreements with previous SK administrations in regards to the Sex Slave issue but the issue is still unresolved. So SK is wrong and Japan is right. But we still have to solve the problem. Why walk away from the problem?

The discussion now should be what else we can do to put this issue in the past for good. Walking away from negotiations will only worsen relations and given the current situation with yet another missile to be launched within a few weeks or a month per CNN, it is especially in the best interest of both countries to work this out.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

Hey itsonlyrocknroll nice response. Id like to respond myself if I may.

people of Japan are not remotely responsible for

Totally in agreement. It would also go a long way if the same people actually 'voted' for an administration that didnt have so many as you succinctly put it 'old fools'

Inorder to promote true peace and harmony in the region, a lot of effort must be placed into the re-education of the next generation so issues such as these are put to bed once and for all.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

The ink is not even dry and Korea is saying the deal was flawed? You signed it!

13 ( +16 / -3 )

Hi Wallace Fred, I agree,  through facilitated learning an understanding of/to the historic relationships of imperialism can reconcile a cultural struggle for accountability and atonement. So fulfilling a necessity to bring justice, in this case for psychological effects of what I consider to be a gross injustice.

To hold the  people of Japan legally culpable when 80% where neither present and 63 % recoil at the thought of revising the pacifist constitution is harsh beyond reason.

A number of bad apple zealots, some within  Abe san cabinet  are  frequently quoted, given undue  front centre media attention that inflames tensions between neighbours.

There is no fool like a old fool , so they need to be judged in context to a population that is devoted to peaceful coexistence.  The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for the Military Sexual Slavery by Japan are a political group hell bent on  a path of recriminatory restitution and are prepared to hold twenty first century  Japan entire population hostage demanding they humiliatingly accept present day 'legal responsibility'  and recompense as a  'crime against humanity' .

A crime that the people of Japan are not remotely responsible for.

Europe has moved on as a whole, yet some issues were dropped as resolution was not possible to satisfy everyone.

Time to wake and stop stirring the 70yr old mess which benefits no one.

6 ( +14 / -8 )

What the government of South Korea is doing are the kind of things that just keeps the animosity between the two countries alive. And it does it to cover their own internal problems, which is even more insidious.

It really doesn't matter how many times Japan apologizes and give them money, the South Korean government always find a way to ask for more, which at the same time nullifies whatever meaning the apology had in the first place, and gives more credibility to anti-Korean rhetoric.

15 ( +20 / -5 )

pacint: "If you want peace than stay away from this topic and just live your life."

Yup. Rather than address it, admit it, and work peacefully to solve it, just take the Japan route and pretend it never happened, ignore it, and when needed deny it, and blame everyone else. Then hope it fades over time and you never have to take the first three steps.

"Harping on about past issues is not the way forward."

Another key attitude in showing how impressive Germany is owning up to and never forgetting the past, and moving forward, as compared with Japan which denies it, wants to forget it, and demand it be forgotten after paying money, but selectively remember when IT was the victim of atrocities like the atomic bombings. I'm guessing you are not against Japan "harping on about past issues" when it comes to NK abduction, right?

-17 ( +8 / -25 )

If you want peace than stay away from this topic and just live your life.

This topic is exactly what prevents preface and goodwill, move on and build a better/brighter future for everyone. Harping on about past issues is not the way forward.

The Government of Japan must challenge the President Moon Jae In Government publicly to take steps and fully disassociate and purge all ministries of the toxic influence and prejudicial political activism from The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for the Military Sexual Slavery by Japan. This groups structure and mission is to divide and fan the flames of discontent, callously insisting former Korean comfort women, flail old pensioners, displaying them as poisonous political exhibits to ensure retribution continues through the generations.

While at it, could the same government then make an effort to revise its educational material and add the missing verifiable historical evidence of its mass atrocities as well as make it punishable to deny as such?

-7 ( +7 / -14 )

I want to apologize to all the Japanese people for my rude remarks and I want you to understand that it was just my own personal opinion so please don't take it too seriously! I just want peaceful relations between Japan and Korea! Have a nice day to all the Japanese living all over the world!

私は日本人全員に無礼に謝罪したいと思っています。それは私自身の個人的な意見であることを理解していただきたいので、あまり重大ではありません。 私は日本と韓国の平和な関係がほしいのです! 世界中のすべての日本人に良い一日を!

1 ( +5 / -4 )

It is discomfiting to know that South Korean government did reach a rather shameful forced compromise in 2015 with Japan regarding the comfort women issue, probably under powerful Tokyo's coercion. Of course, Japan would insist on honoring the agreement. Too bad, Seoul has bowed to former colonial master.

-15 ( +4 / -19 )

Oh, well if JAPAN said it, that's the way it is! And don't forget, many in Japan, including some posters on here, say it never happened to begin with.

OssanAmerica: "Nobody is denying anything. How could South Korea and Japan have reached an agreement in 2015 if Japan "denied" anything?"

Easily, Japan paid money to make it go away... or so they thought. You yourself have denied that the IJA coerced Korean women into sexual slavery, saying they were "well paid prostitutes" (your words), and that if they were forced it was by their own families. You have categorically denied it again and again. But, feel free to prove me wrong, friend -- now's your chance: admit the Imperial Army of Japan forced Korean, Chinese, and women of many other nationalities AND Japanese, into sexual slavery. But, I'm guessing you just won't reply, because you know I'm right. And THAT is why the deal is not a deal at all, and should not be honored by SK. Let them pay the money back, for sure, but the issue is not going to be swept under the table now or ever as long as people claim it did not happen, or that Japan is the victim on the issue.

-19 ( +9 / -28 )

I would never want to diminish the suffering of the people who went through that mess, but dagnabbedit South Korea, enough is enough already. Hey, we had all better be pulling together what with North Korea, China, Russia (I know, I know, but in 1989, all the communists didn't die) and other communist/socialist countries wanting to KILL us all it seems.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

You know a country is internally weak and its people naive, when the main narrative of its government is the typical nationalistic barking at the outside, instead of solving its own internal crisis.

19 ( +24 / -5 )

Check out the picture. Those are all young women who weren't even a twinkle in their parents eyes when this thing started. How many generations will have to be apologized to and compensated? This issue will never die, so good on Japan for saying Enough!

23 ( +28 / -5 )

Some of these comments are absolutely disgusting. The women have clearly stated that the issue is not about money and that they want an official and clear admission and apology. Japan has continually claimed to have already apologized while it's leaders from its Prime Minister to scores of niggling politicians and dinosaur academics have persistently denied and even beautifies Japanese war atrocities. This is not some subtle thing. It is in your face and it is the defining Japanese societal challenge in the 20th century.

-20 ( +6 / -26 )

Korean leaders seem eager to fall back on the comfort woman issue to distract the populace from their own failings. Japan has become the convenient whipping boy, much like countries in the middle east treat Israel. It's become a self-perpetuating issue and now that SK feels moved to erect comfort woman statues in every city and town in the world, it's no wonder Japan is throwing up its hands in frustration over SK's childish tactics of "tattletale diplomacy."

18 ( +22 / -4 )

Sounds like 1/2 the women complaining about sexual harassment in Hollywood lately. Take the money, sign the NDA and wait years to “revisit” the topic but of course the money won’t be given back.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

It seems that S Korea reneges on more agreements/deals coming with Japan in the future, so Japan can't trust it any more if S Korea breaks the very official agreement. Japan better ignore and stay away from such a country as well as North Korea.

OssanAmerica.

Examples - I think that we would be going off-topic.

I always thought that the deal was wrong, and the previous SK administration was foolish to agree with it. Now SK as a whole looks foolish with this thing.

melonbarmonsterToday 08:13 am JSTYou can't claim you've apologized for something you deny at the same time

Nobody is denying anything. How could South Korea and Japan have reached an agreement in 2015 if Japan "denied" anything?

Ex_ResToday 08:07 am JSTOssanAmerica

I would say that Japan does not have a very good track record when it comes to "reneg" on agreements.

Give some examples.

Shumatsu_SamuraiToday 07:47 am JSTOssan, maybe Japan should recognise North Korea as the legitimate government of Korea. Then Japan would be much less likely to face missile attack from "L'il Rocket Kim".

Interestingly North Korea does have a defacto embassy in Japan through the existence of the Chongryon. Whereas North Korea does not recognize South Korea so one does not exist there.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

You can't claim you've apologized for something you deny at the same time. The agreement is irrelevant. It says nothing and the poor women themselves have refused Japanese money. Just admit Japan's role in these atrocities and let history be history. Without frank and genuine admission and reconciliation, this is going to continue to persist.

Whatever you think of Korea, Japan's "apologies" don't mean anything when they keep retracting them, as well as teaching revisionist versions in which the women supposedly "volunteered".

Are these people for real? South Korea is facing the biggest threat to it's existence right now and they want to wreck the US-JPN-SK alliance? Good for Japan on standing it's ground. Neither a person nor country can "reneg" on an agreement if the other party has fulfilled their obligations under that agreement. In this case Japan has done so.

So this is the second time Japan has signed an agreement with South Korea over the same historical issues, and a subsequent SK government saying the agreement is unacceptable because of public sentiment.

Maybe from now on, Japan should refuse to sign any agreements with South Korea unless it has first been proposed and approved by the SK public in a referendum - with minimum 75% turnout and minimum 75% approval. Otherwise this is going to happen every time whatever SK party is in Opposition thinks it can score votes by claiming Japan is being insincere.
