If they need two on station at all times then they need to buy three. Otherwise when one goes in for maintenance that will be when someone strikes. You need to rotate 3 ships to account for ongoing maintenance and upgrades.

China has not stopped or slowed down its military buildup and massive ship building programs due to the pandemic. Japan wants to stay free and be able to ensure it can make choices in its own best interests rather than to be bullied into doing what is in China's best interests because it has a navy three or four times the size or even bigger.

The number of Combat capable ships in Japan's navy is currently 73 plus 21 mine countermeasure ships.

China has 3.6 combat ships, many of them are new and modern, for every 1 Japanese ship. That number will pass 4 to 1 in a couple of years at the current rate of ship building in China. Where will it end? Just how big do they intend on making the Chinese Navy? I am worried and I am much further away from China than Japan is.

And China wants the Senkaku's. At this rate they will soon take them. They have the ships to muscle Japan out of the area already. Thank God the US navy is in Okinawa deterring China from taking them right now.

It is cheaper to be prepared to fight than to accept defeat without a fight.

Thanks for taking the time to give us the numbers of Chinese airforce and navy. Helps to see, and understand Japan's situation if it ever goes sour between Japan and China.

If Japan considers China a rogue Commie state then why do they have such strong economic ties with them? Japan is one of the main reasons that China became an economic power and has been able to strengthen their military to what it is today. The Japanese Govt. allows companies to make profits by doing business with China and then they use Tax money to build up their defense against an attack by China. It seems to me that the Japanese Policy towards China is that they are an Economic Ally and a Military Enemy at the same time and that is a strange policy indeed.

China was able to build up their Military mostly thanks to trading with the U.S. and Japan so you have those 2 countries to thank for the Military that China has today.

Ships cost more in maintenance eventually.

Japan's JMSDF is much smaller than the PLAN. China will have four aircraft carriers shortly as they are building two big deck CATOBAR nuclear powered carriers at a new yard in Shanghai. J-20 fighters have been seen flying with a catapult launch bar on the nose landing gear just like USN and French carrier based aircraft have so their air wings will soon have that aircraft in their inventory. They also have a big E-2 copy being tested. If you are just counting hulls the PLAN has more ships than the US Navy. There is a qualitative difference of course but China is closing that gap with its newest classes of ships. Ten or fifteen years ago the JMSDF could have handled the PLAN but not now. Ship for ship and sailor for sailor the JMSDF is vastly better than the PLAN, I have seen both navies up close and personal, but numbers matter and take it from someone married to a Chinese woman and their family, the Chinese like to fight. Sharp elbows and hot tempers. Even the USN will have a tough time operating close to China, meaning close enough to defend Okinawa or Taiwan for example.

That cuts both ways. Japan and China both are big buyers of US debt. Both nations use the excess cash earned from their trade surpluses with the US to buy up US Treasury bonds. This soaks up those excess dollars so the value of the dollar stays high, that of the Yen and Yuan remains low and thus the terms of trade remain favorable to Japan and China. But the ability of the US to run budget deficits year after year knowing there are willing buyers in Japan and China for their debt instruments has allowed the US to finance a vast military, possibly much larger than the nation would be willing to pay for if the nation had to run balanced budgets year after year. From the Chinese perspective you have to understand they know full well their purchases of US bonds helps the US defend Taiwan and China. They hate doing it but it is an economic necessity for their trade dependent economy.

Well they are not China's only trading partners. And lets not forget, you need two things to grow, money from investments and raw resources to build with. China gets most of It's resources from Australia and Brazil so add them plus European investment to the list of those responsible. Like I mentioned previously, Japan alone is not to blame, there are many to apportion blame to for investing in China for the "quick buck" returns.

Remember prior to the ascension of Xi Jinping to the positions of President of the PRC, General Secretary of the CCP and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, it appeared that just as many in the west expected China was moving albeit slowly towards a more open and democratic society. You might recall that in the last two years of Hu Jintao's administration there was a dead serious discussion in the National People's Congress of permitting private land ownership. There were even small scale, town level, competitive elections for town leadership positions. At that point, circa 2010 there was no real reason to fear China as we do now and it looked like they were gradually moving towards a more relaxed and open society. Xi Jinping reversed all of that and has turned out to be far more aggressive than anyone imagined. I suspect many in the CCP regret his rise now, though at the time he was elected as General Secretary he was plucked from obscurity (hardly anyone knew who he was until you mentioned he was the husband of singer Peng Liyuan. Everyone knew her. He was thought to be the least offensive candidate compared to others who had sworn enemies within the CCP. I'm certain now that many in the party regret that choice as he has gone on to anger many both inside and outside China.

Even of the pandemic, China has not halted or slowed down its military buildup and large ship building projects.
