I picked up a juminhyo the other day and the various labeled cabinets and multiple staff members spoke of the numerous paper-based processes that they have in place. That I need a copy of a juminhyo at all says things too..

I wonder if Suga sent out any faxes announcing the creation of this new agency.

The latest attempts of the Japanese government to digitalize things have not gone well, before trying to speed up something that has been done quite badly why not establish an agency to secure the process against the multiple problems that have been found recently?

Yes, and this new agency will require some paperwork to process the documents, that will need to be Hanko'ed and then faxed to the regional offices, which will then have a series of meetings to approve the paperwork, after which a central committee will need to form consensus on the best way to digitalize. Those findings will then be faxed back to the regions, printed, shared, copied, and Hanko'ed again. Of course, they will need new plastic sheets and a paper ticket numbering system in the city halls to inform the public of this modernization. And please, don't forget your Hanko.

I wonder how they all survived through all history until the 90’s, without that massive digitalization, with hanko and with a lot of cash in the hand during the bubble economy. I mean, that is what we need, a number of steps back to the bubble, purses full of cash, love letters per fax machines, quick messages per , more wedding and child birth registrations with Hanko. Nobody really needs empty virtual bank accounts, thousands of registrations for virtual payments, deleting spam mails in the computers and phones the whole day, the same waiting times, minutes or hours, for booting newest hi-tech computers and displaying overloaded websites or installing not working updates every week and so on, blockchaining and coining that needs more resources than you can spare with your little recycling and electric toy cars, and a lot more of things that only look like progress , but are not. I am very long in IT and in comparison to earlier years I have to say, it has become a mess again, nothing is working well and without errors anymore, although the devices have become more sophisticated and faster , theoretically. Added all the international cyber threats, privacy rules , planned AI bias restrictions and all such, we all can’t work in a productive style anymore. It’s soon all over, although you surely still don’t want to see that and probably disagree.

What an embarrassment for a country that tours itself as a modern technology leader.

Japan has no longer been the leader for 30 years now. Starting with the dotcom boom and bubble, other countries started overtaking Japan.

Japan's technological level is more on par with the Philippines, less the poverty.

The public systems that require vast numbers of people to operate them vs private Japanese companies which can stop on a dime and move off as quick are completely worlds apart.

I once thought that Japan was quaint now I know the truth...

Why don't they try and accomplish just ONE goal first? Instead of just making up new stuff that will never happen?

Speed and Japan are two opposite words

Digitization and Japan still require its citizens to rubber stamp documents, and currently use a filing system to file papers at wards. LMFAO

I wouldn’t be surprised if they resurrect fax modems and use them to receive faxes on their PCs instead of paper and call that digitalization. It is still digitalization because paper is not being used anymore right? Not to mention that you can paste image of your hanko to the image of the fax and you have perfect digital workflow.

I have no doubt they'll push big tech to have the function added to fax machines.

Japan has an extremely long way to go to become a digitalized nation. Anybody who has been to a city hall or immigration office knows very well how Japan is run on a huge paper trail and little red stamps.

It also extends internationally. I went to the Japanese consulate in Sydney today. I had to have my fingerprints recorded for a Japanese police check. The fingerprinting set up comprised of a stamp pad and a cardboard box wrapped in a plastic bag for printing on. I couldn’t help but laugh. Fax to a phone number that then sends you an email with the document.

I am sure it hasn't been done before.

The new entity will promote the My Number personal identification system, currently under the jurisdiction of the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, so that it can be utilized in such occasions.

Just a regressive tax collection scheme with no benefit to the general public.
