It's original purpose was to honour those that died, it's since become a place of historical abuse, revionest view of factual history. Other countries honor those that died for their country, but they don't make up what happened. That's the problem with Sending gifts, your wife to a place that has become a rallying cry for right wingers who lust for a return to 1930.

Abe sent offerings. How pathetic, Donald Trump would have laid a wreath at the graves of Nazi leaders

Anyhoo, a politician or anyone else has a right to honor their war dead. I don't see why Japan is any different,

You're not aware that Yasukuni Shrine is a private religious establishment, unlike the public facilities where politicians can honour their war dead in other countries, or that the Japanese Constitution separates government from religion?

Abe and his ilk aren't honouring the war dead. I'm sure lots of important or famous people in other walks of life visit Yasukuni, e.g. actors, yet it's only ever right-wing politicians that we ever hear about. Why do you suppose that is?

he has the right to go.

It's just names on a list. Take the Class A war criminals off the list. That's it.

If you want to send the ultimate offering, please send your resignation, along with Aso's.

"In late 2013, Abe sparked widespread international outrage, including from key ally the United States as well as China and South Korea, when he visited the shrine."

The US expressed disappointment because the visit would give China and SKorea fuel to bash Japan. There was never any "outrage" on the part of the United States towards the visit itself.

"Japan is a valued ally and friend. Nevertheless, the United States is disappointed that Japan’s leadership has taken an action that will exacerbate tensions with Japan's neighbors.

The United States hopes that both Japan and its neighbors will find constructive ways to deal with sensitive issues from the past, to improve their relations, and to promote cooperation in advancing our shared goals of regional peace and stability.

We take note of the Prime Minister’s expression of remorse for the past and his reaffirmation of Japan’s commitment to peace."

China's relations with Japan have long been soured by what Beijing sees as Tokyo's failure to atone for its occupation of parts of China before and during World War Two, although ties have thawed recently.

The usual cookie cutter paste statements regarding China, the Korea's, and Japan. Surprised there wasn't any mention about the "lingering bitterness." So predictable.

Anyhoo, a politician or anyone else has a right to honor their war dead. I don't see why Japan is any different, not all those who have served in the Japanese military throughout history have committed was crimes. Guarantee, there are many war criminals in military cemeteries throughout the world.

@hachikou

Nothing in what you wrote proves that what Reuters wrote (and that you even quoted in your message) is wrong. It seems you are repeating arguments trying to prove another point.

Fact : There ARE war criminals enshrined in Yasukuni, and those people ARE responsible for horrible things during the War. How can anyone try to dispute or balance this is beyond understanding.

14 Japanese leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal as war criminals, was seen partly out of consideration of improving relations with China, with President Xi Jinping expected to visit Japan when it hosts a G20 summit.

Reuters still write stupid articles.

Yasukuni has been there long before WW2. Korean and Taiwanese were honored as well.

Toji Hideki, Yasukuni honored A-class criminal , who joined the cabinet and became Japanese prime minister after invasion to China. He has nothing to do with Nanjin incident.

The prime minister, Fumimaro Konoe, who was responsible for teaming up with Nazi and invasion of China is not honored in Yasukuni,

Japanese Left who hates Yasukuni and hates Japanese Right spreads propaganda and uses Asian people to attack Yasukuni.

Gotta maintain the base.

He'll go again, he always does. Note the Emperor will continue the tradition of never going there

Any countries’ war dead have lost their lives in some way making your nation what it is today.

I’m Japanese and I respect our deceased, especially the ones generations ago who probably had little choice or say and were sent to slaughter or be slaughtered.

Agreeing is one thing, respect is another.

And you wonder why nobody trusts the Japanese government and Abe in particular.
