and I need people to judge whether to let me do so through elections

i pray for a miracle and the voters decide to not let him spend all our money

Mm,m and what about households? Single parents, those earning less than 3m a year? What are his thoughts on the recent rise in food and utilities? Might need a new pair of glasses and less curtains in his car.

I think the LDP are worried about the general election coming up. They know the public is pissed off with them for holding the Olympics despite widespread opposition. Also the way that Bach spat on Japan and on what the people wanted is not lost on the electorate. Suga's incompetent leadership alongside Abe's scandal riddled one is going to leave a bad aftertaste of LDP in the public's mouth. So now, they are desperate to win back votes by promising the world to the electorate.

I hope the people here are not dumb enough to believe their BS and vote them out or at least weaken their rule significantly. If they don't NOTHING will change

Japan's recovery could become stronger as the vax rate rises, infection numbers fall and restrictions eased. A really big stimulus package may not be needed. But I guess they figure it's better to overshoot than undershoot, given the small inflation risk.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

Open everything up and won't need a stimulus.

Stupid!

The sooner you open the country the more money there will flow.

If you going to give a way money. Give it directly to people who need it that lost homes to landslides.

That's suffered death or loss directly from this virus.

But better yet. Spend in research for better masks. Better and clearer air. On ways to curb the spread of all pathogens and virus.

END THE PANDEMIC!!!!!!

I doubt he has a big enough quiver for the necessary number of little arrows.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

deliver a "large-scale" package to stimulate Japan's pandemic-hit economy

I love this man already. Please give each individual ¥5,000,000 and insist we spend it on GoToTravel.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Lemme guess, 4 arrows!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Isn’t that vote buying?

Always remember governments and politicians do not have any money, whatever they promise you, they first have to take out of your pocket so as to give a smaller amount back.

Thats how generous politicians are.

16 ( +16 / -0 )

@klausdorth

”And who is gonna pay for all this”

Don’t worry. The new PM’s. large-scale economic package will be all financed by issuing government bonds. Not a bit of your tax money will be used.

Kishida has said the stimulus package will be worth tens of trillions of yen and extend support to businesses reeling from the coronavirus pandemic.

Right ..it has businesses that have been reeling as since the start of the pandemic response there has been: massive direct bailouts of travel related businesses and airlines that then were supplemented with the GoTo program to further stimulate their businesses.

As they pocketed the money, downsized, and radically reduced their staffing.

Monthly subsidies to businesses for closing at 8.

The public-carry on, bully and thank you for your support.

Kishida:The Koizumi and Abe regime's neoliberal policies have exacerbated economic misery in Japan.

Solution: More trickle down , supply side economic policy.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

He can promise anything, it's not his money.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Kishida pledges large economic stimulus as by-election campaigns start

Corporate welfare for companies to bank and sit on?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

How will he pay for this? C'mon man!

He'll have the Bank of Japan mint a 1 trillion Yen coin and give it back to the Bank of Japan to pay for it.

Heads will be Hello Kitty to show he is serious about female power, and tails will be Totoro to show he supports traditional Showa values.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Why help the businesses from the little guy’s tax money and not the little guy directly?

Why not lower taxes on the little guy including consumption tax?

This is not a stimulus package!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Just lower the consumption tax for few years. We'll be glad.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Apparently he is planning another Go to Campaign

2 ( +2 / -0 )

people have suffered so much from this COVID monster, they have been waiting on the government to start direct deposits into their accounts since late June, and nothing happened, only EMPTY PROMESES.

People are bleeding to death and not holding their breath, the time has come for the government to start supporting the general public and the giant corps.

Japanese politics is a ....joke!

They can only get away with this hyperbole because the Japanese population is continually brainwashed into thinking that politics does not matter....

Where is the article about the opposition's pledges?

What opposition? NHK just had a major feature on Komeito on their 7 o' clock news. Edano and the CDP will get 5 minutes at 4am tomorrow. The Communist Party will get nothing.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

So where are all the people complaining about ‘my tax money’ ?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Money printing and tax increases won’t help those that need help. All you’re doing with abenomics 2 is paying salarymen bigger wages and increasing the cost of living..

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Yes, because businesses were the only ones that suffered the past two years. Idiot. How about the rest of the population?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Kishida gets too much air time..need to pay less attention to him and more to the opposition !!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Okay, so we had the "Abe vow", which was just a lie every time, the "Suga Swear", also lies, and now the "Kishida Pledge", which of course will be more lies, given that he can't EVER tell us HOW he plans to do the miracles he pledges to do.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

'PM pledges large economic stimulus' - there must be an election about to start!

Where is the article about the opposition's pledges?

I'm sure we'll hear about all that a couple of days after the election is over. We don't want people to know that kind of information before they vote, it might affect choices.

... and saying by by but in the end your words have no influnces in Japana s a gainin so live with it okay?

Not much different from a lot of Japanese people who can actually vote, then.

Phone “packets”, how quaint.

An elderly gentleman perhaps? Judging from the spelling and level of literacy displayed I think you’d best save your complaints about freedom of speech for the morning after a sting black coffee.

When he says, in his vague and unspecified way, that he wants to spend our money for us, we know instinctively and with the benefit of hindsight that it won’t be accruing to you or I but going as a bribe to others. That dejavu all over again feeling is history rhyming.

Lots of Japanese are limited by their mobility, train service are reliable, but are flexible like American, who use their cars too maintain a side hustle

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Solution: More trickle down , supply side economic policy.

Since when did government spending trillions amount to supply side policy?

Yes this sort of demand side Keynesian spending splurge proposed by Kishida is very very much “trickle down” though..,

It sure ain’t supply side ( or “neoliberal” ) though.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Slickdrifter is right- the economy can't recover until everything is opened. But having a "pandemic" allows government to maintain large degrees of control over society. So, while done in other countries, it won't end anytime soon in Japan. It is a political emergency, not a health one.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Why is the solution to spend tax money to stimulate the economy?

Because we have been riding out a massive global pandemic, that has pummeled entire sectors of the economy and nearly caused the collapse of some major industries, like air travel. If not for the huge amounts of govt stimulus spent, we would be plunged into a great depression worse than anything seen in modern times.

Things arent great but they could have been way, way worse.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Since when did government spending trillions amount to supply side policy?

When the spending is directed exclusively at capital holders, businesses and corporations and bypasses the public except in the false assertion that it will eventually trickle down to them in the form of job creation or higher wages, which never happens.

I can link you to multiple Wikipedia ,Britannica or other standard definitions but I suspect you already know these corporate friendly policies are textbook neoliberal supply side trickle down economics.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Supply side doesn’t advocate for money to be spent in those ways.

Nor does supply side policy claim that there will be such a “trickle down” effect.

That’s a bogus argument that has been debunked over and again, here’s a concise essay by the great Thomas Sowell;

https://www.hoover.org/sites/default/files/uploads/documents/Sowell_TrickleDown_FINAL.pdf

Big government socialism style spending is not what supply side policy advocates. But trickle down is what it achieves
