he vowed to encourage Japanese firms to raise pay

He vows to encourage them to strongly consider forming committees to study the issue with a view toward eventually discussing the possibility of implementing balanced measures that promote economic and social vitality.

promoting women but not applicable to yourself...dinosaurs forever.

With a government leadership team like that I’d say “precarious position” was the best spin that could be used to describe the chances of normal people being considered in any decision let alone foreign conundrums.

Hey @plasticmonkey, since when did you take up the job of government spokesperson? You do it perfectly!

10 ( +15 / -5 )

Touching on the coronavirus, stimulus measures and foreign policy challenges, Kishida said Japan is in a "precarious situation" that requires political leadership to get through.

'Precarity' is a characteristic of late stage capitalist work

He identified the problem, it cannot be ignored now.

But like a typical LDP political grifter he will say the solution is to subsidize companies to pay workers more, not use the power of government to ensure workers get a greater share of their work.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Same old same old. Nothing will change in Japan.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

What do we want?

Gradual change.

When do we want it?

In due course.

20 ( +25 / -5 )

Kishida actually announced something that makes sense-

"Japan is in a precarious situation that requires political leadership "

Got that right !

Of course it's been that way for the last 70+ years since Japan's defeat and surrender of the war they started.

I see Singapore as being the world's 3rd strongest economy not Japan.

Monitoring tourists coming to Japan with a tracing app ?

A vow to implement new capitalism ?

Hows he going to achieve that ?

By taking advantage of the wealth elderly population ?

Japan better get a move on and stop dragging your feet and play ball with the international community as a team player - if they will let you !

On the diplomatic front, Kishida is seeking to visit the United States for a summit with President Joe Biden by the year-end after the two had a brief conversation at a U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, earlier this month.

Only mentions the US, because that is all there is for the LDP in terms of forming alliances.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Former Defense Minister Gen Nakatani was named Kishida's special adviser on human rights issues. Nakatani is a leading advocate of introducing sanctions on foreign government officials believed to be human rights offenders, similar to those under the U.S. Magnitsky Act.

Hilarious! However, on second thought, given Japan's human rights record, I guess it kind of makes sense.

In the meantime reducing pensions . The National pension isn't enough to live on so I have to keep working although I am 71 years old.

18 ( +19 / -1 )

Not much diversity here.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

"vowed to encourage"

Repackaging Abe's "urges".... didnt work then, wont work now. Giving tax money (again) to businesses to increase wages, right, all along pocketing a chunk of change for "administrative" purposes!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

He also said within the year the government plans to conduct a study into monitoring tourists from abroad in preparation for easing Japan's border controls.

within the year the government plans to conduct a study into monitoring.....Yeaaaahh- expect the borders to be opened within the next 5 years...maybe

which by then there won't be a pension.

Kishida has vowed to implement a "new capitalism" that will put the world's third-largest economy on a growth track while redistributing wealth to the middle class.

I'm still laughing... Gotta give them credit for some of the best jokes out there!

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

Like day old cold pizza for breakfast.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

What an awful cabinet on display.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

I surely doubt it, because that would be the first time in history the ‘middle class’ would get more than it pays…lol No, let’s get realistic, they pay the handouts for their children themselves, have done that already or will have to pay it back later. And it’s less than paid into the pool, because many lower class children and also a few 960万円 per annum upper class families’ children also get quite some amount out of it.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Dear Mr. Kishida,

Take care of your own people first, "" redistributing wealth to the middle class"" is the only path towards prosperity.

The Japan people are well known for following the rules and working harder than the average, give them what they deserve and stop the steal , they pay their taxes, they give 110% and yet what do they see and got from the previous governments!? Briberies, Lies, Kickbacks, Waste of funds on worthless projects, Subsidies to companies run and owned buy government members or their partners, and so on.

STOP THE STEAL, and give back to those who support the system, and the ones who is RIPPING it off.

Really nice photo, just looking at that you can see that there is modernization for a government of 1928.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

"To prepare for another potential wave of infections, Kishida said the government will procure 1.6 million doses of orally-administered COVID-19 medicine as well as secure more hospital beds and begin giving out vaccine booster shots in December."

Early treatment with therapeutics is the name of the game to defeat COVID, based on India and U.S. States like Florida and Texas. Vaccinate the elderly and compromised, but for everyone else, vaxxes, especially if they require endless boosters, are not worth the risk.

"He also said within the year the government plans to conduct a study into monitoring tourists from abroad in preparation for easing Japan's border controls."

So, when, exactly is Japan opening up? 2 years from now? The business visa program is a joke, as the process is too burdensome except for the most determined travelers.

Pictures like this are invaluable for early childhood teachers, it easily conveys to children that people like this are to be avoided no matter what they promise. And emulating them will only distance you from what is considered a normal human condition. Leaving them devoid of friends except those of similar circumstance. Like a special protective wing in a jail.

Penguin suits are a bit overrated for a cabinet that precariously fumbling to make alliances and waiting to be told what to do next by the USA

Japan is in 'precarious' situation

Who was in power for most of the past 70 years? Who handeled this precarious situation from the beginning at the start of the pandemic ?

自民党!

How did you handle it? Abe no masuk and Abe no 10万円!Thanks for the history collectable and 10万

Is the pandemic over?

Absolutely not things need to be taken care of better to avoid a worse situation!

The government is set to finish mapping out stimulus measures next week to ease the impact of the pandemic, including cash handouts for households with children or struggling to make ends meet.

Good idea people with families and the needy do need help however who will pay for the stimulus to big business, not big business, how about a 30to 50%消費税?

How about big business paying for past stimulus who did not higher the pay to workers!

In the press conference, he vowed to encourage Japanese firms to raise pay including through tax incentives and focus on improving work conditions for care workers, nursery school staff and nurses in particular.

Good Start, however encourage, NO! DEMAND, and pass a law that creates penalty taxes for firms only to the extream to pay for the stimulus and not through 消費税!

NURSES, you really did a fine job supporting, thanking, and doing your best and utmost to help NURSES, DOCTORS, and people who worked on the front lines of the CORONA Virus putting their lives at risk and their families lives at risk by working longer hours and demand the utmost from them, and what was the 自民党THANKS, A STEEP PAY CUT! INSULTING!

Seriously 5 or 6 of these guys should be forced to retire immediately!

How can you be a forward thinking govt with cronies from a bygone era???

And the crowd goes mild…..

Wake us up when something productive actually happens.

They look like grooms at a British Royal Family wedding, interesting choice.

Kishida retains cabinet lineup; says Japan is in 'precarious' situation @japantoday:

No matter how precarious the situation is for Japan, Uncle Sam is always there to render a supporting hand to ensure it is secure and stable.

Where does the worry come from?

What is it?..

he vowed to encourage Japanese firms to raise pay including through tax incentives and focus on improving work conditions for care workers, nursery school staff and nurses in particular.

Most nursery school staff and many nurses will be public employees working for local governments. Their low pay is not the fault of "firms".

more than 30 trillion yen ($265 billion), later this year.

The package is expected to feature handouts of 100,000 yen in cash and vouchers to households with children aged 18 or younger, as well as resumption of the "Go To Travel" program in an effort to prop up the domestic tourism industry.

The money to parents adds up to 2 trillion, so is the remaining 28 trillion going to GoTo Travel and GoTo Eat? I don't know who Kyodo's translator is, but is relief spending supposed to be reported with words like "handouts" and "prop up"? Is the money given to farmers/ forestry/ construction/ fishing/ JAL/ single mothers .... "hand outs" to "prop them up"?

I will never understand why they have to dress as if they are going to a wedding. I get that it's a formal picture, but surely an official ministerial hakama and kimono would be more appropriate to represent the (conservative) Japanese government.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

By now most LDP members must have appeared on these steps in these costumes? After 70+ years you’d have to be a real looser not to have.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

This looks like the line up for an Agatha Christie tale.

Whodunnit?

(no-one here, we were all too busy dithering)

5 ( +5 / -0 )

They look like a bunch of puppets or clones with those lifeless expressions. This isn’t going to be a good future for the country

2 ( +2 / -0 )

what's with the 1935 costume pose?

A genuine rogues gallery - a country ruled by octogenarians, ah, similar to the USA.

half of them have their eyes closed... will the camera man hurry up and take the pic... grandpa needs his nap

3 ( +3 / -0 )

They are projecting a boring image so the young wont notice political matters. The youth need to start taking some sort of political interest soon!

Every time new government is presented I say to myself Japan is not democracy! All is decided within the party. But even the government was to be voted in the parliament they have the majority anyway so just anything goes. I know many Japanese that think critically and want necessary changes. Unfortunately there are many more that are afraid from anything new or the nationalist or the young that are tweeting how cute is Abe and not trying to see the reality. Well, I could go on and on...

Kishida retains cabinet lineup; says Japan is in 'precarious' situation

Well of course it is. The world keeps moving forward while Japan NEVER changes. We need some new black ships here..

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Yes a false democracy precariously titering on a precipice of commitment and corruption using the hardworking people of Japan's money and wealth to line their own pockets .

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Maybe Japan would not be in a precarious position if the government stopped its ‘vows and urges’ and actually did some real work?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

the guy just got into power, and the first things he says is that it's all bad, like blaming he inherited badness, and that it won't be his fault that it remains so.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

As Abe put on a Mario costume then it is no stretch of the imagination that Pikachu will be next!

Got to appeal to the younger voters somehow..

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Wow only three women in the cabinet. I guess it suits them well at least they didn't have to dress up as penguins for the photo.
