Just what Japan and the Asian region needs as the next so-called leader, another member of the ultranationalist Nippon Kaigi.

Suga is considering dissolving the House of Representatives in early October for a snap election after winning the race, other sources said, as the terms of lower house members will expire later that month.

Yeah.... maybe two weeks early. "Snap"

Suga is going to have a hard time beating Kishida.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Easy win for Kishida, not that it really matters much.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Kishida - more of the same LDP ineptness then.

17 ( +17 / -0 )

This is the best logical news I have heard all day!

[ Whatever...]

1 ( +1 / -0 )

At least Kishida appears to have a modicum of charisma and personality, unlike Suga. When Suga is giving a press conference, he looks like even he himself doesn't believe the words coming out of his mouth.

16 ( +18 / -2 )

Kishida is conniving lying slime bag, a perfect LDP candidate. I would go for Shigeru Ishiba, but he is too straight forward and honest for LDP, they would never make him a PM!!!

13 ( +17 / -4 )

Since we will almost surely get the LDP after the next election, could we at least get the "moderate" rightwinger Kishida. At least he doesn't go to Yasukuni.

If not Koshida, could we at least please have someone Nikai does not pick. Isn't Japan embarrassed that a single person chooses the prime minister?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

The so-called 3A group seems to be in the ascendancy now - the failure Abe, the Nazi admirer Aso and the astonishingly corrupt Akari Amari. Kishida is their puppet.

On the other side is the octogenarian Nikai, whose insane Go To Campaign spread coronavirus all over Japan last autumn.

Ishiba, the best candidate by far, has no chance. Japanese politics is a horrorshow.

Another member of Nippon Kaigi... He himself stated (I think) 10 years ago that he fully agreed with the rhetoric of Nippon Kaigi. In addition to extreme nationalism, their rhetoric is also revisionism. Maybe some people think revisionism is okay, or maybe there's nothing wrong with it. If you are European, try to imagine revisionism in today's Germany and the type of people who hang around.

I blame the US occupation authorities, personally. They let lots of war criminals back into power instead of having them all hanged or leaving them in prison, the CIA funded their election campaigns, and letting them whitewash Japan's wartime history was presumably seen as a better option than socialists, communists and trade unions running the country.

Pity he's a Nippon Kaigi nut just like the rest of them.

A little step for that party, but a very big one for the country. At least anyone else is fine, Kishida, you, me, and the challenger surely can a bit more than only trying correctly reading outhanded papers and miss that too or bringing the same few phrases again and again like safe secure safe secure….in addition he is not so much rural biased in character, but also even has some experiences in bi- or multilateral international negotiations from his former post as a minister.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Obscure Kishida is running the race only for a reason that it will help him in the future race.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Where's Abe?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Kishida, who heads a faction of the party, is planning to announce his candidacy on Thursday, the sources said.

He's still short of support both within LDP Diet lawmakers as well as local chapters. Besides Kishida has no proven record or specific course of action with regard to the corona policy. He's invisible in public.

So far, Sanae Takaichi, known as a conservative member of the LDP who is close to Abe, and LDP policy chief Hakubun Shimomura have expressed willingness to run in the presidential election.

For candidacy, both needs official support or recommendations by minimal 20 LDP Diet lawmakers. I'm afraid that they will have hard time.

Suga remains strong and most likely to get re-elected so long as Nikai, Abe and Aso back him. However, the LDP under Suga will face a big challenge in the upcoming lower house elections.

Another old dude. I’m sure he’ll bring progressive ideas and new insight. Hahaha

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Suga is finished.

Kishida is used precisely to dump him.

Now it's up to Yukio Edano.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

sigh another useless puppet.

however I will be SO happy to never see another photo of Suga's dead fish face again.

Pretty sure these are basically the same people.

How cool would it to be to let the people of Japan vote on a PM? Imagine that.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Back room dealing as always. Trading debts and favours. I'll vote for you as PM, and then you put me as FM, all the way down the line.

Nothing liberal, certainly not democratic, and party is just a front for the old men at the back.

But Japanese get the governent that they pay for, or rather contribute money to.

Awesome, another affiliate of the officially self claimed civic group de-facto an ultra nationalist cult Nippon Kaigi will run as the new Bafuku for the country.

Another fossil with deep routes and connection politics from generations, unfortunately nothing will change or will get worse.

Japan as a group mentality will value the final goal more as the single person.

Abe as Aso,Suga and this Kishida are affiliated with the same cult and have a clear idea of how "beautiful Japan" should revert to the past, after all Nippon Kaigi states that the revisionism of the constitution bonding a strong military with a high moral and patriotism for the country are a unique thing, now I wonder how many of you expats which includes me regret the choice to make this place our home, facts it will never be.

And in the end they will reach their final goal and then things will become a nightmare for all of us.

I just hope that the democratic forces in Japan with Edano will have enough voice and rights to stop this madness.

But most importantly this is up to the Japanese voter.

Kono got the shaft?

Kono put his own head in a noose by agreeing to become the vaccine Czar.

Spoilt for choice as usual.

Now it's up to Yukio Edano.

He needs a clear message and more candidates. I'd say he needs more media attention too but I don't know if he'd benefit much from that. He's not exactly got Barack Obama-level star power.

Ridiculous one party state

1 ( +1 / -0 )

We do not need a man who keeps reading given paper instead of making speech from his heart. We want a real "Leader" instead of "Reader"

Just what Japan and the Asian region needs as the next so-called leader, another member of the ultranationalist Nippon Kaigi.

The US, UK, Austr, India, Canada, EU and nearly all Asian nations have no problem with the Nippon Kaigi. But they all have a problem with the ultranationalist CCP.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Current PM election system is not democratic in true sense. One day, with "My Number Card", we should be able to choose our PM through a "Low-Cost-Internet-Voting-System" so that we can skip the current non-transparent system.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

This is LDP sabotaging itself.

I wonder why people are against this.

blue

Japan probably dodged a bullet with Kono falling. The guy is clearly a western educated stooge.

I am even curious what the heck is the problem of Nippon Kaigi.

CCP propaganda spread by Wumaos.

Continuously attacking Japan as "militarist" is part of China's warfare and cover of their own military expansion and ultranationism which is threatening the region and the world.

Doesn't matter who runs when the game of musical chairs is over and one man (the woman has no chance) is in the top seat -- apathy will win the elections and the LDP remain in power to screw things up even more as the opposition changes their name again.

Hrm. I'm not saying the CCP are my favourite people but this comes across sounding a bit paranoid. Fact is, nothing I've read from any source makes Nippon Kaigi sound fantastic either. In fact I suspect that if they got their way there wouldn't be much difference between the PRC and the kind of regime they wanted to create.
