Japan's middle class had already died in the 1990s. Very few people here consider as true middle class in the American or European style. Even the upper middle class and wealthy class are feeling the crushing rock from tax hike and stagnant economy. Most of them have either fled Japan or planning to flee Japan. I personally met a Japanese couple, who descended from a line of noble samurai, sold their real estate business in Japan to make a new life in California. They not only enjoyed their new life greatly among Asian American communities but they fervently hate the J-govt bureaucracy. The primary reason is the crushing inheritance tax and other types of taxes; of course, there is also the stagnant economy.

The problem gets so bad that CNBC had an article on the issue. It finally gets an international recognition after less than a decade of "Nihonjiron" propaganda from J-govt and LDP cronies.

BTW, here in Kansai, everyone I have spoken to believe Tokyoites should be banned here. People check number plates. She needs to wake up.

This scenario for the ambitious Koike is highly likely alongside the rising rumor of a possible snap election for the lower house within a year. Eligible Tokyoite voters should take it into account (but perhaps, Koike could be the good choice as an interim "bridge" governor giving more time to find the next serious one fulfilling the 4-year term).

Koike received votes from all sides, right, left, and center: Ruling LDP (70%), Komeito (90%), Non Affiliates (50%), Constitutional Democratic Party (30%), Communist Party (20%).

At first, I thought that she would definitely win, considering the polls. But now, with cases spiking in Tokyo, I’m not sure. I mean one if her saving graces is the fact that she does have 21 candidates running against her to split the anti-Koike vote.

She's got a landslide victory as expected, winning more than 3.5 million votes (60%). When she won the first term 4 years ago, she won 2.9 milling votes. So she was expected to win about 3 million. But she exceeded the expectation.

we foreigners shouldn't give a crap because we have no voice in what the government does, so stop wasting your time and opinions on things you can't change.

I just voted for Koike. The other candidates look crazy. Especially the one dressed as Dracula.

Just moved to Tokyo this Saturday so I’m looking forward to not voting in the election. Lost my job due to corona virus but happy to be back in Tokyo working (at NOVA)
