NHK are avoiding any metion of this, the regime does not like being spurred by the population.

Cricky - the 9:00pm news last night focussed on it for a while.
But there were 2 glaring bows to the regime in hte report.
First, they gave extensive time to the losers and their supporters. Esp we heard from young supporters of the LDP backed Sakima who actually worked on his campaign trail. They said we are also worried about the bases problem but we are concerned for the economy our future. On the other hand, the main supporters of Tamaki were presented as the elderly who can't forget the horrors of the war. There were almost no young supporters of Tamaki shown - giving the impression that the LDP and Sakima were trying to help the youthful future vs the oldie peace-niks living in the past. Contrary to that impression of course is the fact that Tamaki and his supporters embody all elements of Okinawan society, not in the least the young and the economy.
2ndly, They never presented any comments from Abe. Very strange for one of the most important local elections in recent times, where the topic of national security is raised almost daily concerning the sdf & us military bases. Obviously Abe's PR machine didn't want to tarnish his image with a loss. Of course he did make a small comment elsewhere, but it was very noticeable that NHK chose not to air anything.
Actually it looked like lots of the material presented had been pre-prepared with the expectation of an LDP victory.
Sontaku.

Could never weaken it enough (until the LDP holds no power)!
Yep. And any of the media that speaks against the LDP will lose their credentials...

Browney good points, I watched TV but missed this story, it happens. Generally I try to see but I do make mistakes. The LDP are no longer relevant. It's up to us to watch the inevitable decline. But who is going to step up? Democracy does need a choice. Where is the choice?

The LDP was expected to lose in Okinawa.

LDP offers nothing new. Only age old Japanese Neoconservatism.

Facts defeat you on that slander. No one loses their credentials for have opposing opinions on the leading party. Asahi and Mainichi do it every day.

Nope. The facts are in regards to the treatment of the media that speak against the LDP are outlined quite well in the link below. Asahi and Mainichi (and all of the media houses) know how far the ropes and stay within the boundary. True domestically-based criticism of the LDP was quashed back in 2016.

What exactly does corruption have to do with silencing the media? Besides, how do we know exactly how corrupt the current government is when they have no one to answer to or hold them accountable? Moot, strawman argument...
