"There has been no apology..."

Don't expect one. TIJ.

The WareWare Nihonjin mentality subsumes all. The contrast with Australia, where governments and the people are on the same page about respecting Aboriginal self-determination couldn’t be more stark.

It's the height of arrogance for the Wajin ( Yamato) ( a horrible misnomer) to abrogate themselves the power to " Recognize " the aboriginal indigenous owners of the land.

I repeat, the Japanese committed genocide against the Ainu, in fact they even had it in newspapers as to how many they have to kill to eradicate them ( things like 500 more to go ! )

The demeaning spectacle of dragging the Ainu to Louisiana ( and London?) to exhibition where they exhibited them as " Lesser " people e.t.c . This " recognition " still reeks of a superiority over a people who are, were and would have been capable to lead their own lives probably even better than the hell they have had to endure.

And I repeat a G.E.N.O.C.I.D.E was comitted against the Ainu. No doubt about it.

Yup. Hollow words. Just written to make it seem to the international community that the really care. We know better.

They are just a interest group demanding money.

Nowhere in the article does it mention a demand for money. Perhaps they are - can you present evidence that this is their overriding aim? And perhaps they are deserving of it too.

I think that they want their ethnicity recognised, and not subsumed into the wider Japanese culture.

As far as I see what they care for is tourist money to be spread. Give them Ainu a bone. Sad to see this government’s attitude towards their supposed people.

Almost completely erased and still being exploited. What a shame, what a shambles.

Japan and human rights should not be used in the same sentence unless the sentence includes the word, breech.

You better believe it. It's the same with the Igorot of the Philippines, the New Zealand Maoris, Australian Aborigines, Laplanders, Native Americans (2 continents!), the original people of Madagascar, on every continent by every race - pretty much. The original inhabitants are forced to 'get with the program' (New Order) of the pirating raping invasive thieves.

It's the same sad sick story. Mister Rogers says, 'Can you say "GENOCIDE"?'.

„ A 2017 Hokkaido survey lists the Ainu population as slightly more than 13,000, but some estimates put it as high as 250,000.“

So who is Ainu? They did intermarry since the opening up of Hokkaido in Meiji age. That will account for the huge difference in population numbers.

Being a stretched out country how many Okinawas are there? And that’s a much more strategical location these days.

First Nations ('red' Native Americans) are the largest racial minority in Canada and they are treated like trash. I like Canada a lot but I've been to many of their 'reservations'/communities and they are horrible. They don't even have casinos or historical resorts to make money. In that regard and in many ways, they're treated even worse than in my country the U.S.A. And that's BAD.

they want official recognition for what they truly are, culturally and racially: the original Native Japanese.

They were not the original natives of Japan--not even of Hokkaido. There were many distinct cultural groups before the Ainu culture.

Anyway, I've read some of the plans for the complex they're making in Shiraoi: The "Symbolic Space for Ethnic Harmony" is what they're calling it. Lots of nods to cultural harmony and education, but it looks like it will be a big theme park. At least Ainu will be involved in creating and running it, or that's the plan, anyway.

Over 80% of Japanese came from China. Just saying...

If I recall, the Ainu are classified as a Caucasian group (facial features - shape of the eyes, nose, lips) but certainly not white. Their men have excessive facial and body hair unlike the 'Oriental' people who now dominate Japan today. There's been intermarriage and such but it looks very clear that the Ainu don't want to be exploited any further and they ain't asking for money - but they want official recognition for what they truly are, culturally and racially: the original Native Japanese.

Boshit the right to self-determination. Say that to colonizer Australia.

Humans have historically been very violent to other humans, but at least this represents an effort to do things differently, and better.
