Fitting that he wouldn't attend.

The South Korean athletes are already doing a great job of showing the world how childish and immature they are with their boorish behavior and hostile attitude towards the host nation of Japan. Latest news is that the entire South Korean entourage brought their own foods and chefs due to fear of radiation from Fukushima products. And I certainly do not think this will be the end of it, the odds are very high that the South Korean athletes will do something provocative against Japan before, during, and after any event they compete in. Unfortunately, the world will condone this behavior by South Koreans.

9 ( +29 / -20 )

These Games are a disgrace from the beginning. That set aside, I hate the immature way that Japan and South Korea treat each other. In spite of historical grievances, both nations should focus on nowadays and modern threats that both share in common. As for example:

Seoul accused Tokyo of weaponizing trade and threatened to terminate a military intelligence-sharing agreement with Tokyo

That's what I meant, that doesn't help. If the Olympics represent anything, it's peace, and threatening to cut a military joint operation between two countries threatened by the same nation seems childish to me, even more over the "improper" silly comments that a Japanese official could have made about Moon.

Nations need leaders without so much of self-centrism.

Olympics was expected to be event for diplomacy, by now not that effective.

The war is over, can't we just get along?

10 ( +19 / -9 )

Ridiculous! ! !

Moon is responsible for the worst relations between Japan and S. Korea in decades.

Moon is solely responsible for backing away from the 2015 Comfort Woman Deal.

Moon is responsible for telling Comfort Women not to accept, not to take the deal. He made promises If he became President of S.Korea he could get them a better deal with more money.

Moon is responsible for telling South Korean Courts to back away from deals signed with Japan and rule in favor of Koreans. Forget the deals signed, payments already received.

Moon Loves Kim and North Korea. Willing to do anything! Anything for his Korean Dream! Reunification!

Moon is getting closer to China.

Has not Joined Quad Alliance.

Does not support Taiwan.

Does not support Hong Kong.

Japan recently was threatened with Nuclear destruction by China for supporting Taiwan. Where is South Korea????

Hiding becoming rich, Playing all sides!!!

15 ( +30 / -15 )

@ReasonandWisdomNippon

Does not support Taiwan.

Korean support of Taiwan is behind closed doors in secrecy.

For example, Taiwanese military cadets are trained in Korea.

Taiwanese submarine hull is being designed by Korean engineers, who had to flee Taiwan after a Taiwanese lawmaker leaked their whereabouts on Parliament floor and made them the target of Chinese assassination attempt.

So yes Korea supports Taiwan, but in secrecy.

-12 ( +12 / -24 )

The Korean president made the right decision not to come to Japan. You’re not welcome here. Stay home and watch the Olympics on TV.

11 ( +21 / -10 )

Who wanted him to come, anyway? I doubt even he wanted to.

12 ( +20 / -8 )

The lame duck Moon has failed to exploit the Olympic opportunity to meet the North leader Kim, then to PM Suga. Perhaps the diplmat(s "lewd remark" may be right as the President is busy on doing something himself at home.

1 ( +14 / -13 )

There's nothing wrong with wanting to have meetings with foreign leaders in order to improve international relations, but to make such meetings conditional based on the Olympics is the wrong time and place.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

Meeting would be a waste of time. Any deals reached will be undone by the next President of Korea.

12 ( +18 / -6 )

So will the Japanese coast guard ships protecting the Olympic venues be forced to remove their flags? All their ships use that flag.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

"The Korean president made the right decision not to come to Japan. You’re not welcome here"

I can understand how you feel. There is a lot of anger in Japan towards South Korea. The long list of disrespectful and mean spirted actions directed at Japan from South Korea goes on and on. The  latest being the behavior of Korean Athletes towards the people of Fukushima is just unforgivable. Soma Hiroshi should get a promotion.

1 ( +14 / -13 )

Japanese brought their own food at the Peongchang Olympics saying that they didn't trust the food provided by the Koreans. The Japanese worried about food being contaminated with banned drugs.

Every country has a right to bring their own food since athletes need specific diets. At least Korean politicians didn't make an issue like the Japanese have done

-10 ( +10 / -20 )

During the huge earthquake in 2011 Korea diverted fuel shipments that were headed for Korea to Japan. If Korea had not done that Japan would have had a cold winter since a lot of Japan's power stations were off line. I don't think Korea will do that again.

-5 ( +11 / -16 )

Japanese brought their own food at the Peongchang Olympics saying that they didn't trust the food provided by the Koreans.

Really? Do you have a link?

2 ( +10 / -8 )

Nothing can strengthen the idea that Korea and Japan are siblings than the 'neurotic little sisters' tone of their diplomatic exchanges. Every possible little otherwise innocuous thing is looked for and, when found, magnified to a point where, for an individual, psychological counseling at the least or even commitment might be a salient and rational response. And the saddest thing is that these two long time vassals of the United States could, if they could only find a cure for their pathological sibling rivalry, join together and, united, would become yet another 'major power' in the Western Pacific and would be able to throw off the American slave collars and chart their own course vis-à-vis China, the U.S., Russia, or any other pugnacious state. But constant bickering is more satisfying to them than their own national interests and both bear the shame of long term military subjugation and occupation by a psychopathic State who would abandon them or use them as Human shields in a heartbeat if that seemed best for that State(s). Where's the sanity here, guys?

-14 ( +3 / -17 )

Just typical that Moon is snubbing the Olympics (which is a trainwreck and complete disaster, but that is beside the point).

The Korean athletes have been acting in a very aggressive, hostile manner in the village, even erecting anti-Japan wartime slogans. They have absolutely been ordered to do this by the anti-Japan Moon regime.

I bet Moon makes a beeline for Beijing 2022 in a few months - and is his close ally Xi's honored guest. Shameful.

10 ( +19 / -9 )

Japanese brought their own food at the Peongchang Olympics saying that they didn't trust the food provided by the Koreans.

Very typical Korean perception. Unlike KOC which openly and officially prohibits their athletes to eat foods served by Japan, JOC has been serving typical Japanese foods by the requests from their athletes since London2012, Rio2016.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

oldman_13: " Latest news is that the entire South Korean entourage brought their own foods and chefs due to fear of radiation from Fukushima products."

How did I know you would LEAP onto a post involving Korea to be the first to post and say the kind of things you often say. How is it childish to bring your own food when the government of Japan, which has denied any causal link to an increase in cancer in children around the plant in Fukushima and the nuclear meltdown, dumped nuclear waste into the ocean, wants to extend the lives of out-of-date reactors, says they will feed the produce to athletes to "Prove it's safe"? And when you have a diplomats to South Korea from Japan saying Kim is "masturbating himself if he thinks he will meet with Suga" and then the Japanese government only "sternly warns" said diplomats and won't remove them from their post?

"Fitting that he wouldn't attend."

Precisely, but not for the reasons you mention.

-8 ( +11 / -19 )

ReasonandWisdomNippon: "Moon is responsible for the worst relations between Japan and S. Korea in decades."

Actually, Japan is... from whence they started until now. Period. SK didn't colonize Korea, did they? Nor did they do anything that followed. Have they REACTED to what Japan has done? Sure. Who wouldn't? But in Japan they can barely manage to hold a tiny art exhibition even discussing the possibility of wartime cruelty unless it's all about bombings of Japan, and can NEVER mention atrocities it has committed -- especially not sexual slavery. And as I mentioned above, Moon is not coming in part because of what a Japanese diplomat said about him just the other day, Japan labelling the clearly Korean islands as Japanese on Olympic maps, etc.

"Moon is getting closer to China."

Hahaha. Classic! I guess you've missed how things have been in the preparation for the Olympics here, with many nations pointing out how behaviour and policing of even the Olympic village -- banning people from going outside and even checking via computer chips in their vaccine cards or whatever to see if they've gone outside, asking shops to report them -- or demanding banks report and stop funding bars that don't close down at the recommended hours, etc.

You're quite right, they don't. It's highly amusing that the Korean person knows more about the Japanese Coast Guard than the Japanese person.

So it was OK for Japan to bring their own food to Pyeongchang Olympics, but when Korea does its a no no? BTW, the US still bans Fukushima products.

The banner? Why should the Japanese care? After all, they tell the Koreans to move on from events 70 years ago. Yet Japan still whines about events from several centuries ago, not to mention playing the victim card with the anniversary of the atomic bombs.

Masturbator? Nah, seems more appropriate to describe Suga who is fixated on serving himself and foremost only, and not the common people.

Maybe the Japanese should stop being so petty, then perhaps the Koreans will respect and move on.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

Back on topic please.

If It looks to your eyes that Japan has been dealing with this 'neurotic little sister' at the same level, you had better get rid of your coloured spectacles.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

A bit off topic but

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said no decision has been made on whether Soma will be removed from his current position.

I noticed this from Kato also when was Health minister that he loves to emphasize when decisions haven't been made. Useless tool... that's why Suga loves him.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Did Japanese athletes protest at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018?

Not just 2018 but 2008 Olympics. The Japanese media was out in full force saying how crap those games will be, and that those games will be cancelled. Heck, they even forced other nations to have their training bases in Japan and travel to Pyeongchang and Beijing for the competition only.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

So it was OK for Japan to bring their own food to Pyeongchang Olympics, but when Korea does its a no no? BTW, the US still bans Fukushima products.

IOC prohibits each countries to bring in and set up food servicing area within Olympic village. So was 2012 London, 2016 Rio, Japanese foods were served outside the village at about 5min walking distance. This time it is all the same. Serving in the village, outside the village, suit yourself. Most foodstuff was purchased there from SKorean wholesaler to serve Japanese food when Pyeongchang2020

No. Taiwan's new subs are based on the Dutch submarines the ROC now operate (which are themselves based very closely on the last US diesel boats, the Barbel Class) but updated with a modern US periscope, combat system and weapons. There is no ROK input into their design. Retired Japanese experts have been invited to participate in their design.

I am not sure of the accuracy of this. I know for a fact the Australian team are supplying their own food for their approximately 500 athletes, for the duration of the Games. No one is permitted to eat in the village cafeteria/restaurants.

I imagine many other nations are supplying their own food to their athletes, too. Certainly not just South Korea.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Why don't you read straight from Taiwanese sources.

It was the Koreans who designed the Taiwanese submarine hull in secrecy, until a moronic KMT legislator blew their cover on the parliament floor, forcing them to return to Korea due to threats on their lives.

A Japanese diplomat Soma was quite right. South Korea and Moon have been only wrestling with themselves.

Japan has kept solid stance and refused to deal with this 'neurotic little sister' who has been demanding too much even for the conditions to come to Japan despite he is not welcomed at all. After all, all Moon has in his mind is to play up some gesture to show US that SK did it's best to recover the relation as ordered by Biden but Japan crashed the chance. In that sense he thinks his mission was complete.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Japan-Korea bickering is like 2 couples in a divorce court each trying to get the upper hand with any trivial matter they can accuse the other of.

These are the "LEADERS" of the free and democratic World. LOL. They can't even be civilized to each other, so what do the rest of the "UNDEMOCRATIC" countries expect from these pretenders and illusionists, but garbage, a boat load of patronizing statements and full sack of hate. They are incapable to lead the world ... but I guess fish stinks from the head.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Although for totally different reasons, but this decision is of course the only appropriate one. One should have wished, the Olympics mafia, their pseudo sports entourage and Japan in general would have skipped that virus super spreading event too.

Outright blind support and allegiance without any rational thinking is very toxic and dangerous and has led to conflicts, wars and genocides. Let me tell you, when it does happen, some of you will be in the thick of it and fanning the flame because you forfeited your ability to think and left yourself open to be manipulated. You can say you hate this or that nationality but if you were left jwith someone of that nationality that you hated just the two of you and you were confronted by another specie from another planet I bet you there won't be any hatred but see each other like brothers and fight together against the different specie. We all beathe the same air and just separated by invincible boundaries. Many a staunchest nationalist have died taking nothing along with them.

Total crap. Here is the true story:

The Koreans stepped up and helped Japan in time of need. Why would you call 52 million USD in donation crap? The Japanese are not ungrateful people. Do not attempt to smother the good will between the two countries.

South Koreawas among the first foreign emergency rescue teams consisting of 5 rescuers and 2 rescue dogs who arrived in Japan on March 12, while another team of 102 rescuers arrived 2 days later. The government, corporations, media, community groups including survivors of comfort women lead campaigns for donation. By 22 March, the government announced that the confirmed donation reached 58.1 billion KRW (52 million USD). In addition to human aid, Korea sent boric acid to weaken nuclear reactions and power sources for electricity. Many provinces have offered aid as well. Gyeonggi-do offered US$1 million, and raised additional aid. The South Korean consulate staffs in Sendai were crucial in escorting a Croatian citizen, Vinko Hut Kono, safely to the Akita Airport.

The above is good example of "neurotic little sister's temper tantrum" described by someone else or you might call it Hwapyung as well. Looking back, how many of historical SK presidents had promised "never refer to the past, never bring up this same issues again, all for future-oriented relationship between 2 nations"? only to end up as empty promises. Now This neurotic little sister have broken two major international promises, and even Korean Naval ship directed their FC Laser antenna at Japan's patrol plane= a declaration of hostility.

Who would possibly blame Japan for changing it's stance toward this neurotic little sister.

Historical fabrications are pointed out as they are. What must be clarified are done as such, and what mus be rejected and ignored are done as appropriately. No more cope with endless temper tantrum. That is all.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is politicly grandstanding.

Moon Jae-in cannot resist the need/urge to gloat at Japan pandemic predicament.

"The Tokyo Olympics are a festival of peace for people around the world, and we hope that Japan holds the Olympics safely and successfully," said Park Soo Hyun, Moon's spokesperson, reading a statement on TV. "We also hope our athletes, despite the difficult conditions, fully display the skills they have developed in competition and return home healthy."

Every word is laced with poisonous contempt, sieving out of every orifice.

It's amazing to me how much Japan pays attention to Korean politics. Koreans don't reality focus much on Japan for their presidential elections. Sure Japanese related issues are a factor in Korea but Koreans are much more focused on domestic issues.

When Japan removed South Korea from its whitelist two years ago, Koreans marched into the streets in protest. One group tried to break into the Japanese embassy in Busan. Gas stations refused to refuel Japanese cars. The district of Gyeonggi proposed putting stickers on Japanese products in all classrooms essentially stating, “This device was made by a war criminal”. Pretending South Koreans don’t pay attention to Japan is just delusional.

Why don't you read straight from Taiwanese sources.

Do you have it in English? I cannot read Mandarin and my wife only reads new Pinyon, not traditional script. There is nothing in the western press suggesting any Korean involvement. The South Korean subs are nothing like the new Taiwanese sub as the Koreans are using German designs that are very different from the Taiwanese boat. Western sources say the boat is a derivative of the two Zwaardvis class boats currently in service with the Taiwanese Navy updated with X planes at the stern and a more modern conning tower. Comparing their internal layouts that seems to be the case. The Zwaardvis class were in turn Dutch built copies of the Barbel Class, the US Navy's last diesel submarine class that were well regarded. Supposedly two European firms, two US firms, an Indian firm and a Japanese firm submitted designs to Taiwan from which one was chosen. Lockheed-Martin will perform the systems integration and provide the combat management system. A Gibraltar based firm, Garrno Ltd is retained for oversight and supervision of construction of key parts of the sub. Here is yet another source mentioning Japanese participation in the form of retired engineers from Kawasaki and Mitsubishi.

Do you have it in English?

Google Translate works pretty well nowadays. The closest English language article was a rumor reported last year, until actually confirmed on the Taiwanese parliament floor in a major fiasco in April of this year. Fortunately, the Korean engineers' work on the hull design was mostly done at the time of hurried departure and they finished up from Korea remotely.

https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2020/09/is-south-korea-involved-in-taiwans-indigenous-submarine-project/

A British engineer also participating in the sub program wasn't as lucky, he was found dead in a murky circumstance and many suspect he was assassinated.

Unfortunately that idiot Soma just had to open his big mouth. With that one remark, he gave Moon all the excuse he could ever hope for to "legitimately" boycott the opening ceremony. Now, all Moon has to do is say, "see, those Japanese are the bad guys, they don't want to properly atone for their evil past, I'm not going to waste my time going to Japan."
