What's the bet Abe comes out of retirement before the next election to avoid the LDP copping a shellacking

23 ( +24 / -1 )

For me the surprising part is that almost a third of the people still support this government, I honestly wonder what kind of disaster would be necessary for these people to change their opinion.

36 ( +39 / -3 )

Even with another Fukushima, support rate would still at 30%, an incredible number of blind people or dinosaur lovers?

20 ( +24 / -4 )

The approval rating for Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's cabinet has fallen 4.1 points from a month earlier to a record-low 31.8 percent

The 31.8 percent were the ones that correctly identified Suga as the TV talent known for being the fall guy and doing a lot of sit-ups.

Thumb me up if you think they are planning Abe part 3…..

20 ( +24 / -4 )

This is actually pretty funny? Why? Well, I'm sure many of you would find it strange that I am defending him but the people who disapprove of his handling of the Olympics and COVID are defying his orders regarding state of emergency. He is telling people what they need to do and no one is listening. So how can one disapprove of him while ignoring his requests/suggestions regarding what we need to do?

If you want to help with COVID, STAY HOME FOR A WEEK OR TWO.

If you don't want the Olympics, STOP BUYING INTO IT AND STOP VISITING VENUES.

And to the city offices, STOPPING OFFERING DISCOUNTS TO YOUR RESIDENCE TO HOTELS, ONSENS and OTHER PLACES OF INTEREST.

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

Really? I'm genuinely surprised it's this high!

15 ( +15 / -0 )

Cabinet? That low value is most probably assigned to only one or a very few there.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Who are the 30 per cent here? It's not bar owners, for sure. And it's not anyone who can see the direction in which he's driving the country.

Maybe it's older people who've had their shot and are sitting on a nice pension, and therefore are operating on the Japanese version of "I've got mine, so (bleep) you".

8 ( +9 / -1 )

I'm sure it's much lower than that. My wife and her family would throw him and Koike under a bus.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Amazing - with all around pathetic performance still 31% population supporting him - just wow!!!’

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Suga is too incompetent prime minister as a leader. Election is coming soon in September. He will not be a leader of LDP and never a prime minister again.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Kinda odd for a man who (according to one of our esteemed posters, whose "partner"'s brother apparently "personally knows" Suga) is a "dynamic" man who "works tirelessly 7 days a week".

Heck. I work five days a week and never more than eight hours a day, and I've never had a word of complaint from my bosses.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I think Suga san is the best Prime Minister Japan has ever experienced. That's not saying much of any of them howsoever.

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

How is it even above 5%?

Who’s voting positively in their favor?

Their wives? Their yes men?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Just freaking unbelievable.

It's the classic domestic violence routine. The police arrive, but by that point it's already at "he didn't mean to hit me, officer. He's a good man. He can change".

(Tragically I think I have to actually explain this, as it seems like any posts which use analogy or other figures of speech get deleted for being too abstract / off-topic: this is a comparative example. The abusive husband represents the LDP, and the victim represents the voters. The police represent the election. The abusive husband abusing his wife is like the LDP governing in an incompetent fashion. The wife ringing the police is like the voters giving the government bad figures in the polls, but finally telling the police that they think the government's heart is in the right place even though it regularly slaps them around. I hope this now makes things clearer and thank you warmly for your forbearance).

This was clear from the beginning. Even without a coronavirus or the Olympics, his term was doomed to failure. In Japan, we love radical politicians as much as possible, the louder and more extreme in opinion the better, and people love them all the more. Suga is a moderate in speech and that makes him the perfect candidate to lose and be remembered as a weak politician. And it's easier to blame a weak politician.

For me the surprising part is that almost a third of the people still support this government, I honestly wonder what kind of disaster would be necessary for these people to change their opinion.

See: U.S., trump. No disaster too disastrous...

There is no excuse for suddenly "remembering" after almost 60 years and accusing someone (whether the accusation is based on truth or fabricated I leave aside for the moment). This almost seems like an attempt to get revenge or simply to make oneself seen.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

I really fear this is all a ploy for Abe to come back.

Suga is indecisive but Abe would be disastrous.

And yet....

Asked which party they plan to vote for under the proportional representation system in the upcoming House of Representatives election, 38.4 percent of the respondents said the LDP and 12.2 percent said the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.

Just freaking unbelievable.

Well, some of these people will be voting for the local politician, not the party. Well-established LDP Diet members with extensive local support networks and deep pockets can and sometimes do leave the party, and still get elected.

Other people literally don't have much of a choice. For instance, where I live none of the parties I might vote for are likely to have a candidate, or there might be some independent conservative running and there's point for LDP supporters in switching to another conservative. I also suspect that LDP supporters know it doesn't matter if prime ministers come and go all the time because the party pork barrel machine will keep them well supplied with taxpayer cash no matter what.

The approval rating for Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's cabinet has fallen 4.1 points from a month earlier to a record-low 31.8 percent and 65.1 percent of the public do not want Suga to remain in his post, a Kyodo News survey showed Monday.

Ah, OK , this is why Suga suddenly thinks the COVID numbers are now 'alarming'. Makes sense now.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

cracaphat

Yukio Edano of course.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Suga is just a little puppet of Shinzo abe! After him Kishi (Defense Minister) will take over the post of Prime Minister, his trusted little brother!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That number appears too high.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

As some have said, I bet Abe is just lurking in the shadows.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

31.8 or 13.8? What a joke!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

With respect to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Suga san was never remotely prime ministerial material.

Shepherded in by the factional dynamics of LDP institutionalized organization of J-politics/politicians that declare membership identities.

Notably Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai, leader of the LDP Shisuikai faction is the king-maker.

No skills required, no selection process, just entitlement, the next in line.

The scary bit is whose next in line?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

And I thought Abe was boring. Guess I was wrong. Suga is as incompetent as the DPJ leaders were. No personality, no charisma, nothing. And on top of that, he has no political leverage. He's literally a ghost in a shell.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Maybe it's time for Japan to have a leader who is under 60. The younger Koizumi would be a better option. I only live here and pay taxes but, hey, I'm not Japanese so I can't vote.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"why do you support the government: "

"First: No particular reason (特に理由はない)"

I am really hoping these people just stay home on Election Day and watch something on tv instead...(interesting or not interesting).

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The younger Koizumi would be a better option.

Oh god. Is this all 120 million can come up with? Don't tell me, he's going to make politics sexy.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

It is unfortunate for the Japanese people that their leader is chosen by the Diet and not by a direct vote of the people.

In a democracy, having a leader elected by vote of the citizens ensures that the leader will be responsive to the needs of the people rather than the party in power.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Maybe the 30% who are said to support Suga were flummoxed by the question:

"Is it not untrue that you do or do not support PM Suga?"

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Present Japan's Suga government doesn't something that should be done or can do as government.

Number of new cases per million in Japan are far beyond surrounding countries such as South Korea or Taiwan.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I forgot to suggest a renaming or localized name for the Peter principle. lol

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@marcelito

It was a joke but not written well.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

30% only seems high if we don't consider that they are predominantly supported in the countryside, which is, generally, much less affected by both the pandemic and the games.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I can't believe it's that high. He was supplicant to the IOC and he has made a total hash of the Covid response. I cannot believe that anyone would support this incompetent buffoon.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

His support in Japan,is probably a little more than the Taliban in Afghanistan, only thing the Taliban is running ,now is their mouths, they have outstanding bounties on their heads, that why they had not emerge in Kabul ,yet, nobody is running the government, countries are suspending aid, they have no source of income, beside drugs, they need others to legitimate their rule ,without this they are sitting ducks for a hellfire missile Google Most Wanted Taliban Google Quetta Shura
