Abe made huge mistake by allowing the dispute to be exploited. China had asked Abe to recognize the dispute and move on. It is too late now and I am afraid the Chinese offer is off table.

For the future generations, Japan must choose now. There is no alternatives.

"Earlier Friday, Suga also held talks by phone with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed his intention to work together to achieve a "free and open Indo-Pacific" aimed at checking China's maritime assertiveness."

The only way for Japan to contribute to the free and open Indo-Pacific is to have striking capabilities that can reach India.

"We did not discuss (Xi's) possible visit to Japan," Suga said

Before being asked, Suga went ahead to comment it above. The state visit is impossible even if pro-Beijing politicians and activists urge for it.

Dear Akie

I would counter your argument and say that China has been the one to allow a dispute to happen in the first place.

Japan is not using the Senkaku Islands, we don't have any buildings there, no Japanese lives there, we don't extract resources, USA gave Senkaku to Japan in the 80s. China should have talked to America, complain to them about that island. China never did.

India did not start the problems with China either, CCP was the one aggressive towards India. If China is smart you should realize you share a border with India, they have 1 billion people which you need for your economy to keep going, especially now when your fighting with America.

The problem is that China is the major destabilizing factor in the region.

Suga had better keep abe and his ilk on a leash if he wants to make his own policy with the PRC and ROK.

Re: Japan has chosen loudly and clearly make no mistake the US is its' ally. End of discussion.

Re: Please, striking capabilities at a key ally is not the way to go, perhaps striking capability at Beiijing is what you meant to say instead. Last I heard and read no other Asian neighbors aside China has been threatening Japan nor any of its other neighbors, so quit starting fires where there are none except those smoldering in China as they have proven yet again many times over the years.

Absolutely so, stable China-Japan relationship is key to the region's peace. This is laudable and most encouraging. When neighbors are cordial, they promote security and stability. Go for it..

Suga should impose sanctions on Communist China, not kiss Xi's rear...

5 ( +8 / -3 )

why waste time to talk to a dictator?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

so they'll let all those "re-education" camps slide then

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Disengage from the CCP they continuously threaten every one in the region and behave with little regard for others.

They will try to lull Japan into a false sense of security and then cause more strife.

Do not trust them or anything they say.

CCP need to be ousted from the world community and world trade until they can behave accordingly.

Dear ReasonandWisdomNippon,

I would like to point out there is some mistakes on your argument.

China (PRC) and Taiwan (ROC) both objected USA for handing over the Senkaku Islands to Japan. Source: Senkaku Islands, Wikipedia.

India was the one who started the problem. It was the Indian troops that invaded Chinese territory. "China did not enter our territory, no post taken." Quote India's PM Narendra Modi. Source: hindustantimes and BBC.

Also, why would China want to clash with India when they have so much direct investments there? China investments in India up 12 times from USD381 million in 2016 to USD4.6 billion in 2019, source Indiatimes.

Excellent move Prime minister.

China is cornered now and desperately need Japan, even if just to keep Japan neutral, they will have to give in a lot on the table.

Dont worry about Taiwan, it matters a lot more to Japan than to anyone else if you look at the map. China understands this well

Actually that Wiki entry isn't correct. Taiwan was pushing for the Senkakus to be given to them for the fishing rights in 1971. China started their claim in 1972 officially for rights to natural resources but backed by the PLA Navy's need to secure open access to the Pacific by breaking the First Island Chain. China effectively usurped Taiwan's claim since they claim ownership of Taiwan. Chinese maps prior to 1969 show the Senkakus as Japanese territory. Meantime, as China fortified their claim, Taiwan reached a negotiated agreement with Japan for fishing rights and is no longer an active claimant.

Japanese economy is so bad now,I don't think Suga can afford to lose Chinese market

OssanAmerica, the maps you are talking about can't be used at the court as an evidence. You have to look at the history in its totality to make definitive conclusions.

Little knowledge and half truth are dangerous mix.

The PRC is desperate right now from bad world public opinion (Covid, South Seas, it inability to follow international rules ,etc.) and needs Japan for validation
