Japan better use this situation to make good connections within the Taliban government as China for sure will use this situation to gain power

Japan cannot be expected to do that. It takes hundreds of millions of dollars in investments to be able to seize resources, let alone in Afghanistan. Would you put your nest eggs In Afghanistan?

Nobody in the world can lend, build and buy at the same time, China is the only one who can do it all the way, one stop shop. They lend Afghanistan the money, they build for Afghanistan and they buy from Afghanistan.

Maybe Suga can set his “go to” travel campaign towards Afghanistan. That will help set up good relations with the Taliban.

Japan can play a great intermediary role in this chaotic situation. A bit of calm to the storm. Japan needs to be the bridge builder in the new region. I believe they can do it, once the plan is set.

Afghanistan Has More Than $1 Trillion of Natural Resources and China Wants a Piece of It

We all know they love a Toyota

I'm sure Japan can provide some Toyota land cruisers with rocket mounts on the back.

Immediately coming into my mind when Kabul fell to the hands of the Taliban was the late Dr. Tetsu Nakamura and the NGO, Peshawar-no-Kai, that he headed. What would become his decades-long efforts to help grassroots Afghanistan better its people's hygiene and standard of living?

I'm glad the Taliban hasn't forgotten his and the NGO's philanthropic endeavor and many an episode he left behind.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Japanese NGOs have been active in such areas as education, agriculture and health care in Afghanistan. Among them is the aid group Peshawar-kai, whom physician Tetsu Nakamura worked for before he was killed in December 2019 by armed men in the eastern province of Nangarhar. Nakamura was the 2003 recipient of the Philippines' Ramon Magsaysay Award, dubbed the Nobel Prize of Asia.

Japan needs friends so why not?

Taliban spokesman: "We think women should be put in their place and we don't trust technology".

Japanese minister: "Would you like a job?"

18 ( +21 / -3 )

Since the Taliban and the old men running the LDP have rather similar views of women's rights, it might be a good fit. In fact, I think the senior members of the LDP should move to Afghanistan to serve as consultants and leave Japan to the younger crowd.

Words are cheap. Let their actions show their true intent. Dont trust them unless they earn it.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

These are murderers. How can anyone trust them??

11 ( +12 / -1 )

The headline implies or sounds like they have had good relations already before. lol

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The Taliban are Pashtuns, they imposed Pashtun culture which has never been big on educating women. Western TV only shows the elite English speakers in Kabul. Not the sizable number, possibly a majority, that at least partially support the Taliban. Especially in the south. The population has doubled since last time they were in power, it will be interesting to see what the outcome will be. The US won't be going back after suffering a huge humiliation, that's for sure.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

In coming years I am sure Kabul will be mini Dubai

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

I am sure they do, parasites!

Good news for exports. Terrorists love a Toyota

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The Taliban should know that Japan’s foreign policy goes through Washingjing first and foremost.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

"We want Japan to take part in the reconstruction of Afghanistan."

We want your money.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Right beside the American club. What could go wrong?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Who is Taliban?

Terrorist group. Fanatical religious. Will say Yes to anything. Why?

They've seen what happened to ISIS. Similar group with similar ambitions, but they wanted to fight everyone and lost.

Helping the Taliban is throwing money out the window.

Any deal sign today, tomorrow or a year later can be nulled. Void. It's like signing a deal with a liar. We have experience with that already. Called S. Korea the agreement breaker.

Japan will be happy to do business with the thugs if there is a buck to be made

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I don’t think Japan should trust a jihadi terrorist nation. They will likely fool and attempt to burn Japan to the ground. We don’t need a war gear. They know Japan has us military and if you let one in it’s like a Trojans horse

2 ( +2 / -0 )

i would never go. The would shoot me for being a former us soldier.

I’m sure the yakuza would be interesting in buying AK-47 from them

The Taliban takeover of the country could once again turn Afghanistan into a terrorist safe haven, as the group is believed to maintain ties with al-Qaeda. Good luck

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I don’t think NATO would appreciate and approve Japan involvement and investment to the taliban unless they are outcasted

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Taliban takeover of the country could once again turn Afghanistan into a terrorist safe haven

That’s right @oxy, but what has this to do especially with Afghanistan? Nowadays almost every bigger Western country is in fact already an even safer haven for them and similar groups.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Taliban want to maintain good relations with Japan because Japan has never sent soldiers and never killed Taliban, Afghans there. Japanese NGOs has rather helped Afghan people there for a long time.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Wobot I totally agree with your post "I think it would be best to avoid getting involved with this lot China might try it, but they could well just get sucked into a war to stop Islamic influence in Xianjing (which I suspect the US calculated). TRUE Afghanistan Has More Than $1 Trillion of Natural Resources and China Wants a Piece of It. China greed will get them in a war just as the Russian and the US found out. First let me say this Osama Bin Laden said you can't "KILL A RELIGION" if you kill me thousand of others will follow in the name of Allah!! The US has been in Afghanistan for over 20 years and the Russians several. If anyone can recall in the late 80's there was a bombing in a theater in Russia and the Russian branded the bombers as terrorist which in fact they were Russian Muslims. They were being persecuted in Russia because they could not exercise their religious freedoms. The terrorist acts continued and Putin tied the terrorist to the Taliban over in Afghanistan this started the war because the Terrorist had the backing of the Taliban. Going forward today China is doing the exact same thing persecuting the Ulghers, Chinese Muslims. They are being rounded up put in jail raped and the women sterilized. The Chinese do not want the Muslim influence in China. Eventually China too will start seeing these terrorist acts by coxing up to the Taliban based on greed. The Taliban does not want technology, but China wants control of the biggest Lithium fields for electrical energy. What China does not know they too will get sucked into a war. Once the Chinese Muslim on the border of Afghanistan start the terrorist acts and get the backing of the Taliban China will see a need to stop it and in the name of Muslim brotherhood and Allah China too will find itself sucked into a war as the Russians and US found out. You can't kill a religion!!!

@Commanteer. LOL. I totally agree with you.

Good, good very good news.

I have told you that the afghans respect the japanese.

Taliban takeover of the country could once again turn Afghanistan into a terrorist safe haven

Why? Don't they love America for coming in, occupying their country, bombing their weddings and hospitals, and killing their friends and family with video game joysticks from across the planet, for 20 years?

I mean, most people would be thankful after that and make sure no terrorists amassed in their country, right?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Shaking in their boots, the US is.

@Commanteer. LOL. I totally agree with you.

I can agree to this. But the younger crowded is just as uneducated as the current LDP.

Oxycodin

Well the Taliban beat the progressive folks, so maybe there's some truth to them.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Just to balance the scales of outrage here a smidgeon, a little (unexpected) sanity from the UK...

"UK Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said the Taliban were co-operating and marshalling people into queues at Hamid Karzai International Airport, making the process faster for those hoping to leave."

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-58299804

And (amazingly), from the U.S....

"Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby said that the Taliban appeared to be cooperating to allow Afghan nationals who have registered for US special immigrant visas to get to the airport gate."

https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/us-has-airlifted-7-000-people-from-afghanistan-pentagon-2514352

Albeit America never will, perhaps twenty years of invasive horror has allowed the Taliban to learn a bit more Humanity, a bit less rabid 'belief' in its own 'correctness'. And every unkind act which slanted 'news' can find to blame on the 'Taliban' in Afghanistan can be found daily in America's own version(s) of the Taliban here in the U.S. but goes unreported for its ennui producing repetitiveness...

Farmboy

Yeah sure, what's with 7000 americans still in Afghanistan.

Either ways, it's good for Japan to maintain their oil supply. Resources come before ideology.

Annoy the Taliban with something as beautiful as this:

What of their own ?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

There Turban-ed animals are starting to understand that the country is left with nothing but uneducated war mongers, unable to run a country and feed its population. Would not trust a word they say. However I can understand why they would trust Japan over most countries as most other will have their own interests and muslim populations to keep under control

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Bring some Taliban to Japan for some high-level talks-they would enjoy going to a traditional Japanese izakaya and having a couple of beers or maybe they wouldn’t…

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Japan should send an all female group to the negotiations. Let's see how far that goes and if any of them return alive.

Taliban take over of Afghanistan is the same as a military coup in Myanmar. They deserve exactly the same treatment by the world until their are open elections in Afghanistan.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Taliban want to maintain good relations with Japanese money.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It seems to me Japan has good relations with Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and other middle east countries besides Afghanistan because Japan will not send troops all over there but NGOs only go there.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I'm sure tourism from there will full steam ahead in a couple of years.

I'm pretty sure you meant that sarcastically, but honestly, I think you will see tourism in Afghanistan explode in the coming months. Now that the war is over, who is afraid of being kidnapped? Perhaps its too early to tell how the Taliban will treat tourists, but early indications suggest that they will welcome them just as any other developing country does.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Japan should send an all female group to the negotiations. Let's see how far that goes and if any of them return alive.

If Japanese women went to negotiate with the Taliban they would return with the Taliban’s bank cards and put the Taliban on a ¥30,000/month allowance. Then they would spend all the Taliban’s opium cash on cafe lunches and ¥1,000 a cup designer tea.

I'm also glad that Okinawa Prefecture, under the administration of Gov. Keiichi Inamine, conferred Okinawa Peace Prize in 2002 on Nakamura and the said NGO.

I'm wondering here what the U.S.-led war against the Taliban and the ensuing occupation of the country have accomplished except chaos.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Japan should bring anime and manga to the Taliban, they will like it.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

And of course you BELIEVE this, huh ?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So why did the Talibans kill Nakamura, then? D'uh, silly them.

There are all kinds of Talibans there, not all same. Talibans are not well organized. Some are really good and some are really bad insurgents. Dr. Nakamura was just unlucky there despite good Afghan guards around him. Guards were also killed.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Not at the same time, taliban change, like everything else.

Yukijin writes: "We all know they love a Toyota"

Yeagh, especially the deluxe model with mounted machine gun.

No civilized nation should have anything to do with this dystopian Afghanistan administration.

Otherwise Taliban will interpret it as approving their savagery against their own people.

When will the world wake up-there is no God. Get over it. Love 'life' and protect the vulnerable living instead of notions of a better afterlife.

Afghanistan is more sinned against than sinning. In less than half a century Afghanistan was invaded by two major powers: The Soviet Union under Brezhnev and The U.S. under George W. Bush. Nearly all the military accoutrements of Hell were levied on the people of this nation. If that nation is insane it was made so.
